This is my take on the Golgari Value Toad a.k.a. The Gitrog Monster.

The build started out as a rather budget one since I didn't own cards like Azusa or Exploration back in the days... it evolved over the years and I'm really happy with it.

It's a lands/shenanigans matter deck with a lot of different synergies built into it:

  • you can sac lands and generate Elementals with Titania
  • you have all the different tools for ramping up like crazy and get landfall triggers on Ob-Nixilis, Avenger of Zendikar or Rampaging Baloths
  • you have the opportunity to go (which is what scenarios often end in) into a combo-ish turn where you put mana into your pool, sac the lands for Squandered Ressources, draw cards via Gitrog, cast Splendid Reclamation, sac the lands again and cast a giant Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate
  • Jarad can fling giant creatures like Terravore or Centaur Vinecrasher, while the latter can easily be recurred like 2 or 3 times a turn and hence blast around 40 to 60 points of damage...

As you can see, there is also the Skirge Familiar, Oblivion Crown and Dakmor Salvage package in there. I usually shy away from cEDH like synergies, but this can really help when you need to one-shot a nasty opponent with the frog itself.

PS: Of course, the mana base can be optimized, you can run stuff like Mox Diamond etc. but I - having my group in mind - did not want to build it too OP... Gitrog is a heck of a Commander as is... you can also include cards like Thespian Stage and Dark Depths which not only can be searched up rather easily but also can be recurred with multiple land drops and Crucible of Worlds...

I found that with this build, you're pretty well equipped for anything. It can be busted and storm off like crazy (given the right cards) but can also just function as the Golgari value engine and grind out the game
