Commander / EDH Primer RW (Boros) Tokens

Maybeboard

For a long time, many Boros players have lamented their options in Commander. The last two years we've seen Firesong & Sunspeaker and Feather burst onto the scene. And while those are very good and fun commanders in their own right, they are not the classic "Boros Aggro" archetype adapted to our format. Winota is that deck.

Play this deck if you want to:

  • Want to go FAST

  • Swing with a lot of creatures

  • Like a bit of gambling

How does this deck win?

Combat is the name of the game here. Beat in the faces of those annoying Simic players with all their planning and ramp and try and take em out before they get to actually enacting their plans. Get between 1-3 tokens out and cast Winota, and don't stop until your opponents are dead. ABA is the motto. "Always Be Attacking"

Important pieces to look out for are:

Cathar's Crusade and Angrath's Marauders

These provide you a much needed power boost to get you over the top. Often you're just going wide with a lot of smaller stuff (power 1-4) until you hit one of these.

Odric, Master Tactician

Another way to get your army through with enough damage. Telling your opponents "No Blocks" when you attack with a pile of creatures is the kind of delight a white aggro player lives for. You will need to untap with him, so beware.

How does this deck lose?

  1. Repeated Boardwipes
  2. Winota getting countered 3+ times (even 2 is a stretch).

Alas, the twin enemies of all aggro players plague this deck too. If you get boardwiped a couple of times, you'll fall too far behind on card advantage to realistically catch up. And Winota is the value engine this deck is built on. Without her, you're still just the regular old "Boros Aggro player". For this reason, stock up on your boardwipe prevention options!

Possible Cuts:

Silverwing Squadron_

They only start producing more tokens the next turn. Attack triggers aren't very desirable in Winota. But beyond that it's a big vigilance/flier. This deck lacks in what I call "Game Ending Oomph". Silverwing Squadron can get big enough to become that game ending threat. Making it less of a priority to cut.

Chandra, Flamecaller

This Planeswalker has everything we want. Non-human creature tokens if we get her out on a board with a lone Winota. A wheel that gives us an extra card. And a (mini) boardwipe in an emergency. Still, it's a 6 mana planeswalker with a fairly low "floor". Still, I enjoy the card and I'll keep testing it out.

Possible inclusions:

The Sunforger package

I noticed I played a decently high amount of instants in this deck. And on my maybelist there are a few others I want to try out. Now I've never really likes Sunforger, I always found it's mana demands prohibitively expensive. But If/when I get my hands on a Teferi's Protection and Chance for Glory. It might be fun to try out. I'll also take another look at The Professor's video on Sunforger to add to the package.

Gogo, Bandit Warlord and Helm of the Host

Godo's additional combat step ability could be interesting if there was a lot more vigilance/untap shenanigans in the deck. Or more equipments. But let's be real, the reason you'd include it here is to get the Helm of the Host combo going, giving you infinite combat steps and attackers. But while you can cheat Godo out with Winota, and Helm on it's own could be funny with a few of the creatures. I think any of these options are too telegraphed and too easy to disrupt. Also, Helm is very mana intensive. So fun for the maybeboard, but I doubt it'll ever make it to the deck.

The rest of the maybeboard is fairly self explanatory I think. But feel free to ask questions in the comments. Suggestions are also welcome!
