Worldheart Phoenix
Creature — Phoenix
Flying
You may cast Worldheart Phoenix from your graveyard by paying rather than paying its mana cost. If you do, it enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it.

Worldheart Phoenix Discussion

I think a life-oriented phoenix is the best option, Garza's Assassin is the most similar, but I think red can flavorfully spend life like that, also if a Phoenix costs life to come back, I think it makes sense that it has other life-related abilities:
Bloodflame Phoenix
Creature - Phoenix
Flying, Lifelink
, Pay half your life, rounded up: Return Bloodflame Phoenix from your graveyard to the battlefield. Activate this ability only during your upkeep.
3/3
I'd like to see another Phoenix, but neither a phoenix lord or a repeated method of return.
- Akoum Firebird - Landfall
- Arclight Phoenix - Storm
- Ashcloud Phoenix - Morph
- Bogardan Phoenix - Counter
- Chandra's Phoenix - Opponent dealt Damage from Instant/Sorcery or Chandra
- Everquill Phoenix - Mutate & Artifact Token
- Firestorm Phoenix - Delayed casting
- Firewing Phoenix - Mana cost
- Flamewake Phoenix - Ferocious
- Flame-Wreathed Phoenix - Tribute (very weak, why is this mythic?)
- Immortal Phoenix - No requirement
- Kuldotha Phoenix - Metalcraft
- Magma Phoenix - Mana cost
- Molten Firebird - Skip draw step
- Phoenix of Ash - Escape
- Rekindling Phoenix - Creature token
- Shard Phoenix - Mana cost with timeing restriction
- Shivan Phoenix - No requirement
- Skarrgan Firebird - Opponent dealt damage
- Skyfire Phoenix - Commander
- Spellpyre Phoenix - Cycling
- Warcry Phoenix - Battalion
- Worldheart Phoenix - cost

In the past my wife and I have built both Paragon of the Amesha (enchantment voltron) and Dragonsoul Knight (infect voltron) as pauper EDH lists.
The benefit that both of them have compared to Worldheart Phoenix is that you can just dump a bunch of ramp into the list and you have a built in mana sink win condition in your commander.
Any I'm pretty sure that my wife's Dragonsoul Knight list was played against a bunch of casual EDH lists and stomped on them (basically the same situation you're in).
As for good cards - I got a lot of value out of kicker cards. They do something by themselves but you can also get more value late game. Citanul Woodreaders and Dismantling Blow are both decent sources of card draw. You also have Blink of an Eye and Into the Roil for pseudo removal/draw. Agonizing Demise is decent creature removal.

Depending on your color/s these are what I would go with personally. My favorite choice is marchesa.
Wr- don't
3 color- Marchesa, the Black Rose
4 color- Saskia the Unyielding
5 color- Morophon, the Boundless
Interestingly morophon allows you to play another phoenix. Worldheart Phoenix

Suns_Champion Worldheart Phoenix stands up and raises its wing.
There are several tribes I'd like to see expanded, Skeletons foremost among them. Phoenixes do have some competition with Dragons as red's flying representatives, but they've gotten a lot of good exposure. It wouldn't surprise me to see a Legendary Phoenix soon, but it would probably be in a core set or supplementary/summer casual set.

I suggest Hadana's Climb Flip and Worldheart Phoenix. The flip land is just an amazing value and the phoenix is five colors as long as you are casting it from your yard, so it adds five counters to your commander and it's pretty janky :)

Contrast to the wording on Worldheart Phoenix which does say cast, despite having a very different cast cost (and effect) from the graveyard.

My Fusion Elemental deck eventually became a five color good-stuff deck. I originally went with the Alara cycle of three color commons that get a boost from having other multi colored creatures. Since I took those out I have the Worldheart Phoenix as my alternate. Being able to dodge the commander tax by casting it from my graveyard is disgusting.
There are a bunch of other great generals from Alara. The Lorescale Coatl can get pretty nasty, (g)(u) gives you both ramp and draw, even better the draw grows your general. The Scarland Thrinax is my favorite Jund PDH general. Sigil Captain is another fun one, getting value out of 1/1 creatures. Plus you have the nasty combo of Midnight Guard and Presence of Gond.
The one thing I have found as a issue in PDH is the lack of wraths, when someone's board state get's out of hand it can be very hard to stop them.
