Ajani's Last Stand

Enchantment

Whenever a creature or planeswalker you control dies, you may sacrifice Ajani's Last Stand. If you do, create a 4/4 white Avatar creature token with flying.

When a spell or ability an opponent controls causes you to discard this card, if you control a Plains, create a 4/4 white Avatar creature token with flying.

You could maybe play some Morbid cards like Skirsdag High Priest , but that's all I can really say. Most of the card choices here look solid to me. I'll list a few cards that you don't have in the maybeboard: Ajani's Last Stand , Ashes of the Abhorrent , Demon of Dark Schemes , Kaya's Guile , Dictate of Erebos , Dross Harvester , Massacre Girl , Ogre Slumlord .

Of those, I think Skirsdag High Priest , Dross Harvester , and Ogre Slumlord are the best/most fun.

Yesterday on Why does it still count …

The most common parallel is for cards like Anger of the Gods that exile things if they would die, and therefore don't trigger things like Ajani's Last Stand or cause effects like Morbid on Caravan Vigil to apply.

From the Gatherer page for Aven Mindcensor

  • For effects that check whether a player searched a library, searching the top four cards of that library counts as searching that library.

I appreciate this is an awkward question, but... why? Considering this is a replacement effect which replaces searching a library with a different action, why does looking at the top four cards still cause Ob Nixilis, Unshackled to trigger, or cause you to shuffle if you search with Grasping Current (which specifically only says to shuffle if you searched your library)?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that cards that give you the option to search a library as one of multiple searchable zones, and then shuffle the library only if you searched that library, didn't exist when Aven Mindcensor was first printed (they were popularised with the tutor/recur effects in recent Planeswalker decks). So when the Aven got reprinted I was expecting the wording to be changed, maybe to "when a player searches their library, they can only find cards from the top four cards of that library".

As it stands, this is the only card I can think of that just outright disobeys the rules in the wording in this way. I don't know.

What does it mean to search a library?

What does it mean to be happy?

What is life?

Hey, welcome to MTG! The deck you put together has some pretty good cards and some nice combos in it. If we trim it down a bit, we can create a more concise gameplan and route to winning.

Normally, in a lot of decks that you might see when browsing around, people will run 4 copies of cards. This is the maximum number of same-name cards allowed in a standard deck, except in the case of cards that have text that say otherwise. Normally, you should try running 4 copies of your best/favorite cards, just so you can count on drawing them more often.

That being said, Selesnya (Green/White) has some good cards in it that you've added here. You're pretty much a G/W knight deck, so I would consider running up to 4 copies of Knight of Autumn, Knight of Grace, & Conclave Cavalier. Trostani Discordant is good here as well -- if you like her, consider adding Emmara, Soul of the Accord for maximum benefit. Militia Bugler is actually great here as well, I'd recommend 4 copies of him too. History of Benalia is very good too. The dinosaurs are cool, but I probably wouldn't recommend running them here, as they don't synergize well with the rest of the deck. I would also consider taking out Ajani's Last Stand and Kamahl's Druidic Vow.

Some good instants, sorceries, and enchantments for you to consider are Conclave Tribunal, Charge, Make a Stand, and Flower / Flourish.

As far as packs to buy, a lot of your cards will probably come from Guilds of Ravnica or Dominaria. Both are great sets, but if you really want certain cards you should consider buying singles online or buying/trading for them at your local game store.

Good luck on the deck!

Haunting Spellcraft

Enchantment

At the beginning of your upkeep, return an enchantment from your graveyard to the battlefield.

~~~~~
Enchantment reanimator/control? With multiple copies of Haunting Spellcraft, it would have the resiliency required to hold it's own against Golgari, even in the grindiest of matchups. Might have problems with control if you can't get one resolved, tho.
But seriously, 4 History of Benalia, 4 Rite of Belzenlok, 3+ The Eldest Reborn, 3+ Conclave Tribunal, 3 Ajani's Last Stand, maybe some Profane Procession  Flips, a bunch of weird one-off enchantments....
Anyway, make another build-around for Competitive Standard, with the caveat that it has to belong to a non-Orzhov guild.
Make a Stand works as both a swing boost and a board wipe counter.
Ajani's Last Stand is also an interesting card as bodyguard makes turning it into a 4/4 flyer very easy.
I would also suggest maybe running Field of Ruin over some of your swamps, mana bases will be very greedy and you could possibly knock out an opponent's access to one of their colors while also keeping marshal just as castable.
This may be a surprise to others, but Ajani's Last Stand is by far the most interesting card for me. I see it being very useful in my R/W pure enchantment modern deck. I need ways to make solid creatures with only enchantments. I also desperately need something to fill the 4-drop slot.
Cast Out, Flameshadow Conjuring, Furnace of Rath, Glory of Warfare, Martial Law, and Retreat to Emeria have been disappointing in my tests. Ivory Mask has been a powerful sideboard option while Pandemonium only replaces Warstorm Surge in very specific matchups. Worship was probably my best option, but it's outside my budget for this deck.
Now, I should have a decent followup to Vessel of Ephemera, Rise of the Hobgoblins, or Myth Realized. The threat of a 4/4 flyer should at least make decisions more uncomfortable for my opponent until I can get safe behind Sphere of Safety. With the engine fully built, Last Stand can be brought back with Starfield of Nyx, trigger Warstorm Surge to kill expendable tokens, sacrifice itself for another avatar and 4 more Warstorm damage, and be waiting in the grave to do it again next turn.
