Jori En's Spell-Pingers

Commander / EDH UR (Izzet)

Stapler12

PEW PEW! This is a spellslinger deck that is all about casting a bunch of cantrips to mow down your opponents lifetotal with spell-based pingers. Standard all-stars Guttersnipe and Electrostatic Field and their handful of acquaintances are all here to deal big chunks of damage by casting Ponder s and Peek s that become equivalent to a Lightning Bolt to your opponent's collective dome. Jori En, Ruin Diver of course works great with all these cantrips, letting us draw extra cards not only on our turn, but on our opponent's as well via cheap draw instants like Whispers of the Muse and Quicken . And while we're drawing cards, lets draw even more cards and deal even more damage with Niv-Mizzet, Parun , and The Locust God too, who can make an army of tokens along with Young Pyromancer and Murmuring Mystic with Haze of Rage as a big finisher.

Just a couple notes on some of the cards we play:

  • As you can tell by the name, the most important cards in the deck are the "spell-pingers": Electrostatic Field , Firebrand Archer , Thermo-Alchemist , and Guttersnipe . These are the cards we're trying to kill our opponents with and its important we set them up and protect them so they are able to accomplish this, and with all the cantrips and card draw we can find them fairly reliably. That's still not consistent of course, so in addition to that there's Niv-Mizzet, Parun , Sphinx-Bone Wand , and Sentinel Tower as strong, though limited sources of spell-fueled damage, and the token makers, Young Pyromancer , Murmuring Mystic , Talrand, Sky Summoner , and The Locust God , as ways to get there through combat. These are the only ways the deck can effectively win, so be careful you don't end up drawing too many cards and decking because too many of your wincons ended up discarded.

  • Possibility Storm is an all-star in this deck for a number of reason. First off is its synergy with Jori En, letting any spell we cast automatically trigger her, meaning its entirely feasible to cast a spell on our turn, and then a cheap instant on each of our opponent's turns, drawing 4 extra cards in total. The real power of course is with the various spellsplinger effects in the deck, doubling down on the triggers and creating crazy chains of value and damage. Not inconsequential, however, is the effect it has on our opponents - for the most part the cards in our deck do effectively the same things (artifacts make mana, creatures do stuff with spells, enchantments generate value, instants/sorceries are cantrips) whereas our opponents decks are most likely not constructed the same way, so the cards they were holding to disrupt us might not do that anymore.

  • Leyline of Anticipation , in addition to being excellent with some of our more expensive, fragile and combo-ish cards like Niz-Mizzet, Thousand-Year Storm and Sphinx-Bone Wand to get them into play and untap with them for big plays, once again works nicely with Jori En, letting us double spell on everyone's turn for extra cards.

  • Stitch in Time is my time walk of choice because it's cheap which is great for Jori and doesn't easily enable chaining together multiple turns, which while obviously powerful, doesn't tend to lead to very fun or interactive games of magic for my opponents. This deck can very easily copy and recur any spell multiple times, so even time walk effects that exile like Temporal Mastery aren't necessarily exempt from abuse. Even if I'm casting 5 copies of Stitch off Thousand-Year Storm , there's still a possibility I whiff on all the coin flips, creating a bit of fun tension in a situation that would normally be an instant-scoop for most players.
