Sasaya, Mother of Mana

Commander / EDH Budget Mono-Green

Maybeboard

Want to play an extreme game? Try out this deck. It is really combinative, which is a surprise in Mono-Green and can conquer the whole battlefield within a single turn.

Basics: The first 4-5 turns are about gathering 7 lands in hand. There are tons of cards supporting this purpose, creatures, instants, sorcery: Civic Wayfinder, Traverse the Ulvenwald, Cultivate etc. There is only one rule which you should keep in my: timing. To gain time it is very advisable to gather the 6th-7th land card in hand at the end of the opponent turn. Wild-Field Scarecrow, Yavimaya Elder, Expedition Map, Renegade Map, Journeyer's Kite is awesome for this. It is also recommended to have 5-6 mana on the battlefield before you cast your commander, because your possibilities will be wider and you will be more flexible if you have more mana. One final advice for the basics - cast your commander only when you can immediately transform it to Enchantment state.

When the transformation happened: Your mana will be growing cumulatively from turn to turn, so once you have 36 mana, in the next turn you will have 49, then 64 and so on. In order to transform the commander to Enchantment this deck requires tons of land cards (45), however after the transformation they slow down the deck. To bridge this disadvantage the deck has numerous card drawing and search option. Magus of the Library, Lifecrafter's Bestiary, Seer's Sundial, Tower of Fortunes, Citanul Flute, Chord of Calling, Geier Reach Sanitarium, Primal Command, Green Sun's Zenith, Abundance, etc. Keep in mind: 1 card from the list below can win the game for you, so choose wisely what will you search from your deck and use up every possibility when you can draw cards. Supporting this search as many Forest from your deck as you can. (Less Forest in deck more chance to draw useful cards)

Cards which can win the game for you:

  • Polukranos, World Eater: Can eat up creatures from every opponent and defeat an opponent with a single attack.
  • Mistcutter Hydra: Can defeat an opponent with a single attack in the same turn as it was cast.
  • Nylea, God of the Hunt: Can boost up creatures to the stars and provide trample for them.
  • Kamahl, Fist of Krosa: Can boost up creatures to the stars and provide trample for them. Do not forget to leave lands standing when you cast him to use his ability immediately.
  • Lifeblood Hydra: Can double your life and draw up your entire deck.
  • Genesis Hydra: Can summon any creature from you deck and defeat an opponent with a single attack.
  • Hydra Broodmaster: Can create that many hydras to defeat the entire table in next turn.
  • Soul of Zendikar: Can create that many beasts to defeat the entire table in next turn. Additionally it has reach. (This is why I applied this instead of [Ant Queen])
  • Genesis Wave: Ultimate card. Can summon every permanents from your deck within a single turn.
  • Animist's Awakening: Can put every lands in front on you in untapped position. This means hundreds of extra mana in the same turn when it was played.

Additional advice:

  • This deck works with lot of instants and sorcery and probably there will be turns when you have to discard cards (because there are more then 7 in hand at the end of the turn). Use them up again! Regrowth, Skullwinder, Eternal Witness, Praetor's Counsel.

  • Since this deck uses 45 lands it can happen after the Enchantment transformation that you draw lands only for turns. In this sad situation what you can do is defending yourself. Mystifying Maze is good, and you will have enough mana to remove the most dangerous creature from the combat. What is better is Constant Mists since you can surely put down lands from your hand in every turn. But what is the ultimate card in the deck for this aim is Glacial Chasm. You can gain extra turns while your opponents can not hit you and run them down together when you gathered all necessary cards. Supporting this card there are some land finders in the deck: Expedition Map, Ulvenwald Hydra

Summary: It is a very effective and fast deck which offers you lots of entertaining experience. It is really cool to have hundreds of mana in turn 8-9 and put incredible creatures to the battlefield. However this deck always will need a little luck, due to the number of land cards in it. However it really does not matter to lose few games by misfortune if you can win couple of other games by using the power of Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant   or as I call her, Mother of Mana.
