Warchief's Out

DatRamblingMan, 3 years ago

This past weekend testing this deck told me two things: 1.) This deck could use one more land, since it NEEDS to curve out and continue applying pressure to win. Being stuck on two lands not being able to deploy three drops cost me games that very easily could have been won. 2.) With that being said, Workshop Warchief felt out of place being a 5 drop in a deck so heavily focused on deploying as many early game threats as possible. Warchief is a good card, but this isn't the build for it. With that being said, the weekend's event led to these updates: -3 Workshop Warchief -4 Ascendant Packleader +1 Forest +2 Murderous Rider +4 Experiment One

SNC Update

PhocusEnergy, 3 years ago

Long time no update! I haven't been playing much MTG recently due to a busy personal schedule, but recently started back up EDH again and decided to get my decks back up to the current sets.

My playgroup re-sets our decks to the $100 price limit at every new Standard legal set release, so on top of new cards, it usually means saying goodbye to some old ones with inflating cost. However, against all the odds, for this update some much-needed recent reprints had actually drastically reduced the cost of this deck, and we were able to get in several great upgrades with a deck that clocks in at under $100!

Our first addition is a card that's been on our maybe list for a long time, and is finally getting the start. Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons is swapping in for Grismold, as the latter has underwhelmed me in action, and pinging down our opponent's early creatures while giving ourselves some deathtouch defenders should serve us better. Weathered Sentinels is our first new card, and my goodness does this seem like a perfect fit. A massive early dissuasion for any of our opponents to send a wayward creature in our direction, and if they decide to anyway, they can be absolutely pummeled on the next turn because of it. Giving us early access to Reach is also a nice plus. Shakedown Heavy should help us draw cards early while remaining a persistent blocker for us even with Thantis on the board, unless our opponent wants to continuously take 6 damage to the face from this menace-packing 3-drop. Jolene, the Plunder Queen is a perfect fit for our deck, both working as an incentive for our opponents to attack someone else, and giving us a nice bit of ramp on her own swings. If we happen to stall out at 4 mana when we cast her, one swing from her can give us what we need to get Thantis into play, so she also fits into our curve perfectly. Ziatora's Envoy is also a more-than-perfect fit for us, and might actually edge out Toski as our strongest 4-drop. If they manage to get an attack in, our worst-case scenario is we've hit our opponent with a 5/4 trampler and drawn a card. Enough said. Spring-Leaf Avenger is a 6/5 with ninjutsu for 3G helps us get them out and get a hit in easily and ahead-of-curve, and getting a permanent of our choice back from the graveyard on every hit is a fantastic value. Family's Favor is an interesting little addition, making one of our creatures indestructible during combat, and then either leaving them indestructible or letting us draw a card afterwards. Zariel, Archduke of Avernus is a little older than the previously-mentioned cards, but finally dropped to a price level we could afford on our budget. All of her abilities appear relevant to us, with her +1 helping give our attackers haste, her 0 providing us a blocker if we need it, and her ultimate giving us a consistent second combat phase being a game-ender. On top of the new additions, our reduced costs also allowed us to bring back in Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor and Lightning Greaves, which have both been extremely powerful cards in this list in the past.

Given that I haven't actually played much with the sets from MID to SNC, all of these new cards were taken from a run through of the scryfall pages for each of these sets, as well as a look at EDHREC's updates for Thantis. If anyone has any suggestions for some new (or old) cards I might have missed, make sure to leave them in a comment!

Not actually Grixis

I'm experimenting with Lord Xander, the Collector. I technically can hard cast him with Cavern but he's here to be a turn 3 drop with Sorin's ult. If I end up running more Xanders, I might try out Ob Nixilis, the Adversary as a way to close out a game but without the other 2 he's just a 2-4 damage ping or a free blocker. Xander is incredibly strong but my issue is he's dead in hand without Sorin.

Were I to drop Xander, replacements would be

Another land

drop a Thoughtseize and add 2 Inquisition of Kozilek

Another Olivia or Kalitas.

Drop 1 Blackcleave Cliffs for a Godless Shrinefoil and add in a single Edgar, Charmed Groom  Flip. A white splash would give me abundant new and powerful sideboard options.

not seeing a lot of Show and Tell in my meta. taking Agent of Treachery, Ashen Rider, and Ensnaring Bridge out for more blue hate, Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast. Alpine Moon should still cover stuff like Dark Depths, and Leyline of the Void covers reanimator.

Alpine Moon is THE card against Urza's Saga. it is crazy good against decks that rely on saga, as it blows it up immediately. no mana, no construct, no fetch. just a dead card.

What was I thinking…?

I just removed a mythic rare foiled planeswalker so I could replace it with an uncommon one drop. I must be out of my mind.

STREETS OF NEW CAPENNA

MattN7498, 3 years ago

More Triomes! Glad they finally finished the cycle in New Capenna. This set is a very flavorful set with a lot of new build arounds, including the Commander product. In terms of dragons, there isn’t a whole lot going on as we’re gearing up for another Dungeons and Dragons set this summer. Just will be doing some mana upgrades. If you haven’t checked out the leaks out there on the internet, there will be some very interesting stuff coming out that will be the new talk of dragon decks so be on the lookout for that!
(EXCLUSION) Ziatora, the Incinerator This dragon is more of build around card than an inclusion in this deck since we’re not really abusing a ton of sacrifice effects and enough recursion. I do think it’s worth talking about depending on your type of deck build if you’re more enter the battlefield focused and can easily recur dragons your sacrifice as it’s a strong ability. But not enough for me in my build. Nature's Lore > Chromatic Lantern 3 mana ramp, especially artifact ones, have kind of been getting worse as the years go on and Lantern has been on the chopping block for a while. With the fetches and lands that are now in the deck, correct colored mana has never really been an issue if you’re able to think about what you need to be fetching early. Plus with the addition of two new Forest triomes, a forest tutor on turn 2 to get any other combination of two other colors is really going to help. Jetmir's Garden > Dragonskull Summit Dragonskull has looked like the less useful non fetchable land out of the bunch, so it needed to be replaced to get the new Triome in. Even though it was technically a dragon themed land :( Ziatora's Proving Ground > Savage Lands Better upgrade that can be fetchable and cycled late game if we don’t need more land drops. Deathcap Glade > Undergrowth Stadium I’ve been more fan of these slow lands over the Battlebond style lands of needing multiple opponents as those situations come up more of hurting you when you have one opponent left vs needing it untapped in the first 3 turns.

Suggestions for upgrades

pryrates, 3 years ago

Meta in my commander playgroup(s) seems to shift more towards ramp cards with mana value 2, making my Lord Windgrace deck slightly slower in comparison. Lategame in the current state of the deck is still incredible if you amass triggers, but I think I need to work on board-building-speed and interactions a little bit more.

Adding Draw

DareiJuxis, 3 years ago

With new cards from Neon Dynasty and New Capenna I have finally upgraded the deck's much needed card draw. I also increased the number of Dragon's Approach and Dragons in general.

Slightly larger devotion to copying

ConsumingKiribo, 3 years ago

I've decided I've acquired enough cards that it wouldn't be hurting my wallet too much to go into a copy strategy. In addition, cards with mutate help with keeping the budget low as they serve a similar purpose. In addition, due to Sea-Dasher Octopus, Reliquary Tower would be a good addition given how large the hand could get.
