I have replaced Angel of Despair with Alpha Deathclaw, which reduced the average converted mana cost of this deck from 3.84 to 3.82, and I was sad to make that replacement, since the angel is one of my favorite creatures in the game, but the deathclaw has a more lenient mana cost, higher power and toughness, and its ability can be used twice, so it was clearly a better choice for this deck.

Some thoughts:

  • I would be playing Ashen Rider instead of Angel of Despair, as the mana-costs are irrelevant (the games not going long enough to cast either) but exiling instead of destroying is much stronger (particularly as there's a bunch of indestructible cards and lands available).

  • Zirda, the Dawnwaker seems very weak/useless here, as for the cost of getting it into play you could have just triggered Necrotic Sliver anyway. Though Necrotic Sliver also feels very slow clumsy regardless of whether there's a cost reduction. Personally I'd be thinking just running 8 creatures, the Ashen Rider and Angel of Despair, would serve you better.

  • You need some proactive ways to pitch your high-mana creatures into the graveyard for reanimation. Bone Shards could be good for this purpose, running the full playset of Collective Brutality would also be helpful.

  • I'd suggest running a single Unburial Rites so that you can fetch up a reanimation effect in a pinch with Unmarked Grave.

My changes would be something like removing the 4x Necrotic Sliver, 2x Zirda, the Dawnwaker, 2x Inquisition of Kozilek, 2x Unmarked Grave, and 1x Footsteps of the Goryo, and in their place adding in 4x Ashen Rider, 1x Collective Brutality, 1x Persist, 1x Unburial Rites, and 4x Bone Shards

MTGBurgeoning on The Kaalia Battalia

Hello and thank you for your awesome suggestions!! Kaalia will always have a special place in my heart as she led my very first EDH deck. You never forget your first! I love the idea of including Isshin, Two Heavens as One here! Doubling-up Kaalia's trigger is awesome, but also doubling-up the triggers of Aurelia, the Warleader and Battle Angels of Tyr make this card's inclusion even better! As a bonus, this build has so many recursive abilities that having Isshin die is not a problem. GREAT RECOMMENDATION!

As for Conjurer's Closet and Panharmonicon, these inclusions would have been slam-dunks during previous iterations of this build. There was a time when this deck solely focused on enter the battlefield triggers. Over the years, this theme evolved into a more combat-driven engine (which is another way Isshin will make this deck stronger!). At this moment, less than 25% (six out of 27) of the creatures in this deck have enter the battlefield triggers, including the aforementioned Rune-Scarred Demon. I sense that adding Conjurer's Closet and Panharmonicon to the current iteration of this deck may make it a bit clunky, although thinking about the synergies with Rune-Scarred Demon, Bogardan Hellkite, Karmic Guide and Angel of Despair is quite tempting...

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about Kaalia! I appreciate your suggestions and feedback! Happy brewing!

AstroAA on Should I Put Talisman of …

If you want synergy with swamps Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is your answer. Sadly white does not have something similar with plains.

One thing I want to note is your CMC is pretty high at 4.05. As such, I wouldn't really go below 35~36 with at least 10~15 extra sources of mana/lands, such as what DrukenReaps mentioned with Land Tax and Sword of the Animist. I would personally try getting your CMC down to around three, and I think if you did you'd have a lot smoother of a game if you did so. You seem to be wanting to have a lifegain theme, so replacing more expensive cards like Angel of Despair with things like Soul Warden would help in that regard.

Hey, nice version on a low budget. You have good deck building skills on a budget.

Consider Talisman of Hierarchy as 99th card or an upgrade for a Diamond? Orzhov Signet is another mana rock upgrade for a Diamond. Commander's Sphere is upgrade for Cluestone. Angelic Accord is an Angel token source upgrade for Moonsilver.

Sigarda's Vanguard gives Liesa double strike when she ETB and when she attacks. Karmic Guide can reanimate any creature in your graveyard even a black creature. Emeria Shepherd is powerful repeatable nonland permanent reanimation when playing so many Plains. Pair Shepherd with Wayfarer's Bauble.

Liesa, Forgotten Archangel has lifelink, can shut down some opponent strategies and can be repeatable creature recursion. She's good enough to add some creatures who can sac themselves for value especially removal and protection such as Cathar Commando and Selfless Spirit.

Angel of Despair is powerful ETB removal. Angel of Sanctions exiles something when it ETB. Admonition Angel can be repeatable exile. Palace Jailer is more monarch as well as opponent creature exile. Vindicate and Dire Tactics are some budget removal upgrades to consider.

Caves of Koilos, Shineshadow Snarl, Shambling Vent, Temple of Silence, Vault of the Archangel are some budget land upgrades to consider.

Good luck with your deck.
