Saturday Night COVID Commander —June 27, 2020

This game was the total opposite of last week's session, swapping a bunch of aggressive red-based decks for a table of blue-based decks! It was nice to see Jeremy playing Daxos, a commander I'd considered for my current run of "steal you stuff" decks. Ryan brought out his Oona deck again, which I realized too late was a bit of a cheat. I nearly laughed when I saw Ted's deck: good old Phelddagrif, the very first deck I tried building when I was looking into EDH earlier this year!

All these were going against my Halfdane deck, which tries to stay in the game by cloning or stealing the best stuff on the battlefield and eventually winning with some janky ETB combo. The slow pace of this game gave me plenty of time to see a good portion of my deck, and I had one half of a couple combos pretty early on. Jeremy was putting down some serious threats, but I didn't mind because I knew I could get a piece of the action myself.

I started getting worried when Ryan got 18 faeries into play all at once. It pretty much looked like the game would end in the next turn or two, and that's when I remembered playing against this deck in the session when we agreed to try cEDH decks. Fortunately, Ted had an answer that wiped most of the board, which I recovered from pretty well.

Ryan needed another couple board wipes--one from Jeremy and one from me in the form of -1/-1 to all his faeries--to keep him in check. At this point, I was nearing just 10 life, while Jeremy had built himself back up to 40+ and had a Dream Trawler out. I watched as the other half of one of my combos got exiled by Oona, but I hoped to draw into another one. Although I didn't have the rest of its combo, I dropped Altar of the Brood and started milling everyone for several cards per turn. This wasn't enough to be threatening, but people got worried nonetheless.

Ironically, Ted suddenly became the main threat, as he started wheeling us multiple times with Jace's Archivist. I'm not sure how he would have done it, but apparently he could have kept milling us, but his win condition--Laboratory Maniac--was in the graveyard. Unable to retrieve it, he passed the turn to me. Through all the wheeling, I'd been lucky enough to end up with some pretty juicy cards. First, I tried to get Teferi onto the battlefield, but that got countered--which was fine, because I kind of wanted to draw the counterspells out. I then got the Deadeye Navigator into play, bonding it with the Peregrine Drake for infinite mana. Using that I could flicker Charming Prince for infinite life, though I guess that was ultimately unnecessary. I then flickered Clever Impersonator to copy Ryan's Oona, with which I could mill everyone out of the game. If someone had interfered, I still had Blatant Thievery, with which I could have stolen others key permanents. If that didn't work, I could have flickered Fblthp to draw the rest of my deck (which would have made my fake Dream Trawler a 22/5). (I'm also pretty sure Ted still had Venser in play, so I could have flickered the Clever Impersonator to bounce everyone's permanents. I then could have passed the turn with infinite life and won through combat damage eventually. Whew!
