Commander: Nikya of the Old Ways

Maybeboard

This deck is built around Nikyas ability to double our mana. the downside of nikya is that she doesnt have much use for cards other then creatures, so thats all this deck runs. to get nikya out as soon as possible im running Zhur-Taa Druid,Beastcaller Savant, and Birds of Paradise, and a few others. Because of nikyas restriction i needed to find ways to remove and destroy annoying permanents, so i went with cards like Sunder Shaman, Thorn Mammoth, and Ulvenwald Tracker. there is alot of ways to generate card draw just with creatures, im running 8 different cards that let us draw, so keeping our hand full is easier then i thought it would be. We even have ways to tutor for the creatures we need, with guys like Fierce Empath, Protean Hulk, and Fauna Shaman.

With nikya in play all of our mana is doubled, but if we are able to get Nyxbloom Ancient out each land will tap for 4. with all the mana we will have it is easy to run out of things to cast from our hand in a turn, so i found it was important to find other ways to spend unused mana. Ant Queen, Jade Mage, and all of our hydras give us a ton of options to make sure we do not waist floating mana.

This deck will close out a game easily if we can get enough big monsters out with trample (Khenra Charioteer). not much needs to be said about Craterhoof Behemoth, he is one of my favourite cards in green, and he has won me quite a few games when he hits the battlefield. Vigor is also a notable card as he is a form of protection and he just makes our big beaters even bigger.

this deck was fun to build because it forced me to explore other options on finding ways to work around Nikyas downfall of not being able to cast anything other then creatures. any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

on a side note, a few cards i would like to mention in the deck are Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, and Magus of the Candelabra. These creatures let us un-tap lands as soon as we tap them. so with nikya, we can tap a land and float the 2 mana, un-tap the land and then re-tap it to float another 2, giving us 4 mana on one land. Magus of the Candelabra is the best option of the 3 because we can untap X lands and not just 1. Seedborn Muse + Yeva, Nature's Herald lets us untap our permanents each turn and cast creatures at instant speed. Seedborn Muse by itself is a great card in the deck because it lets us swing with everything during combat without the worry of leaving ourselves open.

thanks for checking out the deck.

This looks fun to play indeed. You have quite a lot of spot removal. Sweepers are hard to find in gruul, and even more so with Nykia. Apex Altisaur basically is a sweeper that often leaves behind a very big creature, and considering all your ramp, it isn't even that expensive.

Great deck. Nice and simple, yet very effective.

I would suggest Surrak, the Hunt Caller. He's slightly above average for stats and gives haste to a beater, which can speed up your clock. He can also give himself haste, which is rare in Green.

If there's one non-creature card worth putting in your deck, it might be Primal Surge. It might be a bit cheesy, but it's a game-winning spell most of the time. It might also take a bit of building around, but nothing too different from your current build. You can get there pretty quickly if you have Nikya, tap to add mana, then bounce her with Temur Sabertooth in order to cast your spell.

Thanks for the suggestions. Surrak is a great idea, im not sure who i would remove from the deck to add him in. I thought about exploring cards other then creatures, i have a few ways to get rid of nikya if i wanted to go this route. sabertooth like you mentioned, but you could also haveUlvenwald Tracker get one of the big guys to fight nikya. or you could have Apocalypse Hydra , and Flameblast Dragon kill nikya off as well.

Nylea's Forerunners seems a bit weak for your deck. You already have a few other trample givers and this one is overcosted. I could see that switch for Surrak if you want. Borborygmos also seems a bit lackluster.

Krosan Drover could be another good way to discount your creatures. Krosan Tusker is a 3 mana instant speed and uncounterable Divination that guarantees a land. It could be interesting to add in more "spell" creautres like that.

Haha that’s funny you say that, I had Krosan Tusker in the deck and I took him out for Nylea's Forerunner. I agree with you though I think I’ll swap them again.

Awesome Deck! For your consideration, Stalking Vengeance and Champion of Lambholt? When you have nothing but creatures either entering the field or dying, both might of use to you, or, at least, your sideboard lol Keep it up!

I always pictured Champion of Lambholt mainly in a token deck, but with Ant Queen or Jade Mage my board would be unblockable pretty quick. I never realized the similarities between Zhur-Taa Druid and Klothys, God of Destiny.. that’s a change I will make for sure. Thanks
