Djeru, with Eyes Open Planeswalker EDH

Concept

I love planeswalkers for being value generating threats that require opponents to deal with them, shifting the dynamic of the boardstate. However, I don't like planeswalkers that are creature-centric. This led to me building a 5c superfriends deck that didn't feature many of the Ajani's, Gideons, and Elspeths. Djeru gives me a sleeve up all those walkers.

How It Plays

True to the normal superfriends list, boardwipes keep opponents off-balance while you establish a strong position of walkers protected by tokens. Unlike traditional lists, Djeru's vigilance allows you to use some of the combat trick abilities of your walkers, like Elspeth, Knight-Errant's +3/+3 and flying, to deal damage while maintaining defense. The additional damage reduction makes swarming Djeru a daunting task. The tutor-on-a-stick effect allows you to grab Ugin and Karn when you need to close out the game.

Card Selection

Walkers

  • Ajani Steadfast gives Djeru a minor buff of +1/+1, First Strike, and Lifelink. A low-impact but versatile piece
  • Ajani, Caller of the Pride more Voltron centric with Djeru, this has the option of slowly rolling him up or giving him evasion and double-striking which easily kills unsuspecting players.
  • Elspeth, Sun's Champion is probably the best mono-white EDH walker. Waves of creatures or conditional boardwipe. Its unfortunate that she kills Djeru, but it can allow you to tutor up something else in the same turn.
  • Elspeth, Knight-Errant can give Djeru +3/+3 and flying on a roll-up of one, which actually makes this an early tutor option for an aggressive start. That's a 3 turn clock from a flying creature that they must deal with while she rolls up towards her indestructibility emblem.
  • Gideon of the Trials he's only in here because of his silly emblem.
  • Gideon, Ally of Zendikar gives the token aspects of the deck a lot of options.
  • Gideon Jura is always a passable removal source.
  • Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is another great source of control, often coming down and erasing unfavorable boards.
  • Karn Liberated is yet another optimal control source, dealing with difficult threats and generally ending the game with his ult. People usually opt to scoop and start a fresh game rather than one where you have their creatures and lands.

Token Fun

  • Anointed Procession allows your walkers to swarm opponents should you decide to go wide.
  • Cathars' Crusade can pump your army to enormous sizes, or just make Djeru more threatening angle of attack.
  • Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is a must-add.
  • Emeria Angel is a consistent stream of blockers that can turn an aggressive corner when an anthem comes down.
  • Skullclamp nombo's with anthem effects, but is great early game. Draw is tough to come by in white, so this is worth the risk.
  • Martial Coup is a great way to steal the game when you have a few anthems out.
  • Oath of Gideon creates some early blockers for your mid-range walkers.

Tech

Djeru has proven to be an efficient attacker, as opponents often factor in his tutor ability as a downside to lethally blocking him.
