Nyxborn Shieldmate Discussion

CrimsonWings3689 on Daxos, the unbeatable

At your request I took a look and wanted to offer some suggestions to make this stronger. That being said I have no idea of what your budget is like or how your acquire cards. Take what I say with a grain of salt.

What I would consider adding:

Isolated Chapel - self explanatory

Reliquary Tower - should be in every deck as a means of preventing discard due to mana flood/screw

Vault of the Archangel - you're running a deck where the creatures are your win condition, it's in your colors, might as well have the ability to abuse lifelink/deathtouch

Serra's Sanctum - super pricey for a single card, but well worth it in this sort of deck

Luminarch Ascension - 4/4 flying angels for 1W is pretty big, drops early, can be a target for sure, but value is there.

Land Tax - any ramp is good ramp, and this is one of the best

Erebos, God of the Dead - Great for card draw, side note of preventing others from gaining life

Orzhov Signet - more ramp, color fixing

Aura of Silence - tax opponents playing enchantments/artifacts, doubles as a removal spell. 100% necessary

Blind Obedience - tax opponents, possible life drain. Tempo card to make sure that you get to hit more often than they do

Mortify, Utter End, Anguished Unmaking, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Sudden Spoiling & Return to Dust - your instant removal package is abysmal, you have to be able to answer threats as they show up. Best case scenario, you make tokens with Daxos at the end of the turn before yours and you save your spot removal. Worst case scenario, you use the removal and make less tokens, but you don't die to a combo or something you can't deal with before your next turn. Can't stress enough how important Instants are in this format.

Cards I would remove:

Daxos's Torment - a 5/5 flier on your turn that can't block is mediocre outside of recovering from boardwipes, even then, it's too slow.

Defang & Pacifism- doesn't do enough. Cheap enchantment, should ideally be better removal.

Nyxborn Shieldmate - too weak of an effect. I get the "Enchantments matter" theme, but it's a slot better used for removal

God-Favored General - you don't have a reliable way to get evasion, so this will be chumpblocked and die more often than not. Daxos's effect is on cast, not etb, so it's a big gamble for a small effect.

Ghostblade Eidolon - far too expensive to Bestow, too weak to hard cast. If you want a double strike enchantment you should run Battle Mastery instead.

Celestial Archon - somewhat decent, but I have concerns about it being a worthwhile addition.

Blessed Spirits - too vanilla, gets big too slowly as it's based on cast so you can't abuse it with Daxos

Vivid Marsh & Vivid Meadow - you're running 2 colors, you don't need these. If you're going to run a land that ETB tapped, it might as well be one of the other numerous lands that comes in tapped that gives you an additional effect such as Scoured Barrens

i like this deck idea i had fun with a similar one with a splash of red. i found Seeker of the Way was a nice addition as i could target Phalanx Leader and end up with a 4/4 liflinker to hit with. in the red splash version i used cantrip enchantments/spells like Angelic Gift, Chosen by Heliod,Dragon Mantle and Defiant Strike to make shore my hand was always full and to make sure i never missed a land drop. 2 copies of each of Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Skin Invasion  Flip also made a great addition to help deter removal and act a resurrection.

another version of this deck that i tried to make work was heroic/human/solder/enchantment tribal as the are 4 tribals that coincide and work well together. a playset of Bonds of Faith was amazing in this deck as it was used to either pump or pacify on demand Gideon's Lawkeeper, Nyxborn Shieldmate was also amazing and Veteran Swordsmith acted as Phalanx Leader copies 5 and 6. and once it rotates out Thalia's Lieutenant with work really well in you deck (price will go right down after rotation) and for times when you low on spells but high on mana i would recommend 2-3 Forbidding Watchtower

and finally why are you not playing a play set of Emerge Unscathed??! you dont have any other protection from removal and its 2 heroic triggers and is instant speed protection (+heroic trigger) and the next turn its another protection + heroic trigger and giving that creature unblockable!!!

Cards I think could easily be cut:

Web- worst of the reach cards

Auramancer- Better options, see below

Heliod's Emissary- not worth the mana

Nyxborn Rollicker- not useful

Restoration Specialist-have to sacrifice only hits single one

Angelic Gift- flying worse than anything else, draw is unnecessary

Brilliant Halo- nice recursion, but not that great

Eternal Warrior- doesn't do enough to include

Forced Adaptation- too slow

Gift of the Woods- too niche, point is to not be blocked

Instill Energy- haste is eh, untap is basically vigilance, not really necessary

Knightly Valor- CMC too high

Mammoth Umbra-

Ordeal of Purphoros- slow for what it does

Regeneration, Savage Silhouette, Serpent Skin, Trollhide- Most wraths get around the regeneration anyway, you can afford to lose anyone to spot removal except your commander... which is already hexproof.

Venomous Fangs- your chump blockers don't need it, Uril's gonna be huge already

Vigilance- not enough in this deck

The Three Vows- Irrelevant as they can still block your guys. Maybe one if you do a lot of multiplayer.

Nyxborn Shieldmate

Entangler- high CMC

Vigilant Martyr- same issues with regeneration, at the very least replace with Dawn Charm

Venom- meh all around

Open the Vaults- replace with Retether/Second Sunrise

Cards that are on the verge:

Auratouched Mage-higher CMC, but it does open up more expensive auras

Conviction- Better than Brilliant Halo, still not that great

Fists of Ironwood- Superfluous

Hammerhand- meh card

Lifelink- Nice art, unless you're getting a lot of direct damage, not that helpful

Lightform- Looks okay, too many non-creatures though

Murder Investigation

Oath of the Ancient Wood- Faster than the ordeal cards, no other benefits though

Shape of the Wiitigo, Shield of the Oversoul, Hyena Umbra, Glaring Aegis- You have to cut something

Indrik Umbra-Keep if you can find something else to go easily.

Cards you should consider adding:

Retether- Bodiless Auramancer but better

Second Sunrise- Get passed their wrath effects, not a first choice though

Lightning Bolt- Spot removal is nice

Dawn Charm- See above

Samuel-Frederick on $10 Boros Weenie

Hey, just a few suggestions for budget boros weenie that I think are worth having a think about.

Doomed Traveler isn't a bit hitter, but is removal and wrath protection, and can teach about card value. Dragon Hunter, one mana 2/1 with a slight upside, can't complain about that really, basically an Elite Vanguard. Goblin Glory Chaser is a one mana 2/2 menace (in theory), a different mechanic to play with, and can hit hard. Another new mechanic for the deck, and another lesson in value are Nyxborn Rollicker, and Nyxborn Shieldmate. Another 2 power for one mana is Rakdos Cackler, not very thematic but fits for power and colour. Then there is the boss of weenie, the awesome top man himself, the Selfless Cathar! So much love for him. He's a great card for new players to play and learn with.

When building a deck that is going wide then Akroan Hoplite can get big. Not all that exciting but Cerodon Yearling is fast at least. Teaching about value and the dangers of going wide, you can have cards that go tall such as Sunhome Guildmage, and Truefire Paladin a bit as well.

If the deck has some boosts then Iroas's Champion is cool, or another fast card with Skyknight Legionnaire

I'm not excited by the enchantments you have, I'd rather individual ones that can boost them over cards that have little effect, or are defensive such as Brave the Sands. Just go aggressive with things such as Ordeal of Purphoros, and Madcap Skills. Swap the three mana Fervor for the awesome Expedite. It does what you need by not slowing you down later on, it allows you to run fewer lands (curving at two or with a few three drops I'd be happy with 20 lands), and it doesn't cost you a card. If you were spending more on it then Legion's Initiative is all sorts of awesome.

Just a few things to think about.

Hey there. For me, it doesn't feel like black is adding anywhere near enough here. For one mana I'd want 4x Trailblazer as well as the 4x Hoplite, then for two mana just drop the bloodcrazed and run the full 4x Skyguard, and 4x Hero of Iroas, as both of them are doing a lot more. Then when it comes to the enchantments, black isn't doing a great deal there either. The bonus of mono-white, the consistency of the land, and if you curve at two you can even drop the land to 18/19 as well. With black though you do get Agent of the Fates, who I love, but may not be fast enough for what you're looking for. He's so good though!

Ethereal Armor should be a four of. Ethereal Armor plus Hero of Iroas is awesome, and when I play it, I like to take advantage of both and run Hopeful Eidolon, Nyxborn Shieldmate, and Eidolon of Countless Battles. They are protection against removal and wrath, they are reduced in cost when bestowed from the Hero, and they count towards Ethereal Armor. They are so much more powerful than they may first appear. If you're sticking with black, then you get these beasts to choose from as well, Gnarled Scarhide, Spiteful Returned, and Herald of Torment. You could run Nighthowler as well, I'm not as keen on it in the build, but depends on what the decks you are against are like as well. He is good post wrath though!

I'd drop Predator's Gambit as you'll nearly always have multiple creatures on the field, and Edge of the Divinity as you don't have any creatures that can take advantage of it. Not the cheapest card but Daybreak Coronet is obviously all sorts of powerful! Spirit Mantle is also pretty popular, and really can tilt opponents who aren't ready for it.

Just a few things to have a think about, see if you like the sound of them.

Winds of Rath may be better for you than Deadly Tempest, Erebos, God of the Dead, Whip of Erebos, Fate Unraveler, Nyxborn Shieldmate, Spear of Heliod, and Athreos, God of Passage would probably speed up your deck vs some of the bigger clunkier creatures/spells. Also there is some enchantress-esque kor chick who works good with enchantments. I'll dig some more for ya'.

Panzerforge on Piles of Pauper Legal Paper

Okay, from what you have here I would go 1 of 2 ways (and maybe combine them after playtesting.)

You have a solid pack of griffin, and could run in that direction, beating people down with heavy fliers.

I'm more likely to go with:

4x Akroan Skyguard
2x Heliod's Pilgrim
2x Auramancer
4x Nyxborn Shieldmate
2x Hopeful Eidolon
2x Harvestguard Alseids

4x Armament of Nyx
4x Oppressive Rays
4x Ethereal Armor
2x Lifelink
3x Pacifism

4x Gods Willing
2x Celestial Flare
1x Gideon's Reproach

20x Plains

This is, of course, just where I would start testing from.

You have good sideboard options in there for more removal, lifegain, protection, and token creation.

Mono-red burn is going to be mean to you (but might be off-set by enough lifegain in your SB), and mass-creature/token decks (like my Spawning Pool Party.) as you don't have access to good board wipes.

Raging_Squiggle on Mortal's Ardor and double strike

I fail to see where 7 damage appears anywhere here. Two-Headed Cerberus's power is 1, not 7.

Whenever a creature has a blocked declared against it, that creature is considered blocked for the rest of combat, even if the creature that was blocking it is either removed from combat or leaves the battlefield prior to combat damage.

During the first combat damage step, Two-Headed Cerberus will deal 2 damage to Nyxborn Shieldmate, making your opponent gain 2 life and killing your Nyxborn Shieldmate. Then, in the regular combat damage step, your Two-Headed Cerberus will attempt to deal 2 damage to the creature blocking it. But since that creature already died, there is nothing to deal damage to so no damage is dealt. Your opponent will gain a total of 2 life.

Note that if Two-Headed Cerberus has trample (Perhaps from Archetype of Aggression), that 2 damage in the regular combat damage step will trample over the dead creature to be dealt directly to you. In this case, your opponent would gain a total of 4 life.
