Most Banworthy Cards in Casual Commander

Unformat Casual Multiplayer Primer Stax

Maluko

In casual and social games of Commander, the game experience is more valuable than who ends up winning the game. However, different players have different thresholds over what they consider as a fun and interactive game. When players who barely know one another join for a game of Commander, this often leads to conflict, and what should have been a fun experience ends up driving players away from a casual playgroup, a local game store, or even the format.

Based on this, I talked with some friends to create a list of the potentially most unfun cards of the Commander format. This is a list of cards that players often complain about in several different places (the Internet included) as creating undesirable game states whenever they show up. This is a list of cards that you shouldn't add to your deck if you plan on playing a casual game of Commander, a game worth of remembrance and storytelling. Also, note the the word "potentially" at the beginning of the paragraph; many of the cards on this list can be used in a responsible way, but 95% of the times, they are not. Nobody will remember that game where you cast a turn 10 Sol Ring, but I'm sure a lot of people will remember that turn 1 Sol Ring that led do a turn 2 Commander that led to a turn 3 21 commander damage gg.

This list comprises the most common and powerful cards that promote plays/strategies traditionally disliked by players who are looking to play spells, interact with each other and have a good time, such as: Cards that produce too much mana too easily or quickly; Cheap and efficient tutors; Common combo pieces; Asymmetrical resource control; Resource denial; Cards that commonly create undesirable game states.

Comments and suggestions are welcome about the list :) Just keep in mind these three things when commenting:

  1. Yes, I am entirely aware this list is very subjective. It is, after all, based on mine and my friends' experience on the subject. You are free to disagree with some of the choices, but if you do, please explain why. I promise I will consider your argument for either adding or removing a specific card from the list.
  2. At first, I wanted to create a list of 100 cards, but me and my friends arrived a point where we believe we were adding cards just because. So I decided to leave the list at 92 cards... for now.
  3. Remember this list is designed only with casual and social games in mind. I have nothing against players who enjoy playing competitively. But if you're the kind of player who values the game experience more than you value winning, then this list is for you.
