Maybeboard

This deck is all about cloning or stealing your opponents' best stuff and using it against them. Flicker effects amplify this strategy by allowing your clones to disappear and return as an even better item, and the deck also has some minor flicker combos that can win the game on their own.

Commander selection depends on the power level. Though the deck is not optimized for her, Aminatou, the Fateshifter is the most powerful option, being a combo piece in her own right. Merieke Ri Berit is the default option, being fairly high powered but a little obnoxious. Chromium, the Mutable or Halfdane can stand in at casual tables, as they provide the right color identity while being vaguely related to the theme.

This deck was the most interesting and fun of my "adaptive cycle" of decks and, unlike the others, did not get hated out off the table! The combos are complicated and inefficient, and you're not stealing stuff your opponents were hoping to play the way Etali does--even though stealing or cloning stuff they had to pay for is considerably more effective! The deck simply scales to the threat level of the table and provides a different experience every time.

(The deck is currently in "nice" mode, with instant-speed stealing effects in the maybeboard. If you want to make this deck a little more ruthless, swap those in, probably for the "Clone Tokens" module.)

Updates Add

I am surprised to see I last played this deck over a year ago! It was probably my favorite deck from 2020, but I guess 2021 has been the year of the Commander Cube. When we've played constructed, I've been exploring tribal decks.

With the year coming to a close, I'm looking toward 2022 thinking I want to narrow my focus on tribal decks and revisit old favorites like this one. With that in mind, I am making a number of updates. While there are a couple new cards from the past year I wanted to get in here, the changes are mostly about replacing cards I'd moved to other decks/sets. The biggest change was to remove "meta hate" and random planeswalkers from the deck in favor of a new module of cards that create clone tokens. These cards don't synergize with the flicker effects as well (if at all), and I might miss having ways to deal with tokens, as cloning a 1/1 when there are a hundred of them on the battlefield is not that effective. However, the new cards are more on-theme, and I look forward to seeing how it goes.

The other big change is adding in Chromium, the Mutable as a "mid-power" commander, so the deck can remain playable in my group, which has a rule that we use only mid-power commanders. I suppose nobody would mind if I continued busting out Halfdane (now labeled "suboptimal"), but it's nice to have another option.
