EDH - Locust God - Wheeler Dealer

Commander / EDH Bracket 4 UR (Izzet)

Dr_Tosh

This deck is a high-power Izzet wheel engine built around The Locust God, where drawing cards is both the fuel and the payoff. The core plan is simple: force repeated hand resets, turn card draw into Insect tokens, and convert those tokens into overwhelming pressure or direct damage while disrupting opponents’ ability to stabilize.

Core Strategy

The deck uses a dense package of wheel effects (Windfall, Magus of the Wheel, Jace’s Archivist, Winds of Change, Wheel of Fate) combined with draw amplifiers like Alhammarret’s Archive and Teferi’s Ageless Insight to generate massive bursts of card draw. Each draw translates into flying Insect tokens, quickly flooding the board.

The tokens then become win conditions through: Purphoros, God of the Forge, Impact Tremors, and Witty Roastmaster

Combat pressure enhanced by Shared Animosity, Breath of Fury, and Throne of the God-Pharaoh Sustained card advantage via Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Reconnaissance Mission, and Curiosity Crafter

Chaos & Disruption

The deck leans into controlled chaos. Bounce spells (Cyclonic Rift, Into the Roil, Echoing Truth, Boomerang) reset problematic permanents and protect key pieces, while Narset, Parter of Veils plus wheels can lock opponents out of meaningful card draw. Teferi’s Puzzle Box and Words of Wind further destabilize board states and hands, making it difficult for opponents to execute clean game plans.

Mana Explosions & Big Turns

Explosive mana turns are enabled by Jeska’s Will, Mana Geyser, Battle Hymn, Seething Song, Birgi, God of Storytelling, Storm-Kiln Artist, and Mana Echoes, allowing the deck to chain wheels, interaction, and payoff spells in a single turn.

Closing the Game

While the deck can win through incremental pressure, it also includes a decisive closer in Underworld Breach, turning a full graveyard from wheels into a one-turn recursion engine that can immediately end the game. Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre serves a purely functional role as graveyard protection, preventing self-mill during extended wheel chains and allowing the deck to keep playing deep into the game.

The deck also contains an explosive combat finisher in Breath of Fury. When paired with any damage-based draw engine such as Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Reconnaissance Mission, or Curiosity Crafter, the Locust tokens generate repeated card draw and damage, allowing Breath of Fury to chain infinite combat steps and end the game immediately.

Interaction & Protection

A strong counterspell and protection suite (Fierce Guardianship, Deflecting Swat, Mana Drain, Counterspell, Stubborn Denial, Abjure) ensures key turns resolve while punishing opponents who try to race or disrupt the engine.

Playstyle Summary

High-power, non-cEDH Board-centric with explosive turns Disruptive and unpredictable Capable of both grindy wins and sudden game-ending turns.
