Elderfang Venom

Enchantment

Attacking Elves you control have deathtouch.

Whenever an Elf you control dies (is put into the graveyard from the battlefield. Tokens enter the graveyard before they cease to exist), each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.

In the combat phase there are a few steps:

  • Entering Combat
  • Declare Attackers
  • Declare Blockers
  • Before Damage
  • After Damage
  • Ending Combat

During each of these steps you have a chance to respond. (In fact, everyone in the commander group has a chance to respond.) Your opponent does not hold priority during each of these steps. Since you made them lose 2 life from Elderfang Venom before damage, they died from the state base action for being at zero or a negative life total. (Unless they had a card like Platinum Angel on the battlefield.) The combat damage is not delt.

In the future, it is very important to understand the steps of combat. For example, if you're opponent controls cards such as: Aurelia, the Warleader, Kaalia of the Vast, or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre you have to destroy or exile them before attackers are declared. (Earlier in their turn or on the Entering Combat phase.) Otherwise their normal on attack triggers occur.

Hello, so I'm playing a commander game and my opponent is on his attack phase, with one life, he attacks me with 12 4/4 flying zombies, that's 48 damage and I'm at 42. However, I'm playing Elf tribal, and I have Elderfang Venom on the battlefield and I cast Tergrid's Shadow, sacrificing 2 elves dealing two damage to him killing him. Does the attack still happen even though he is died?

Hey, well done for a first deck on a budget. Good job adding more one drop mana Elves and Ezuri :)

Sol Ring, Elvish Archdruid and Command Tower are missing. All are excellent budget cards for this deck. Lathril's 2/3 base p/t with menace is not enough to reliably do much Commander damage without help. Consider expanding on three directions you can go to give Lathril help?

  • More Elf lords and other anthem effects to increase her p/t.
  • More +1/+1 counters sources or pump until end of turn to increase her p/t.
  • Effects, Auras or Equipment that increases p/t and/or provide more evasion for attacking.

Playing a combination of all these can increase the consistency of support for Lathril doing Commander damage.

Elvish Archdruid and Tyvar Kell are very good tribal cards for Elves. Cultist of the Absolute for one mana is one of the most powerful ways to help Lathril, 5/6 p/t with tons of evasion. The combination of flying, deathtouch and menace makes Lathril a scary threat who opponents aren't going to want to block. Deathtouch with menace is a great combination of abilities because any creature who blocks Lathril will die in combat. Lathril provides token creature fodder to pay the sac cost of Cultist at your upkeep.

Elderfang Venom and Thunderfoot Baloth evasion applies to all Elves you control and that can be helpful for big attacks with token Elves. It can improve gameplay when you can get beneficial effects from lands that help your Commander.

Some changes to consider:

Panharmonicon is an expensive price card here that's really not doing much because you have some creature enter the battlefield (ETB) effects, but not enough to play a four drop card to increase them. Titania, Nature's Force is fun card for Elementals, but she doesn't really belong with Lathril as Commander.

Good luck with your deck.

It looks like you need more ramp and card draw the most.
Skullclamp and every version of Deadly Dispute like Altar's Reap, Reckoner's Bargain and Village Rites could help. You should have a mana dork or an elf token idling at any time that you can sacrifice to draw more cards. Return of the Wildspeaker could double as another overrun effect.
For ramp I'd go with Farhaven Elf, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Rampant Growth and Nature's Lore.
Blackblade Reforged, Stoneforge Masterwork, Crown of Skemfar and Alpha Status can make Lathril ridiculously big.
Elvish Guidance can be your budget version of Gaea's Cradle.
Elderfang Venom seems better than Bow of Nylea.
Windgrace's Judgment is in my opinion a strictly better Casualties of War because destroing a land can make you an enemy of the table and with Windgrace's Judgment you can answer 3 biggest threats on the battlefield regardless of their type at instant speed.

Okay so I'm new to deckbuilding, especially for EDH so I'm just wondering if anyone has any useful/practical suggestions for this deck. I thought Abomination of Llanowar was a cool card, so I wanted to build around that concept of getting a lot of elves onto the field and my graveyard to really boost its power and toughness.

One thing I'll mention is that, with the exception of cards that are already present in the deck, I don't want to spend more then $3-5 on a single card. So keeping all of this in mind, any suggestions?

Commander: - Abomination of Llanowar

Planeswalkers: - Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury - Tyvar Kell

Creatures: - Elvish Eulogist - Elvish Archdruid - Imperious Perfect - Lys Alana Huntmaster - Immaculate Magistrate - Marwyn, the Nurturer - Elvish Visionary - Shaman of the Pack - Lathril, Blade of the Elves - Dwynen, Gilt-Leaf Daen - Beast Whisperer - Timberwatch Elf - Elvish Mystic - Canopy Tactician - Poison-Tip Archer - Skemfar Avenger - Skemfar Shadowsage - Wolverine Riders - Ruthless Winnower - Wellwisher - Golgari Findbroker - Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord - Rhys the Exiled - Nightshade Harvester - Gilt-Leaf Winnower - Elvish Doomsayer - Storrev, Devkarin Lich - Nadier's Nightblade - Fyndhorn Elves - Llanowar Elves

Instants: - Putrefy - Golgari Charm - Murder - Village Rites - Grisly Salvage - Wrap in Vigor - Cast Down - Malakir Rebirth  Flip - Ghastly Demise - Infuse with Vitality

Sorcery: - Cultivate - Rampant Growth - Eyeblight Massacre - Shamanic Revelation - Casualties of War - Dig Up - Victimize - Sign in Blood - Spark Harvest - Diabolic Tutor - Deadly Brew - Bone Shards - Elvish Promenade

Artifacts: - Sol Ring - Arcane Signet - Commander's Sphere

Enchantments: - Elderfang Venom - Moldervine Reclamation - Prowess of the Fair

Lands: - Evolving Wilds - Command Tower - Path of Ancestry - Llanowar Wastes - Jungle Hollow - Skemfar Elderhall - Golgari Guildgate - Tainted Wood - Necroblossom Snarl - Myriad Landscape - Foul Orchard - Darkmoss Bridge - Forest x13 - Swamp x13

Hey, Champion of Lambholt and Fallen Ideal are the cards I use most to give Lathril evasion and Lambholt makes all other Elves/creatures I control unblockable too. Lambholt gets a counter each time a creature token is created which can make her power huge fast. Fallen is good with the aristocrat strategy because it's a sac outlet that can increase Lathril's power a lot until end of turn. Pair Fallen with Elderfang Venom .

Hey, on a budget well done upgrading the precon.

There's some cards in the precon to consider adding:

One problem with the precon is there's too many Swamps. Green mana is overall much more important to have than black mana. You still need black mana, but playing the same amount of Forests and Swamps hurts the consistency of having green mana early. This is especially problematic when playing so many green one drop Elves which you want to be able to consistently cast turn one. Consider cutting Swamps for more Golgari dual lands?

Good luck with your deck.
