Spark Harvest Discussion

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I've updated the deck and sideboard with a lot of your suggestions. However, I will point out why I didn't include a few. For starters, Dismember is a no go in my book, as losing 4 life, however it may seem small, can be bad later on. As for Spark Harvest , my reasoning behind it is because I can sacrifice a single Eldrazi Scion/ Eldrazi Spawn for its cost, which shouldn't be that big of a deal. Furthermore, Eldrazi Skyspawner isn't too great for the purpose mentioned, as I put in Mist Intruder as a means of potentially exiling really good cards the opponent has before they even draw them. It's luck-based, I know, but it worked for me in the past. Finally, while I see your point with Hamletback Goliath , one of your suggestions I need to explain. Beanstalk Giant , for example, relies on lands. However, if my main means of ramp is scions, it's not gonna get very big. The rest seem fine. Thank you for your help though! You helped a lot!

Yeah... I know that feeling of selling cards I shouldn't have.

Since you are crazy enough to wanna hear my suggestions, then here I come. I have to say one thing before though. A sideboard is somewhere you can put cards to switch between matches to fix your deck's weak point. So, even if have one Garruk, absolutely mainboard him. That would make the deck more consistent. Having him in the sideboard doesn't help.

Mutiny is another card that just isn't good. It's too unreliable as it needs your opponent to have at the very least two creatures and one of them needs to be strong enough to kill the other, in which case you'll kill the weaker but will still need to deal with a strong creature. Kozilek's Return isn't budget friendly. However, it's a good boardwipe that doubles if you cast a big Eldrazi, clearing the way for an attack. If you strictly want a single target removal you could use Lightning Bolt , Wild Slash , Abrade or, if want to have as few colors as possible, Reality Shift .

Same goes for Spark Harvest . Too unreliabe and sacrificing the resources you'll need to accomplish your goal doesn't seem good. You can use Dismember instead as really few creatures can survive -5/-5 and you wouldn't need a black source anymore.

Mist Intruder is just generic, and ingest isn't a really good mechanic. Run Eldrazi Skyspawner instead. It's one mana more expensive but also ramps you for one mana.

Hamletback Goliath is cute altough being nothing else. It's not bad per say, but offers nothing more than just a big body. No protection, no evasion, not even trample. Even if it becomes a 40/40 it can be blocked by a 1/1. Just as a comparison, Hamletback Goliath can be destroyed, bounced or exiled, but Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger can't be destroyed and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn has protection from an absurd amount of things while simultaneously having evasion. You're investing a lot of mana in those Eldrazi and they "pay you back" by impacting the board as soon as they come in and are rather resilient. Rather than the Goliath, you could use Emrakul's Hatcher , Beanstalk Giant , Oblivion Sower or even Drowner of Hope . Here's a more organized way to explain:

  1. Emrakul's Hatcher - Not nearly as big and has no potential to grow, but helps you "ramp". Also is a red card, so makes you have to properly adjust your manabase accordingly.

  2. Beanstalk Giant - Not as big, but can grow really big if go all in the ramp plan as it also helps you ramp by being a ramp spell.

  3. Oblivion Sower - Can be searched with From Beyond and disrupts the opponent while also stealing their lands and ramping you.

  4. Drowner of Hope - Sort of a Control(?) option. It can sacrifice you scion tokens to tap your oppoent's most troublesome creature and it's also searchable by From Beyond .

I've been writing a lot. Feel free to agree or disagree with what I said. Just because I think something would be better it doesn't it will be better or that you should like it, after all, the deck is yours.

Also, if you could change the format to Casual it would help a lot. When writing these comment, TappedOut can directly show you cards I want to suggest. However, since the deck is labeled as Unknown format, anything I try to recommend ends up being recognized as illegal.

Piolun I think if we were more token centered, like Aristocrats, then Spark Harvest would be worth it. Right now, in the build, the tokens are more of a side theme. I think if you main boarded Goblin Rabblemaster or used some other token generator, it might be worth it

bankrupt_on_selling those are all great removal spells in our colors that I have used or still use at one time or the other. Fatal Push and Dreadbore are essential right now, with a myriad of planeswalkers and some cheap/big creatures coming from Jund decks. Dreadbore also helps us stay somewhat competitive against Tron based decks. As for Path to Exile , if you forgo playing Blood Moon , I would play 2 copies. Since I have Blood Moon in the side, I took out the Path to Exile , since I don't want to give my opponent basics to negate Blood Moon . The choice is up to you. I personally reverted back to a control/stun Mardu Pyromancer, in which Blood Moon can steal us some games.

YamishiTheWickedOne I LOVE using Hazoret the Fervent . Dog Mom gives us a big, beefy, hasty, indestructible creature that can also burn late. We don't want to see multiple copies, which is why I just play the one. I think she is still Modern applicable, even with more available exile based spells.

JacenSolo29 hmmm... with Lightning Skelemental and the other Rakdos elementals, it comes down to what you want your deck to do. The Rakdos elemental deck is fast and stun heavy, with a crap ton of discard. It can be weak to counter and control decks, and even graveyard hate, but might have an edge to Tron due to speed. I think, again, it's up to you. I wouldn't play them here simply because I want to value with Lingering Souls and Young Pyromancer . Therefore, you would need to change the build here to be, I think, solely Rakdos and hit hard, and hit fast. Unearth is good with Seasoned Pyromancer and the elemental creatures, but doesn't go well with Bedlam Reveler and Hazoret the Fervent . Test it out!

Thank you all for your comments! Sorry that took so long! School got busy, but I'm looking forward to continuing to test this in the new Modern Meta!

Here are some suggestions:

You would probably benefit the most from a better ramp-package. Since you don't want to bother buying expensive lands, I'd recommend signets (which are really good for fixing colors) and talismans: Orzhov Signet , Azorius Signet , Dimir Signet , Talisman of Progress , Talisman of Dominance , Talisman of Hierarchy , & Smothering Tithe has powerful potential as well.

Ponder and Preordain are extremely powerful in helping you fix colors in the early game. They allow you to dig for the right lands. They're also good at any point in a game. Gitaxian Probe is easy to cast (at basically no cost) since you gain life.

Speaking of life-gain, you have some good ways to gain but no payoffs for it. Alhammarret's Archive seems to combo well with your general. Other ones that come to mind are Graveborn Muse , Greed , and Necropotence

I'd cut Crush Dissent and No Escape for cheaper counterspells. Lower CMC instants give you more opportunities to use them. Swan Song is BROKEN. Counterspell is good. Dispel is amazing but only if you feel your meta is threatening you with counter magic of their own. Muddle the Mixture and Narset's Reversal are unreal. Sometimes you'll misplay them though - they require some experience.

I'd cut Spark Harvest for Swords to Plowshares . Exiling is better than killing (avoids indestructibility), and you can even use swords on yourself if you need life in a pinch.

Diabolic Tutor and Long-Term Plans are cheap to buy. Tutors are necessary in control if you want to effectively answer your opponent's threats.

Dig Through Time might be nice for you, but I can't say for sure. And since you told me you were concerned of decking yourself: Elixir of Immortality

Here are some more expensive cards if you ever wanted to upgrade: Rhystic Study , Phyrexian Arena , Watery Grave , Godless Shrine , & Hallowed Fountain

B.A.N.E.

Gideon's Sacrifice could redirect damage to a thing you don't like as much, however I don't recommend it too much.

Bolt Bend is a GREAT spell that is very flexible, such as changing the target planeswalker from an opponent's Spark Harvest to, let's say, their Kenrith, the Returned King .

Kaya's Ghostform can give your permanent an extra life.

(I was looking at War of the Spark cards when doing this since I don't feel like looking into suggestions from other sets right now).

Please post your decklist here when you finish making it.

I would suggest dropping 2 Diregraf Ghoul (Leaving you still with 10 1 drops) and adding 2 more Thoughtseize . Depending on your meta, I would also suggest Fatal Push over Spark Harvest . Also adding 1 or 2 Castle Locthwain over swamps costs nothing and may win you a game or 2. 2-4 Liliana, Untouched By Death would help with your late game. You may be able to cut Dark Salvation for it.

I like the deck! The Zombie tribe is one of my favorites.

Love to see new commander players! You've got the makings of a fun deck here -- Orzhov is one of my favorite color combos. IMO, you need three things: card draw, removal, and more/faster mana acceleration. For all three, there are cards that synergize with sacrifice/death triggers. Here are a few --

Disciple of Bolas

Damnable Pact / Night's Whisper / Sign in Blood (more like Read the Bones)

Greed

Utter End

Anguished Unmaking

Bone Splinters / Spark Harvest

Black Market

Sacrifice

Dark Ritual

Last, if you have the budget and/or want to make the investment, three great (and expensive) lands in Commander are Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , Phyrexian Tower , and of course Cabal Coffers . Happy brewing!

Fireblade Artist seems like a good sac outlet for the deck, it lets you sac footlight fiends for relevant damage in the mid to late game. I would personally cut 2x Spark Harvest , 1x Spawn of Mayhem and 1x Shock .
