... Future consideration: ...

... Cuts:

Spell Pierce, Concerted Defense (Usefulness 1/5)

  • It's just so easy to pay for these. Nobody plays a board wipe on curve. Creatures are a surprisingly big problem too since so many creatures now are just ETB spells with bodies attached (and usually getting doubled too).

Faerie Miscreant (Usefulness 1/5)

  • Only included as a cheap flying rogue. There are better options even in this niche.

Hypnotic Siren (Usefulness 1/5)

  • A great way to deal with problem creatures, but the bestow cost is insanely high. If one creature is that big of a problem, they probably have protection for it. It would be better to swing and hope for turns I can spin into a win, or just accept the loss.

Harrier Strix (Usefulness 2/5)

  • One of the few emergency draw options in the deck for when Edric is locked out, but it's only okay outside of that emergency scenario.

Diversion Unit (Usefulness 2/5)

  • Miscast on a stick, but it has a somewhat high cost already and requires an additional cost to activate. Uses up a lot of blue mana, and has no relative creature types. It's not a bad card though.

Dragon Sniper (Usefulness 3/5)

  • Amazing keywords, 1cmc, and uses green mana. The only possible issue I could have with it is that it isn't as proactive for the gameplan because it isn't true evasion and doesn't have any relevant creature types.

Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse (Usefulness 4/5)

  • One of the deck's best lategame finishers, and a decent token generator early on in a pinch. However, leaving her on the field makes it pretty obvious that I'm going to end the game soon so she draws every piece of removal, but playing her and activating her immediately is an 8 mana investment.

Bident of Thassa (Usefulness 5/5)

  • A fine Coastal Piracy effect, just the worst one and the easiest to replace with a more efficient one or one with a better upside.

.

... Adds:

Flitterwing Nuisance

  • 1/1 Flying Rogue/Fairy with a one-time Coastal Piracy attached. That's badass.

Looter il-Kor, Shoreline Looter, Suspicious Stowaway

  • 2cmc unblockable looter rogues do a decent job of justifying their higher mana cost. They give an outlet for otherwise useless green mana, and let me see more cards. They can also give me a possible out if Edric is hated off the board early and I need emergency draw.

Waterbender Ascension

  • It's a worse Coastal Piracy, but getting it online isn't a tall order for this deck, and the lower cost makes it easier to fit into a turn while playing creatures and holding up counterspell mana. It seems like a decent include.

Toski, Bearer of Secrets

  • Coastal Piracy on a stick. While it's easier to remove in theory, being able to draw a card off of someone tapped out seems like a decent upside, and it uses up my green mana.

Arcane Denial

  • It's just too good. I thought I had a copy but I didn't. If I did, I'd put it in right away.

Bridgeworks Battle

  • 3 mana can have Edric take care of a utility creature, which is an awful rate, but it's an untapped land on its backside.

Hydroelectric Specimen

  • 3 mana can protect Edric, which is an awful rate, but it's an untapped land on its backside.

.

... Maybe:

Plumecreed Escort

  • Reasonable protection for Edric. Can also just be flashed in as an extra flyer. No relevant creature types though.

Thieving Skydiver

  • Can grab a mana rock, swiftfoot boots, or even a problem artifact. Also doubles as a flying rogue.

Nightveil Sprite

  • Nightveil Sprite is a flying rogue that surveils on attack, which can help with draws. This one isn't as rock-solid as the 2cmc looters, so it's only a maybe.

Resculpt

  • Versatile removal option. It sucks to have something like a draw punisher land on the board early and then be stuck with no way to remove it for several turns.

Lofty Denial

  • Paying 4 is a high enough cost that I feel like it would stop a lot of the most annoying spells from resolving.

Counterspell

  • The classic Counterspell is versatile, but costing two pips of blue mana makes it surprisingly high investment in this deck since the mana base gets clogged by a lot of green mana, and the blue mana is used for most spells in the deck so there's only so much of it that can be used at a time.

Caustic Caterpillar, Trygon Predator

  • Caustic Caterpillar is removal on a cheap albeit non-evasive stick. The deck likes sticks and could use some more hard removal.

  • Trygon Predator is repeatable removal, but needs to get over summoning sickness and land combat damage in order to function.

Auroral Procession

  • The instant speed of Reclaim with the card put in hand from Regrowth. The deck wants to recur its game enders, but just being able to play the same game-ender twice in one game makes the deck feel stronger than intended.

... LIST OF CHANGES: ...

Cut: Elvish Pioneer (Usefulness 3/5)

Add: Coastal Piracy (Usefulness 4/5)

  • Elvish Pioneer is good ramp that can freely attack for triggers, but it can stumble in the early turns.

  • Coastal Piracy is great redundancy for Edric and the deck wants draw more than ramp.

Cut: Spell Syphon (Usefulness 5/5)

Add: Concerted Defense (Usefulness 5/5)

  • Spell Syphon is a good counterspell for 2cmc. No complaints, but...

  • Concerted Defense is basically a second Spell Pierce with Edric on the field, with potential to be even better. 1cmc counterspells are just easier to hold up.

Cut: Thassa's Rebuff (Usefulness 5/5)

Add: Faerie Miscreant (Usefulness 3/5)

  • Thassa's Rebuff is a good counterspell for 2cmc. No complaints.

  • Faerie Miscreant added back in to bump the rogues number up slightly and because I feel like the deck has too few cheap evasive creatures and maybe even too many counterspells.

Cut: Willow Dryad (Usefulness 4/5)

Add: Mist-Cloaked Herald (Usefulness 5/5)

  • Willow Dryad has forestwalk which makes it unblockable in 90% of pods. It does cost green mana though, which is nicer than needing to spend blue mana.

  • Mist-Cloaked Herald is unblockable 100% of the time, and you can target any player with it.

Cuts:

Hidden Strings (Usefulness 1/5)

Reality Shift (Usefulness 3/5)

Spore Frog (Usefulness 4/5)

  • Hidden Strings is neat, but awkward to use as pseudo-ramp. It's a great card in this deck, but the deck just really doesn't need it.

  • Reality Shift is exiles removal for a creature and leaves a non-evasive creature behind. There's nothing wrong with this card. However, the deck doesn't typically have problems with individual creatures because it goes wide. This could be something more versatile.

  • Spore Frog is a good way to keep combat damage off of you, but the deck is fast enough that you almost want to welcome it. Spore Frog is just an annoying card in general, and might be too much if the rest of the deck is annoying too. If the deck cuts extra turns, it can lean hard into fog meta, but it doesn't need it when it's already running extra turns.

.

Adds:

Beast Within (Usefulness 3/5)

Desculpting Blast (Usefulness 5/5)

Teferi's Veil (Usefulness 4/5)

  • Beast Within is a high cost for this deck, but the versatility feels valuable.

  • Desculpting Blast bounces any nonland permanent which is useful for a deck with so many counterspells but so little hard removal. It can even give you an evasive creature.

  • Teferi's Veil helps the board dodge the biggest reason to hold up counterspells in the first place: Board wipes. However, it can also shut off Edric's ability for the rest of the table, which is a good thing on paper but also means more aggro is sent at you. Also it's less fun. Could just not attack with Edric, but still.
