Prairie Fire|Phylath Aristocrats

Commander / EDH* Aristocrats RG (Gruul)

NivStormfront

Hello. Welcome to one of the weirdest Gruul decks you'll probably ever see. Yes, you read the title right, this is an Aristocrats list in Gruul.

This deck revolves around a combo made possible by Phylath, World Sculptor. It involves Phylaths ETB trigger, which makes plants equal to the number of basic lands you control. Here's how it works

Board State

Ashnod's Altar, Nim Deathmantle, Impact Tremors, 6 Basic Lands

Combo Line

(P=Phylath, AA=Ashnod's, ND=Nim Deathmantle)

  1. Play P, get 6 plant tokens

  2. Sac 2 tokens to AA for , then sac P to AA for .

  3. Pay ND's enter the graveyard trigger and reanimate P, getting 6 more plants

  4. Repeat the steps to infinity

Results

  • Infinite 0/1 Plant Tokens
  • Infinite Etb and Death triggers

So, as you can see, this combo can kill and entire table with impact tremors. If you didn't notice, however, it requires a pretty specific boardstate to pull off, so the deck needs a few alternate win cons.

This deck has a couple of alternate win cons. Firstly, we have substitute combos, which simply substitute for the main combo. Then, we have non-combo based win cons.

The first substitute combo involves a similar loop with altars and impact tremors, but this one is not infinite

Board State 6 Basic Lands, Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar, Impact Tremors.

Combo (AA=Ashnods, PA= Phyrexian, P=Phylath)

  1. Cast P, get 6 tokens

  2. Sac P and 1 token to PA for , and then 3 tokens to AA.

  3. Recast P for 8, get 6 tokens. Token count=8

  4. Sac P and 1 token to PA for , then 4 tokens to AA.

  5. Recast P for 10, get 6 more tokens. Token Count=9

  6. Sac P and 1 token to PA for , then 5 tokens to AA.

  7. Recast P for 12, get 6 more tokens. Token Count=9

  8. Sac P and 1 token to PA for , then 6 Tokens to AA.

  9. Recast P for 14, get 6 more tokens. Token Count=8

  10. Sac P and 1 token to PA for , then 7 Tokens to AA.

  11. Recast P for 16, get 6 more tokens.

End Result: - Total Etbs: 42

  • Total Deaths: 42

  • Total Impact Tremors Triggers: 42

So, as you can see, this combo can kill and entire table with impact tremors as long as they are at 42 life or below. It's also pretty set up heavy though.

The infinite combo that the deck centers around can be done with a few cards different, albeit less efficiently. You can switch Impact Tremors with any other ETB damage card like Purphorous, God of The Forge. You can also do the combo with Temur Sabertooth and instead of sacing Phylath you just bounce and recast him.

If the combo doesn't hit or it gets interrupted, we run some recursion, but usually we need to switch to another strategy. Thunderfoot Baloth turns our 0/1 plants into 2/3 tramplers, so with enough plants we can swing in for a combat win. We can also use our Landfall package to make a few of our plants extremely big with Scapeshift or with fetchlands and Crucible of Worlds.
