Warmonger Hellkite Discussion

Anax, Hardened in the Forge , Archetype of Aggression , Garruk's Packleader , Nylea's Forerunner , Quartzwood Crasher and Warmonger Hellkite might be some cards of interest. My Strength Incarnate deck might have some other useful cards, but those are the best I can think of.

first thx for the great suggestions guys. i was thinking of Warstorm Surge and Terror of the Peaks but i decided against it. getting triggers from all creatures is better. Ezuri's Predation i will try to get a copy, seems really good.

i already cutted Warmonger Hellkite and Dread . i think they are too expensive mana wise and dont do enough. maybe im replacing Trove of Temptation with Curse of Opulence .

Would you want to find space for Warmonger Hellkite because redundancy? You might consider it in place of Chandra's Ignition .

Also, instead of Crawlspace , what about Curse of Opulence ? For two less mana you can make it fun for your opponents to attack someone else! Not to mention the mana gen you'll get along the way. Rather than de-incentivize attacks your way, make it more alluring to swing elsewhere!

Okay, so I just thunk a thought. What if you force combats every turn, in order to get your creatures through without them being blocked, and then you just find ways to tap down your stuff that you don't want swinging? Turn the game into a super-aggro melee in the early game, so everyone is forced to swing with (and possibly lose) their set-up creatures. That's what red should be doing to win - make everyone else react and fight on your terms.

So, cards that can force combats: Angel's Trumpet, Avatar of Slaughter (Mogis approved), Bloodthirsty Blade, Curse of the Nightly Hunt, Disrupt Decorum, Geode Rager, Goblin Diplomats, Goblin Spymaster, Grand Melee, The Akroan War, Trove of Temptation, Warmonger Hellkite, and of course, War's Toll.

I had a deck similar to this with Gahiji, Honored One. Some pieces from that deck that will help with your strategy include Bloodthirsty Blade, Assault Suit, Avatar of Slaughter, and Warmonger Hellkite.

I would throw in some more attack taxes like Norn's Annex and Sphere of Safety

Here’s some decent pieces to both help with the war theme and make life difficult for your enemies.

Fumiko the Lowblood because samurai

Warmonger Hellkite makes creatures attack and can be pumped

Incite RebellionandDisrupt Decorum both have that sort of subterfuge, disrupt enemy lines feel to me.

Grand Melee because open war

Goblin Diplomats because diplomacy is needed in every war

Prowler's Helm like a spy slipping through their defenses.

Outpost Siege card advantage and siege is referenced.

Blackblade Reforged and Strata Scythe can both make varchild big after a bit of development. More survivors

Grenzo, Havoc Razor

Paragon of Fierce Defiance

Godo, Bandit Warlord and while you’re at it you could add Helm of the Host as an easy win

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell

Bloodsworn Steward

Archetype of Aggression

Dockside Extortionist because there is always people like that in war

Neheb, the Eternal is likely worth a spot.

Oni of Wild Places may not necessarily fit the theme but repeatedly bouncing varchild has its advantages

Signal Pest

Iron Myr for mana

Legion Warboss

Angrath's Marauders

Downhill Charge seems pretty good.

Fatal Frenzy and Mercadia's Downfall feel decent too.

Seize the Day is very war themed to me.

By Force implies hostilities

Burn at the Stake might be a big kill card after you’ve taken a bunch of survivors. 3 times the amount you tap gets huge quick.

World at War

Mizzium Mortars

Crawlspace so you can bottleneck their armies like Sparta did against the Persians lol.

Voyager Staff to remove varchild maybe?

That’s what stood out most to me with a quick glance through EDHRec. I’ll keep brainstorming for ya though!

I'm not big on singular fatties, preferring cards like Rampaging Baloths that make a sizable crowd sporting dad bod. Still, if you're having trouble with Wraths, evasion, and counters, you have plenty of options:

For Wraths: Heroic Intervention (so $, but so good!) and Wrap in Vigor (less $, but does get around anti protection tech like Shadowspear, but if your meta sees more Wraths with the "cannot regenerate" clause, not so good)

For Counters: Veil of Summer (only going to get more expensive, invest now!), Leyline of Lifeforce, or Prowling Serpopard would be well-suited to this deck.

For Evasion: Gruul War Chant, Goblin War Drums, Pyreheart Wolf, Bellowing Tanglewurm, Angel's Trumpet, Fumiko the Lowblood, Avatar of Slaughter, Warmonger Hellkite, Grand Melee, and Trove of Temptation are all options.
