Maybeboard

LAST UPDATE: 23/07/2025 - Bloomburrow

Being a player to the core, Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest particularly resonates with me. Throughout the years, I have tried several builds that never quite made the deck functional and fun. Ultimately, while browsing through older magic the gathering sets, I discovered a lot of extremely powerful/unfair cards that I just had to find a way to capitalize on. My playgroup all have a ''plague deck'' as they call it: A distruptive deck that aims at stalling or disrupting gameplay frequently rather than have a 100% focused wincon. This is my version of such a deck. Plesae note that this type of deck may not be suitable for all playgroups and a Rule 0 talk is definitely mandatory with such a build.Enjoy !
1- Stall the game with cards like Desolation or Static Orb

2- Cast Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest as a setup for sacrifice triggers

3- Repeatedly force opponents to sacrifice so many permanents that their side look like a barren landscape

1. Awakening Zone / Bitterblossom / From Beyond
Those cards are mainly in the deck for their recurring token generation options that can be used to pay costs of cards like Smokestack or Culling the Weak. Interesting to note that most of them create a scion token that can also sacrifice itself for mana thus boosting our board through Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest's ability and help us ramp in a low remaining land boardstate.

2. Archfiend of Depravity / Natural Affinity / Nature's Revolt / Massacre Wurm
Natural Affinity is a good instant response to a boardwipe when we are at a disadvantage to settle the board back and allow us to rebuild. It can also work, as Nature's Revolt, with Massacre Wurm to destroy all of our opponent's land. Similarly, if Nature's Revolt is on the field, Archfiend of Depravity force our opponents to sac A LOT of lands.

3. Basking Broodscale
Infinite Spawn token creation with Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest and thus infinite +1/+1 counters on all our creatures. With Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos or Butcher of Malakir in play that also means infinite sacrifice creature triggers to our opponents.
4. Contamination / Desolation / Ritual of Subdual / Mana Web
Mana-based stax cards that also, in the case of Contamination and Desolation, boosts our board.

5. Smokestack / Tangle Wire / Static Orb
Some key stax card in the deck. In case of Smokestack, always stack sacrifice trigger before adding counter trigger so your opponents always sacrifice more permanents.

6. Tainted AEther
Probably my favorite card of the whole deck. Particularly mean with Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos or Butcher of Malakir in play.

7. Dimir House Guard
Can transmute for key cards like Smokestack, Tainted AEther. Can also fetch Eternal Witness to recover a key piece from the graveyard.
Can also fetch Scapeshift that can help deliver a fatal blow to opponents. Can also fetch Koskun Falls for defense if required.

1. Mulligans Required: X,XX (XXX)
2. Turn first creature: X,XX (XXX)
3. Turn Strategy Online: X,XX (XXX)
4. Number of Tokens by T6: X,XX (XXX)
5. Turn of Land Miss: X,XX (XXX)
6. Turn Hand Emptied: X,XX (XXX)

1. OPENING HAND
Ideally 3 lands, including both colors, and a recurring token generator.
2. TUTORS
In order of priority to fetch: Recurring Token Generation, Strategic Enablers, Win Con.
