Brion Stoutarm deck:

The Stoutarm

Commander / EDH jjmac112

SCORE: 2 | 7 COMMENTS | 1233 VIEWS | IN 1 FOLDER

So this is the deck as it was pre changes. First of all, I think you'll notice that I swapped 17 cards, not 15 lol. Secondly, you'll see that Osgir, the Reconstructor has taken Brion's job. After all the changes the deck has been through I found myself rarely casting Brion and the few time I've played with Osgir have been valuable experiences ;)

Cards out: Brion Stoutarm, Felidar Sovereign, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Serra Avatar, Iroas, God of Victory, Descend upon the Sinful, Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Magma Phoenix, Prison Term, Figure of Destiny, Student of Warfare, Prophetic Flamespeaker, Land Tax, Dawn of Hope, Lone Rider  Flip, Needle Spires

So with Brion out so too are the cards that combo with him the most like Serra Avatar and Magma Phoenix. With everything else I just needed to make space for stuff that I can squeeze a little (or a lot) more value out of. The one thing I am thinking should find its way back is Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. It's a powerful finisher and I'm now short on things that can take my board state and put an end to the game.

Cards in: Nahiri, the Lithomancer, Zirda, the Dawnwaker, Venerable Warsinger, Feldon of the Third Path, Battle Angels of Tyr, Dockside Extortionist, Deep Gnome Terramancer, Archivist of Oghma, Akiri, Line-Slinger, Wheel of Fortune, Faithless Looting, Teferi's Protection, Anointed Procession, Smuggler's Share, Expedition Map, Swiftfoot Boots, Darksteel Citadel

Also, I just realize I should add Rustvale Bridge and Treasure Vault

Of those, the ones that stand out to me are Screeching Phoenix, Ashcloud Phoenix, and Magma Phoenix. If you went Boros, there's surely a way to use Zirda, the Dawnwaker to go infinite. Or jeskai to include Training Grounds, etc

That being said, the rest don't seem exciting unless you have some other synergy going on with reanimating/returning creatures.

This a beautiful deck, great job. May I suggest Magma Phoenix as a recurrable board wipe that you can recurr even more easily than with its own ability?

I think a life-oriented phoenix is the best option, Garza's Assassin is the most similar, but I think red can flavorfully spend life like that, also if a Phoenix costs life to come back, I think it makes sense that it has other life-related abilities:

Bloodflame Phoenix

Creature - Phoenix

Flying, Lifelink

, Pay half your life, rounded up: Return Bloodflame Phoenix from your graveyard to the battlefield. Activate this ability only during your upkeep.

3/3

I'd like to see another Phoenix, but neither a phoenix lord or a repeated method of return.

Kogarashi on Magma Phoenix dies trigger with …

Please link cards with double square brackets so we can see the cards in question.

Magma Phoenix, Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts

If Magma Phoenix attacks and isn't blocked and deals combat damage to Teysa's controller, then her trigger goes on the stack. When that trigger resolves, the Phoenix is destroyed and a 1/1 Spirit token is created in its place. This triggers the Phoenix's ability, but the ability is not put on the stack until Tesya's trigger finishes resolving, meaning the Spirit token is on the battlefield when the Phoenix deals 3 damage to each creature and player. In this case, they will die.

It should be noted (just in case there's confusion) that the 3 damage done by Magma Phoenix when it dies is not combat damage, so that ability won't trigger Teysa.

Before I say anything else, take the Blunt the Assaults out of there. Fog-like effects are only necessary in decks based around it and Isochron Scepter. If you're in a position in which you need a spell like that, I'd recommend Arachnogenesis. I would suggest cutting the "one-ofs" for the sake of consistency, though I'm not too sure about your budget. Eternal Witness instead of Greenwarden of Marusa, though I like the warden, up to you. I'd take out Magma Phoenix and Purphoros, God of the Forge. Blasphemous Act kills all your shit, Savage Twister might work better in here. Signal the Clans or Worldly Tutor for getting stuff.

I can't emphasize this enough:Incinerate sucks compared to Lightning Bolt and Branching Bolt sucks compared to Clan Defiance.

Night Soil isn't necessary. If you want something to get rid of graveyards, go with Relic of Progenitus or Grafdigger's Cage. I wouldn't recommend having Primal Surge in here since you have 18 non-permanent spells, but if it works... I'd also advise more ramp; instead of stuff that enchants your lands to get more mana, get more lands. Stuff like Kadoma's Reach, Cultivate, Rampant Growth. Maybe Temple of the False God or Sol Ring (not Modern legal). Draw spells like Explore or Life's Legacy. Sorry for the disorganization, good luck and shit

I'm going to second making 2 mana ramp a priority. Sol Ring is a nice start, but you really should add 4-6 more sources of ramp. Even if you add a creature like Knight of the White Orchid who you can sac later. 2 damage isn't a lot but its something, especially if it comes with a land drop. Also have to echo Solemn Simulacrum.

Have you considered Magma Phoenix? That makes a decent Brion target since it can be brought back fairly easily from the graveyard and helps clear the board.

Just a few suggestions... Try running Lightning Bolt instead of Lightning Strike, as it is the same thing for a lower cost. Also, try Blazing Salvo in place of Shock. Lastly, try Collateral Damage for combos with Magma Phoenix.
