Strixhaven Commander: An Elephant Never Forgets

Commander / EDH* RW (Boros)

enation24

With Strixhaven comes a bunch of awesome new legendary creatures. One such creature is Quintorius, Field Historian , an Elephant Cleric for 3RW that gives you a 3/2 Red and White Spirit Creature Token whenever one or more cards leave your graveyard. They also give Spirits you control +1/+0. When I first saw this card I immediately thought of how similar it was to Tormod, the Desecrated, one of my favorite legends to come out of Commander Legends and got right to work on turning that deck from black-white to red-white. It plays identically to that deck, rewarding you for having cards enter and leave your graveyard over and over, creating an army of 4/2 Spirits.

Red has a lot of ways to get cards into your graveyard. The most common way is through looting, discarding cards to draw new ones. Cards like Pirate's Pillage , Faithless Looting , and Daretti, Scrap Savant allow you to fill your graveyard with cards to bring back later on, while drawing you new cards to possibly get them back. Faithless Looting and Daretti, Scrap Savant even have built-in ways to remove cards from your graveyard to trigger Quintorius, making more spirits. You can also mill yourself with cards like Altar of Dementia , Heretic's Punishment , or Codex Shredder . Maybe you will even mill over cards like Ox of Agonas , Phoenix of Ash , or Flamewake Phoenix which can get themselves out of the graveyard, or Anger to give your creatures haste!

White provides most of the recursion effects. You can reanimate creatures with Reya Dawnbringer , Marshal's Anthem , or Emeria Shepherd among others. There are also two infinite combos which allow you to bring creatures into and out of your graveyard, getting you an army of Spirits with your commander. Gift of Immortality + Sun Titan and Angelic Renewal + Shepherd of the Cosmos go infinite when paired with a sacrifice outlet like Altar of Dementia , as the enchantment will bring back the creature when the creature dies, then the creature brings back the enchantment when it enters the battlefield. Karmic Guide + Reveillark work in a similar way, bringing each other back over and over when paired with a sacrifice outlet.

I am glad they are adding more variety to Red and White with this set and am excited to see more cards as they come out! Thanks for taking the time to check out the deck!
