Friday Night COVID Commander —Aug. 29, 2020

I figured I'd test my sense that Halfdane is my favorite EDH deck thus far by playing it on the same game night as my most recent (and popular) build: Kynaios and Tiro. Fortunately for Halfdane, K&T did pretty much nothing in its game, which was boring for me but probably 100% fine with my opponents.

In Halfdane's game, I had all my colors in my opening hand along with a Deadeye Navigator, so things were immediately looking better. I also had an early creature to play, and Halfdane itself is easier to play than K&T, so within the first few turns I actually had stuff on the battlefield. Primordial Mist came out next, which is strong on its own but also synergized well with the Eldrazi Displacer. Win or lose, things were already far more interesting than K&T's session.

As the game progressed, things got even more interesting. Primordial Mist consistently added to my board presence and eventually got me Mirrormade, which I used to duplicate Primordial Mist itself. There was always something to do or consider, and once I manifested Brago, I felt like I actually had a shot at winning! Both Jeremy and Ryan had menacing board presences, but Brago could combine with Reality Acid to take out the most serious threat on my turn.

Unfortunately, Ryan pulled off an out-of-nowhere combo right before I got rid of his Omniscience, drawing his whole deck and winning off Laboratory Maniac. Even though I lost with this deck, it was still a far more interesting match. Halfdane for the win!
