Yisan, the Wanderer Bard

Commander / EDH

nn2112

This deck is loosely based off of the Lab Maniacs version of this deck. I have made some changes to adjust to my meta.

The Premise

The deck comes out of nowhere. In the beginning we seem helpless as we surround ourselves with tiny mana dorks and elves, only to cheat in huge creatures later. Our main win condition is Craterhoof Behemoth, however, Shaman of Forgotten Ways can get us to victory much earlier.

The Commander

Yisan himself appears to be a simple, yet slow creature tutor general. And he is. Except all the untap shenanigans that MTG affords us, can get the ball rolling fast. His 3 toughness provides decent bulk to avoid removal, but the awesome thing is, Yisan tends to stay in play regardless as younr opponents turn their attention to the beasties Yisan calls out to.

1st Verse

For Yisan's first verse, I usually turn to Quirion Ranger. It lets us untap our commander. As you will see, we won't need too many lands, so bouncing one to hand isn't a big deal. Another good option for verse 1 is Wirewood Symbiote. I usualky only use this if Yisan was removed and I have had to start back over at verse 1.

2nd Verse

Much more depth here. I usually go for Priest of Titania for the ramp. However, if you don't get Quirion Ranger on verse 1, you can get Scryb Ranger on turn 2 which does the same thing. You can also get Yavimaya Scout, or Llanowar Scout to put extra lands into play.

3rd verse

I usually bring out Elvish Archdruid, but Reclaimation Sage is there too in case we need that artifact or enchantent removal. If you want to attempt an early win, you can always go for Shaman of Fogotten Ways. Only do this if you have the mana and power to trigger his formidable ability though!

4th verse and above

From here on out, play to the board. Hornet queen as your 7th verse is usually best, because you put 5 creatures on board which will mak your Craterhoof trigger even larger.

Keep in mind, your opponents cannot counter the creatures that Yisan puts into play. If they want to stop it, they have to remove Yisan some way, or counter the activated ability.

What Do We Lose To?

Anything that shuts off Activated abilities pretty much deals with our commander. The deck isn't super reluant on Yisan, but he is a means to an end.

This deck even manages to circumvent Iona, Shield of Emeria. Well, as long as Yisan was in play before she was played.

Elesh Norn pretty much handles most of our deck and put a vulnerable strain on Yisan.
