Mizzix of the Izmagnus: Ride the Lightning

Commander / EDH Burn Combo Control Infinite Combo UR (Izzet) Wizards

Forkbeard

As you can likely tell from my other decks, I'm used to filling the table with creatures and turning them sideways. For a change of pace I thought I'd try out a pure spell slinging Izzet deck and Mizzix looks to be the greasy empress of value town.

Something exciting about Mizzix + experience counters is the value that can be had with any spell with buyback, flashback, kicker, multikicker, overload etc. The counters go toward those costs! It's true! Likewise with spells - In fact, spells get a special bonus with Mizzix because you can effectively gain an experience counter any time you cast one: = all current XP counters, the U/R in the casting cost takes you over the current XP counter mark which nets you a new one. Gravy.

So then, how do you win with this thing you ask? The main plan of attack is to simply build up a few Mizzix experience counters and commence with the slingin'. The ultimate goal is a Reiterate combo in order to produce infinite mana, the cornerstone of all Mizzix decks really.

With Mizzix on the table + 4 experience counters + Reiterate + Pyretic Ritual / Reset / Seething Song / Turnabout = mana for days. From there it's a choose your own adventure ending... Blue Sun's Zenith / Braingeyser / Stroke of Genius your opponents to mill them out? Temporal Fissure or Capsize the table (there's a table flip joke in here somewhere)? Ignite Memories forever? Lightning Bolt to all faces for eternity? Scour from Existence the table and anyone who ever sat at it? Banefire , Comet Storm , Fall of the Titans or Fanning the Flames until there's nothing left but your opponent's ashes? Turns for life with Expropriate / Nexus of Fate / Time Warp (yes, they do stack)? You choose!!

The rest of the deck is really just tools to allow all of these terrible things to happen. Utility lands + a few rocks, control spells to prevent everyone from crushing me with their creature armies, fork effects, tutors, card draw, recursion & counterspells + artifacts to protect our squishy little goblin wizard. Even if you can't get the combos going, with enough experience counters you can likely cast something like Capsize multiple times per turn which will usually induce a rage scoop.

Card Draw
Who doesn't need more cards? The classic -cast suite in here are nice to get the Mizzix XP counter train rolling as well:
  • Blue Sun's Zenith
  • Braingeyser
  • Brainstorm
  • Finale of Revelation
  • Mystic Confluence
  • Ponder
  • Preordain
  • Stroke of Genius
  • Time Spiral
  • Counterspells
Absolutely necessary to help protect Mizzix, prevent anyone from messing with our plans or simply stop your opponents in their tracks. The counterspells in particular work nicely for XP counter building:
  • Condescend
  • Fuel for the Cause
  • Force of Negation
  • Force of Will
  • Mystic Confluence
  • Pact of Negation
  • Power Sink
  • Spell Burst
  • Forks
Fork effects. Always useful + have I mentioned that Reiterate is good in this deck?
  • Primal Amulet  Flip
  • Reiterate
  • Friends of Reiterate
Because I know I'm going to have to explain these interactions during games, I'll just leave these Reiterate combo examples here for reference...
  • Pyretic Ritual : 3 lands ( required) + 4 XP counters + Pyretic Ritual + Reiterate = Infinite :
    1. Cast Pyretic Ritual for (cost reduced by thanks to the XP counters).
    2. Cast Reiterate for (cost with Buyback reduced by thanks to the XP counters) targeting your freshly cast Pyretic Ritual .
    3. Allow the copy of Pyretic Ritual to resolve which leaves you with . This allows you to cast Reiterate with Buyback for again, targeting the initial unresolved Pyretic Ritual , leaving you with to spare + from the new copy.
    4. Repeat step 3 infinitely, increasing your mana count by each time. Neat!
  • Reset : 5 lands ( required) + 3 XP counters + Reset + Reiterate = Infinite mana:
    1. Cast Reset for .
    2. Cast Reiterate for (cost with Buyback reduced by thanks to the XP counters) targeting your freshly cast Reset .
    3. Allow the copy of Reset to resolve and untap all your lands. This allows you to cast Reiterate with Buyback for again, targeting the initial unresolved Reset , leaving you with 2 lands open - Tap these to float 2 mana.
    4. Repeat step 3 for eternity, increasing your mana count by each time. Congratulations, you now have ALL THE MANA.
  • Seething Song : 4 lands ( required) + 3 XP counters + Seething Song + Reiterate = Infinite :
    1. Cast Seething Song for (cost reduced by thanks to the XP counters).
    2. Cast Reiterate for (cost with Buyback reduced by thanks to the XP counters) targeting your freshly cast Seething Song .
    3. Allow the copy of Seething Song to resolve which leaves you with . This allows you to cast Reiterate with Buyback for again, targeting the initial unresolved Seething Song , leaving you with to spare + the from the new copy.
    4. Repeat step 3 forever, increasing your mana count by each time. Go ahead and Comet Storm the planet.
  • Turnabout : 6 lands ( required) + 2 XP counters + Turnabout + Reiterate = Infinite mana:
    1. Cast Turnabout for (cost reduced by thanks to the XP counters).
    2. Cast Reiterate for (cost with Buyback reduced by thanks to the XP counters) targeting your freshly cast Turnabout .
    3. Allow the copy of Turnabout to resolve and untap all your lands. This allows you to cast Reiterate with Buyback for again, targeting the initial unresolved Turnabout , leaving you with 2 lands open - Tap these to float 2 mana.
    4. Repeat step 3 to your heart's content, increasing your mana count by each time. Enjoy your never ending flow of and then proceed to crush your enemies, see them driven before you & hear the lamentations of their women.
The stack. It's a hell of a thing.
  • Protect the Hideous Goblin Wizard
Further ways to help save our grotesque lady goblin of mayhem:
  • Command Beacon - I included this here simply because Mizzix will be a target. If you can't protect her, that commander tax starts to add up and Beacon helps quell that expense. Even though it's a 1 shot deal, sometimes that's all you need.
  • Darksteel Plate
  • Lightning Greaves
  • Misdirection
  • Riptide Laboratory - Not only can you prevent Mizzix from getting blasted back to the command zone, this is also handy utility for bouncing and recasting Snapcaster Mage , taking advantage of his nifty ETB effect.
  • Sanctum of Eternity
  • Swiftfoot Boots
  • Recursion
Just when your opponents thought they had thwarted your plans...
  • Finale of Promise
  • Past in Flames
  • Snapcaster Mage
  • Tutors
  • Firemind's Foresight - Go ahead and fetch your combo piece! Reiterate + Pyretic Ritual + Lightning Bolt is the go to here, Reiterate + Reset + Brainstorm works too (draw until you reach your desired spell of doom).
  • Merchant Scroll
  • Mystical Tutor
  • Tolaria West - Utility land tutor! Sneaking Pact of Negation into your hand isn't a bad option either.
  • As far as other win-cons go, I'm aware of the other insta-win tricks out there. In particular, the Runic Repetition + Mystic Retrieval + Intuition combo. It's a pretty cute maneuver and I just might add that piece one day, but for now I'm happy with the variety of shenanigans listed above. I'm not taking this deck on the tournament circuit or anything and I'm pretty sure my kitchen table pals hate me enough for the Reiterate special. I also deliberately left Enter the Infinite & Laboratory Maniac out of here for now, but may decide to add them to the mix eventually (he is a wizard after all). You also might be wondering why I'm not running Mizzix's Mastery or Epic Experiment - The answer is because my spells will fizzle. Again, I may revisit this line of thinking somewhere down the line.

And that's it. It's definitely outside of my comfort zone as I'm not really a big combo player, but I thought I'd try my hand at some true Izzet douchebaggery for a bit of variety and also for science. If you see anything in here that you think is preposterous, let me know! Likewise if you think there's something missing.

Also, props where they're due, I took a great deal of inspiration from this episode of Command Zone as well as MrHighscore's fun little creation: Miss Coupon never pays the retail price
