Exciting Cards in M19

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

The first core set since Magic Origins! Making this forum post for cards everyone's excited about from the upcoming Magic 2019, whether it's a new Commander, eternal-playable, a needed reprint, or pauper upgrade. I believe the whole set is out now!

Me? I'm ALL ABOUT THAT Resplendent Angel, even though I don't like lifegain decks. I love the new token-generating lifegain cards like that and Crested Sunmare, plus I'm a sucker for one-card value engines. And she makes Serra Angels! The FLAVOR!

Sarkhan, Fireblood has Very Cool Art.

AND NEW ELVES!! Thorn Lieutenant and Elvish Clancaller might bring elves back to standard, which might bring ME back to standard...

What are you all excited for?

Runic Armasaur is pretty cool,

As a commander player, the new Tezzeret is pretty sweet for artifact decks. Ajani is cool for Cat decks. Tibalt 2.0 has fantastic art. But overall I'm fairly dissapointed by the PWs, especially Vivien Reid. She sounds like a pretty sweet character from the flavor texts she's quoted in, but her card seems like Wizards just threw "Generic green effects" into a randomizer to make it.

Omniscience reprint is super exciting, even though I already own one. Same goes for Scapeshift and Crucible of Worlds, both of which I need.

A couple of lords for underrepresented tribes are fun (Spirits, Knights, Skeletons). Also, the art on Supreme Phantom is just fantastic.

On a non playability note, I'm really happy to see Phylactery Lich being reprinted. I started playing around M13, and this was one of the early rares I got that I always tried to make work even though I only owned like 10 total artifacts.

RazortoothMtg Yeah! I love the new tribal lords for underloved tribes, and I feel like both this set and Dominaria hearkened back to old-style art with cards like Supreme Phantom, Cleansing Nova, Suncleanser - they're not traditional art (which is still a shame IMO) but they're so clean and evocative. And they're gonna make great foils.

Also how could I forget to mention the uncommon Mare cycle? What a fun idea and the art for the white one, Shield Mare, is SO cool. I'm not even a horse person.

June 25, 2018 2:40 p.m.

I am really excited about the Elder Dragon cycle. Even though I wouldn't play most of them, I think their flavor is fantastic. Chromium, the Mutable in particular is awesome in just about every way. His art, flavor, and abilities are just incredible (at least from a commander players perspective).

I also am excited about Tezzeret, Artifice Master, and I already have a spot for Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip in my Superfriends EDH deck.

abby315: Supreme Phantom reminds me of Esper-Alara with all the little metal bits everywhere. And Cleansing Nova is one I forgot about. It's a great example of why I love core sets. It wouldn't work flavorfully on Ravnica, ixalan, or Amonkhet really, so it's only place to see print is a core set. And the lack of a specific plane on a lot of these cards lets them have much cleaner art, which I really enjoy. I'm just really excited for Core Sets to be back!

I didn't even notice Shield Mare's little bubble around him until now. Also, Surge Mare gives Breaching Hippocamp a second Horse Fish friend.

This may be a surprise to others, but Ajani's Last Stand is by far the most interesting card for me. I see it being very useful in my R/W pure enchantment modern deck. I need ways to make solid creatures with only enchantments. I also desperately need something to fill the 4-drop slot.

Cast Out, Flameshadow Conjuring, Furnace of Rath, Glory of Warfare, Martial Law, and Retreat to Emeria have been disappointing in my tests. Ivory Mask has been a powerful sideboard option while Pandemonium only replaces Warstorm Surge in very specific matchups. Worship was probably my best option, but it's outside my budget for this deck.

Now, I should have a decent followup to Vessel of Ephemera, Rise of the Hobgoblins, or Myth Realized. The threat of a 4/4 flyer should at least make decisions more uncomfortable for my opponent until I can get safe behind Sphere of Safety. With the engine fully built, Last Stand can be brought back with Starfield of Nyx, trigger Warstorm Surge to kill expendable tokens, sacrifice itself for another avatar and 4 more Warstorm damage, and be waiting in the grave to do it again next turn.

There was a lot of cool stuff in the deck but honestly, the only thing I really needed was Meteor Golem. Why? Let's just say my heart's gravitated towards Commander Anthology II, and it would be amazing as a second Spine of Ish Sah in Built from Scratch.

Besides that, I was tempted to build Lathliss, Dragon Queen (the new Sarkhan has sweet art), but found the idea to be not worth my while. Then there's Arcades, the Strategist. Not fond of generals that rely on themselves, nor do I like following the bandwagon.

Also, Nicol Bolas, the Arisen's art reminds me too much of a certain character when he laughed.

I'm digging Valiant Knight personally. Mainly because I want knights to be a powerhouse right now, and knights are my favorite tribe.

I am looking to build a nicol bolas control deck with both Bolases in standard right now. Spit Flame is one of the most powerful cards in this set.

While I'm personally not planning on getting any of the cards in this set, I think it's incredibly cool and I really love how they're printing lots of cards that make dragon tribal decks viable. And some of the reprints are really great and much-needed from a financial standpoint.

My favorites are:

My Jund and Esper EDH decks will love this. Vae is replacing Wasitora as soon as I can get it.

Not to forget another great hydra for hydra-tribal

I probably share this opinion with a lot of people, but my favorite card from M19 isn't found in the packs... sigh.

Playing wise? Resplendent Angel, Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants and Ajani's Pridemate. The cards would be very good for my lifelink tribal deck, Green + White = Lifelink and Angels.

Non-playing wise? Dryad Greenseeker. You've got to admit, the art does look like Groot, but with Nissa and Vivien eyes.

For me, Fraying Omnipotence was the card that caught my eye. I recently bought a rakdos smallpox list (Sadly Bloodghast-less, the store didn't have them) and I sort of want to add it. Unfortunately WotC realized nobody likes half their lands getting blown out and it won't be effective.

I'm a big fan of Satyr Enchanter and Regal Bloodlord for PDH.

June 27, 2018 6:27 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #20

Oh! I forgot one!

Desecrated Tomb is just great. I'm not sure of where it could be good, but I love the design. Whisper, Blood Liturgist could probably use it, Squee, the Immortal gets another value engine, and what I thought of first after seeing it was Delve, working similarly to Rakshasa Vizier. I'm sure there's an infinite combo somewhere as well.

June 27, 2018 7:11 p.m.

Arcades, the Strategist is my spirit animal :). But seriously, I can finally build that wall commander deck of my dreams.

Super excited for the Scapeshift as now I can hopefully get a cheaper copy for my Omnath, Locus of Rage EDH deck. Liliana's Contract is another card I am excited to try out in my Shadowborn Apostle deck.

Other cards I am intrigued by (mainly for commander): Meteor Golem, Stitcher's Supplier, Open the Graves, and Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma

I cannot choose a single card as my favorite from this set, but I am very fond of Resplendent Angel, as angels are my favorite creatures in this game, and this is one of the few cards in the that promotes angel tribal as a strategy, with another recent example being Lyra Dawnbringer.

I also very much like Arcane Encyclopedia, as it is a strictly better version of Jayemdae Tome. It is a very subtle card that will not draw much attention or have an immediate impact upon the game, but can be immensely beneficial over many turns.

June 28, 2018 10:27 p.m.

I'm pretty excited about Bigpox and Storm Crow.

Cleansing Nova seems interesting. I know that 5 is a bit above the curve for boardwipes, but it reminds me a lot of Austere Command. I think it could see play.

Sorcery-Speed Fling for looks pretty nice. No idea how useful it will actually be but hey, it's interesting.

Generic Demon is generic, but that's exactly why I like it. It does exactly the thing that demons do, and it does it well (hopefully).

Nexus of Fate... is this a strictly better Beacon of Tomorrows? I guess you can't target with it but... wow. I doubt that'll make any impact on the game, just surprised.

Entirely Normal Bookcase is a huge flavor win imo. Doesn't seem particularly powerful, but I'd love to put together something with this and Haunted Plate Mail and similar such things. Thematic haunted mansion deck sounds like some casual fun.

June 29, 2018 2:53 p.m.

Cleansing Nova is instantly in the top 3 for best white board wipes and likely in the top 5 of all.

June 29, 2018 3:09 p.m.

I should clarify that I mean for EDH rankings/purposes.

June 29, 2018 3:10 p.m.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor Yeah EDH is exactly where I expect to see a lot of that card, at least for a while. I don't know if it'll see any Standard play, but it seems good in Limited as well.

Sarkhan, Fireblood offers an excellent way to Ramp from 3-6. Playing Vaevictus or Palladia as early as turn 4 and even color fixes for them. This card is much better than I believe it’s getting credit for.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor, that's exactly how I felt when Hour of Revelation was spoiled, but I do like this one a lot too.

July 4, 2018 9:24 p.m.

back in the mirrodin-days i had a super fun casual-deck where i tried to obtain infinite turns with Magistrate's Scepter. Very excited this has been printed again, for the first time it has become Modern-legal so i immediately set out to make this into a new deck. Magistrate

I don't really like core sets. But still, I still like the cats in the set. Really cool artwork and playstyle. Totally thinking about building cat tribal in either commander or standard.

@RazortoothMtg - Squee + Paradox Engine + mana rocks + sac outlet would go infinite with Desecrated Tomb

Also potential to get infinite mana and just Banefire.

Daggerfella says... #35

I kinda like all the milling Patient Rebuilding, Psychic Corrosion, and Millstone!

It would be worth it with Reliquary Tower as some of these cause you to draw more and you might not want to discard. plus Omniscience will allow you to play just about anything at that point if ya pull it off.

and Chaos Wand will give you more versitility.

I might make a deck that uses all of these

July 9, 2018 12:37 p.m.

garruk3 says... #36

I'm excited for Elvish Clancaller, seems very useful in the modern elf deck that I am playing in currently. Leonin Warleader was fun to play against in pre-release, even though I might not ever use it. Patient Rebuilding and Psychic Corrosion is a huge combo that might bring mill back into standard.

Is anyone else here disappointed that there is no card of Ugin in this set, given that he is currently being featured in the story? I certainly was.

@DemonDragonJ - It's been stated by MaRo that Ugin was a late addition to the story.

Leonin Warleader . I pulled one at M19 prerelease and it was so fun to play in the deck I made. It can be used in many different decks such as token decks, lifegain decks, etc.

FSims81 says... #41

I was able to pull Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip during FNM on the 13th and was able to use him twice that night. He is a beast with very few immediate answers. That 4 cost 4/4 flying is nice, and then 3 turns later....end game!

July 17, 2018 11:16 a.m.

AgentGreen says... #42

FSims81 You're overestimating this Bolas's potential. Against control it's not going to stay down for very long (if it ever gets down)

Yes he can end games, but he has to get there and there's alot of ways to drop him before he gets there

July 17, 2018 12:13 p.m.

FSims81 says... #43

AgentGreen There are always ways to get rid of the pesky things you don't want to see on board, I was just mentioning the luck I had with him when I was able to pull and play him. I had 11 matches, two of which I was able to play the Bolas, and those two I won handily - getting to his ultimate both times. Granted that is a drafted deck, so playing someone's construct could turn out differently, but being able to have a Planeswalker Bolas and a back up Elder Dragon Bolas on board simultaneously helps keep it pesky while the opponent figures out the answer. He's fun

July 17, 2018 1:18 p.m.

MWorl91 says... #44

Bolas is quickly becoming the top card in Standard. Just being a 4/4 flyer that makes them discard is enough and the upside of being able to flip him if they don’t get rid of him makes him really dangerous.

July 22, 2018 9:44 a.m.

FSims81 says... #45

MWorl91 added to the fact that as a flip card, when he dies he goes into the graveyard as the 4/4 creature which means he is subject to a card like Macabre Waltz to bring him back, or that you can have him flipped and have a 4/4 flyer version on the battlefield at the same time.

July 25, 2018 12:53 p.m.

MilesCorvus says... #46

This is a personal thing I'm excited for, but the possibility of dredge in standard with some of the good graveyard play in M19 with Bone Dragon, Isareth the Awakener and Stitcher's Supplier and hopefully some more in the new Ravnica block

July 25, 2018 9:02 p.m.

Hexaflexagon says... #47

The Dredge mechanic will never come back to a Standard environment. Dredge-like things on the other hand...

Viashino Pyromancer is the best. get yours now while supplies last xdd

August 4, 2018 11:48 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #49

I feel that Bone Dragon's ability is too expensive (in terms of exiling creatures, not paying mana), and the fact that it enters the battlefield tapped when reanimated prevents it from ever being practical, unless its controller also has an Amulet of Vigor or a Seedborn Muse.

August 5, 2018 8:34 p.m.

Hexaflexagon says... #50

DemonDragonJ I think that Bone Dragon is one of those Mythics that were built for Limited, and I do agree with you that the activation cost a tad bit expensive. But the fact that you can reanimate a 5/4 flying multiple times without wasting a card is a big deal. Also, you can always do it at the end of the opponent's turn, a classic way of cheating the untap and SS stuff.
