Sanctimony

Enchantment

Whenever an opponent taps a Mountain for mana, you may gain 1 life.

FormOverFunction on Bureaucracy!

Yeah, MagicMarc, I’m afraid rule of law’s form just won’t be able to outweigh its function in this circumstance. It was an auto-include before I even had a commander selected... but it will have to go. The times I’ve held off on justice have been when it’s only going to hit 1/3 of my opponents, and one of those times I should have cast it because he won two turns later. Recently since New Cappena, it seems like 2/3s of the decks have red in them now anyways so I’ll see how Justice goes for the next few weeks. Gaining life for each mountain with Sanctimony isn’t nearly as big a deal, since (again - post new cappena) the number of basics in play is wildly low. Where is Primal Order when you need it? ;p

I’ve played a number of games now and the deck is a lot of fun! This is the first deck (basically) of mine that has counter-magic in it, so I’ve had to reassess my playing habits, but otherwise it’s loaded with weird interactions that sort of pilot themselves. The commander is really important to get out there, as it will build you a 2/2 Army pretty promptly, and you need to draw a lot in order to get a good amount of theme on the table. Confessor matches up nicely with the draw/discard effects, and your first clue on your turn will get you two cards each turn. The color-hate (like Justice and Sanctimony) can be sort of feels-bad so a few of the games I’ve just sat on them (only justice, come to think of it). Library of Leng and Ivory Tower are always a great team, and Island Sanctuary is buttressed well by drawing on other people’s turns. The downside I hadn’t considered with that, though, is you’re still pretty weak to flying. I managed to use Abbey Matron in the best (only?) way, blocking and then pumping, which sort of felt like unlocking an achievement. Restore the Peace is great both against tokens that are beating you up AND against big baddies that block your 2/2s. Martial Law is one of the best answers to fliers and other trouble, almost like an Oblivion Ring that you can re-target every turn. This post is getting pretty long, so I’m going to wrap it up... but I think you get the notion ;p Thanks for asking MagicMarc!!

Love the list, think it looks good especially considering that people aren't packing artifact hate like they used to. The only changes I would make on a quick look would be to diversify your graveyard hate by changing one Tormod's Crypt into a Grafdigger's Cage. Just to attack on multiple angles. Also depending what you're concerned with for your red match-up, Dragon's Claw is potentially better than Sanctimony as burn plays a lot of non- Mountains. Sanctimony is much better in the prowess matchup though, so I'mm less confident about that change.

Other than that looks pretty much like what you'd want to see so no complaints here. Hope my tiny bit of input helps a little, even if it might be wrong :P

Looks pretty good! How's it been playing?

Overall, there are few spells I see as less important - Grapple with the Past, Noxious Revival, and Elvish Reclaimer - I think Weathered Wayfarer and Gift of Estates would pull more weight.

I wonder if 1-2x Eladamri's Call might be a good swap for 1-2x Ayula, Queen Among Bears . It would help dodge the Legendary Rule, while also tutoring up Knights, etc.

I like the inclusion of Blast Zone , and overall, I'm jealous that you managed to find room for 26 lands, which is 2 more than I can could fit in.

If you're facing burn, a sideboard with Riot Control , Pay No Heed , and/or Sanctimony might be worth considering. Nevermore might also be a powerful tool against many threats. It also occurs to me this sort of deck is maybe 50/50 against mill, putting so many cards into the graveyard and drawing/thinning like crazy. So Elixir of Immortality might be worth considering for the SB, too.

Cut this down to 60 total spells. You can move some of those cut cards into your sideboard.

Add at least 2 more lands, if not 4-6. The higher your AVG CMC, the more lands you'll need. Regarding lands, I know they're expensive - but the better the lands, the better the deck will run. If you're not already aware, All the lands in a sorted list is an amazing resource. A couple utility lands to consider: Ghost Quarter / Field of Ruin , Scavenger Grounds .

Mainboard suggestions: Generous Gift , Oran-Rief, the Vastwood , Harmonize

Swap out Druid of the Cowl for Elvish Mystic / Joraga Treespeaker . Fertile Ground / Utopia Sprawl would fit, too. Arbor Elf might be ok, but you'd have to mind your Forests. Like with land, the higher the AVG CMC, the more ramp you want. 12 ramp spells wouldn't be too many.

I'm not so sold on Goldenglow Moth, even though I am a fan. I think you'll get as much or more mileage out of good old fashioned Fog / Holy Day or even Order of the Stars . If it's lifegain you're after, Rest for the Weary . If you're trying to deal with flying creatures, then Deadly Recluse , or sideboard Plummet , or even Lingering Souls .

Sideboard Suggestions: Sundering Growth , Scavenging Ooze / Tormod's Crypt , Shalai, Voice of Plenty / Witchbane Orb / Leyline of Sanctity , Sanctimony , Pithing Needle , Elixir of Immortality

If you're going to run a slew of enchantments: Journey to Nowhere , Oblivion Ring , Nevermore , Ethereal Armor .

Brave the Elements should help you swing for lethal or just block the heck out of attackers.

If you're going to gain that much life, Chalice of Life  Flip would be another weapon for your arsenal.

Some added utility to your mana-base might add some range: Ghost Quarter , Scavenger Grounds , Sandstone Bridge , Sejiri Steppe .

Sideboard: Pithing Needle , Ratchet Bomb , Elixir of Immortality , Immortal Servitude , Sanctimony , Teyo, the Shieldmage , Witchbane Orb , Tormod's Crypt , Disenchant , Generous Gift , Revoke Existence , Silence
