Flying Sky Train

Commander / EDH*

VoeJozzo

Yay! We get to avoid the headache that is EDH Manabases! This deck has an inherently easy time with lands--just run Plains! This also means that we don't have to worry about shocking ourselves (or really, bolting ourselves with a fetch) in order to get perfect mana. There's still a couple of utility lands in here, and Rogue's Passage permits some useful shenanigans with Voltron.
Boo! There's surprisingly few monocolor mana rocks that are any good, so we're stuck with the various incarnations of 3 CMC artifacts with some okayish upside and 'T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.' Cultivator's Caravan also gives us a custom-built mana rock that draws us a card on ETB if we play Sram on curve. Sword of the Animist and Explorer's Scope are two more draw spells that can ramp us down the road.
Get a half dozen or so of these cards on Sram and keep swinging. Give Sram vigilance or use untap shenanigans, and make it so that anyone who tries to strike back at you hits a wall of auras and equipment that's able to process even the hugest green Timmy cards into that much pink slime. Bestow creatures should always be cast as auras if there is a body on the board already, as they do a decent job of discouraging removal, and enable you to reattach equipment to them during your next turn, making sure that you don't get knocked back on the boardstate. Totem Armor auras are even more important, as they force multiple removal spells or even Wrath effects to be used to remove a single, suited up up creature.
These are the cards that exist to help Voltron assemble in some way. Stoneforge Mystic, Relic Seeker, and Restoration Specialist all help us either tutor or recur pieces of Voltron. High-priority targets will be literally anything starting with 'Sword of' (yes, Sword of the Animist counts,) but also our aura-based removal spells. Sigarda's Aid makes all of your auras and equipment into them, and it's an all-star. Once you have this card out, it is much, much harder for you to lose.
Creatures with no particularly Voltronesque use fall under this category. Generally I'm a believer in the theory that every card should directly and linearly help its deck win, but cards like Toolcraft Exemplar and Kytheon, Hero of Akros   all offer far too much for an investment of one mana. Thalia, Heretic Cathar offers another alternative commander, as well as strong, keyword-heavy potential beatstick wielders, so they get to remain in as well.
Much of our removal is subpar. White has access to extremely few counterspells, all of which suck, and while it has good removal in general, we've deliberately kept it to more specialized spells here. Fumigate is an acceptable 5-mana Wrath, but Planar Outburst is often better, as it can give us a body to immediately stick some of our leftover equipment onto. Winds of Rath is our dream Rath of God effect, as it's typically entirely one-sided.
There's four Alternative Commanders in here, although two of them are worth speaking of. Kytheon, Hero of Akros   provides a slighly more aggressive start, and the ability to become a 4/4, hard-to-remove body for crewing vehicles after a few turns, but lacks any serious win condition. Thalia, Heretic Cathar is good at punishing greedy mana bases and colorful Commanders. A fetchland loses two turns of tempo agaisnt Thalia, and a Shock or Fastland becomes a mere Guildgate or Tapland. In addition, she works slightly better as Voltron than the other alternates, although the deck tends to have far too little card draw without Sram at the helm.

The the two 'good' alternatives are obviously Balan, Wandering Knight, and Nahiri, the Lithomancer. Balan offers extreme mana efficiency for our Equipment package, and I look forward to experimenting with him quite a bit more. I have tested Nahiri in the Command Zone, but as a Planeswalker, she tends to get hated off the table relatively quickly. Her Ultimate rarely procs, although when it does, it is incredibly versatile.
