Alright so I wanted to make Phage my commander because it just makes no sense but can be incredibly fun to pull off. Now if you don't see it yet, you are probably thinking "Wait, you can't have Phage as your commander. If you ever try to cast her, you will lose the game. That's so dumb." Normally, you would be right, however I have taken this into account and have ways to work around losing the game if I cast Phage from the command zone. Let's break it down.

Ways to not lose the game when I cast Phage not from my hand:

  1. [ Torpor Orb ] this is a rather self-explanatory one. Entering the battlefield doesn't cause abilities to trigger. Phage enters the battlefield, doesn't trigger the ability that makes me lose the game.

  2. [ Platinum Angel ] Another rather self-explanatory one. If you have Platinum Angel out, no losing the game. Phage comes out and gets to stay.

  3. [ Giving your opponent Abyssal Persecutor ] Using something such as Avarice Totem or Gauntlets of Chaos makes it so that your opponent can lose the game, but you cannot. Therefore once again, Phage gets to stay.

  4. [ Sundial of the Infinite ] So Phage hits the battlefield, you immediately end the turn with Sundial of the Infinite exiling Phage's ability on the stack. You get to keep Phage and not lose.

Let's Mana Ramp!:

  1. Cabal Coffers

  2. Caged Sun

  3. Crypt Ghast

  4. Gauntlet of Power

  5. Magus of the Coffers

  6. Nirkana Revenant

  7. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

  8. Sol Ring

Tutors so I can actually get Phage out:

  1. Beseech the Queen

  2. Demonic Tutor

  3. Diabolic Tutor

  4. Sidisi, Undead Vizier

  5. Vampiric Tutor

  6. Demonic Collusion

  7. Increasing Ambition

  8. Rune-Scarred Demon

  9. Liliana Vess

  10. Dark Petition

Getting Phage damage through in order to win the game! (Includes both making Phage unblockable as well as things that give Phage haste):

  1. Lightning Greaves

  2. Swiftfoot Boots

  3. Trailblazer's Boots

  4. Whispersilk Cloak

  5. Hall of the Bandit Lord

  6. Rogue's Passage

  7. Dauthi Embrace

  8. Prowler's Helm

Protecting Phage:

  1. Champion's Helm

  2. General's Kabuto

  3. Lightning Greaves

  4. Swiftfoot Boots

  5. Whispersilk Cloak

But what if they bounce Phage and bring her back to the battlefield under your control?:

  1. High Market

  2. Phyrexian Tower

  3. Claws of Gix

  4. Despotic Scepter

Other fun things plus descriptions:

  1. [ Endless Whispers ] So Phage enters the battlefield. Let's say you have something like Despotic Scepter out. You destroy Phage with your Despotic Scepter, target opponent then gets Phage and loses the game.

  2. [ Gray Merchant of Asphodel ] With how many black symbols this deck has, you are bound to gain a lot of life just dropping a Gray Merchant for funsies.

  3. [ Helldozer ] Who doesn't like just ruining someone else's day by destroying a whole bunch of lands?

  4. [ Pontiff of Blight ] Extort can also be quite fun, especially when all of your creatures have it.

  5. [ Deathgrip ] Because screw green. I may be a black deck, but I don't like your stupid green spell. I counter it.

Really, that's about it. I hope to make this deck very soon, but any suggestions are greatly appreciated. One day I will walk in and slap Phage down on the table as my commander and people will laugh. But they won't be laughing for very long once they realize what I can do.

Leave a comment if you have a suggestion for a card that would work well, or even if you think I should take a card out.
