Carthalion's Careening Combats

Commander / EDH RGW (Naya)

ThoreaulyRed

So I love Jared Carthalion as a card, and wanted to make a deck around him, but I had a number of problems, chiefly that the main way to play him is with Stuffy Doll effects and mass damage. I already had a Mardu deck like that, lead by Zurgo. Then I thought fight effects, but I realized I kind of hate them, and my Neyith deck is like that. I didn't want to do cheating big creatures, as I have like two Naya decks that do that, and more Jund. What ever should I do? I settled on a combat matters deck, with an emphasis on forced blocks and forced attacks, to distinguish from my Saskia deck.

There's a number of themes here: 1) Monarch. You'll want to be it, and there's a lot of cards that give it to you. But you should be able to get it by attacking, because... 2) Attacking matters. There's a lot of attack triggers here. 3) Forced combat: Marisi, Fumiko, Basandra, all work to force attacks, and you'll be prepared for this because... 4) Defense matters: Johan and Dean of Harmony (or whatever Plargg's backside is) give pseudo-vigilance, but if you don't have them, you have three creatures that can block 2+ creatures apiece, and Goblin Snowman can survive any block. There's also some defensive effects, like Caltrops, which is a neat way to trigger your 3 Enrage critters when attacking, plus the bonus to Jared and Hungering Hydra. Radiant Kavu can help against Dimir, Baton of Morale is handy on defense, and Maze if Ith serves double duty for offense and defense. 5) Dice rolling: another way I sought to differentiate this from my other Boros or Gruul-including decks. Many of these coincide with point 2. 6) Recursion: you have some of it. Genesis, Timeless Witness, Timeless Dragon, Sun Titan, Wrenn's ultimate. You don't have a ton, so be careful. 7) Fight effects: I dislike them, but there's some in here. Neyith, Arena, Brawl (which is a hilarious card), Arni Slays the Troll. 8) How you'll draw cards: there's little strict card draw, but there's some, chiefly defensive. Fey Steed, Garruk's Uprising, Battle Mammoth, Neyith, Ripjaw Raptor, and, of course, being (and staying) the Monarch.
