OUT: Banefire IN: In Garruk's Wake

Did a few practice games and one thing I noticed is that whenever I scryed or drew Banefire, I was getting annoyed at it or shipping it to the bottom. I think the issue is that it's single-target and honestly just not an interesting card to have. Single-target spells normally have to be quite spectactular or useful in ways other than flatout winning the game, and unfortunately Banefire just isn't either of those things. In favour I'm taking Garruk's Wake; nice board wipe and useful even if there are just one or two creatures that I don't want on the board, and hitting planeswalkers is just another nice touch that makes me want to use it over Plague Winds

Cut Temple of the False God for Ancient Tomb. An obvious replacement.

Cut Dragon Throne of Tarkir for Trinisphere. I played a game where an opponent played it and it fucked everyone in my pod except me. I didn't care about paying 3 for safekeeper since my deck makes a shitload of mana, so I'm testing this out as a hate option. Trying to find a cut to put Kavu Lair back in since card draw is extremely powerful in this deck.

10th Update, embracing the meme life

reversemermaid, 6 years ago

-Aetherflux Reservoir
-Past in Flamesfoil
-Thoughtseize

+Mnemonic Betrayal
+Thousand-Year Storm
+Remand

Let's just first deal with the real swap here, PiF for Meme Betrayal. MB is pretty much a second copy of Yawgmoth's Will and even though it doesn't let you recycle your own cards the same way YawgWin does it's still a 1 card wincon that doesn't care if your own YawgWin gets binned. The card is disgusting (and maybe a bit meta-dependant, but if anyone is playing anything good then MB over PiF)

Reservoir is out for Thousand-Year Storm because the lines are funny, read about them here https://www.reddit.com/r/CompetitiveEDH/comments/9o6li8/bonus_roundthousandyear_storm_lines/
If you can't handle the spice, keep playing Reservoir. Thoughtseize for Remand is a concession to the 1KYS lines, Remand with Timetwister allows for a second way to make infinite whatevers if something happens to Unsubstantiate.

Updates

Eudaemoniac, 6 years ago

Snap and Eerie Interlude were added as ways to reset the chosen player on Stuffy Doll while also providing different types of versatility--removal and protection, respectively.

Thousand-Year Storm replaced Swarm Intelligence because it is better at enabling game-winning turns while costing one less mana to cast, without too big of a downside.

Added Skarrgan Pit-Skulk

Ryuujin_Sukai, 6 years ago

Added a few items I came across that just needed to be in here somehow. Not quite sure just yet though. Lost Auramancers Academy Rector Replenish Entomb These are obviously for me to find a way to cheat enchantments of high cost into play like Omniscience.

Still undefeated

CHANGES TO THE MAINBOARD: Just some quick fixes I could make right now with what I have on hand.

  • Swapped Harrow for Demonic Tutor I took out Harrow because my basic land count is getting rapidly lower with the addition of some cool newer lands. Also, I have other land tutor cards at either better costs and or rates. sac a land for 2 basics isnt a worthwhile investment anymore, but Demonic Tutor 1B tutor anything is!

CHANGES TO THE MAYBEBOARD: I added new cards to the Maybeboard. These new cards are card I plan to add to the deck, but currently am look for trades for or going to buy once I have the money. I already know what they'll be replacing too.

  • I will replace Forest with Dryad Arbor Because its a Forest that doubles a 1/1 for zero.

  • I will replace card:Sunken Hallow with Breeding Pool Because card:Sunken Hallow need a two or more basic lands to enter untapped and that's become less and less likely to happen. Also, I only have one Simic duel land and a majority of Dimir Duel lands so it may be time to start evening it out. Finally, Breeding Pool will most likely see a reprint in RAVNICA ALLEGIANCE.

  • I will replace Shriekmaw with Baleful Strix In my playgroup almost every player plays black so Shriekmaw has been a dead card for a long time. I wont be completely removing him instead he'll move to the sideboard. But Baleful Strix is a flying, deathtouch, and draw a card is simply gorgeous!

  • I will replace Vivien Reid with Kiora, Master of the Depths Because Vivien Reid puts card to the bottom of the deck instead of graveyard, I already have enough enchantment/artifact hate, and I doubt I'll be allowed to get to the ultimate. However, Kiora, Master of the Depths allows me to untap a land(of which i have many that produce 2 mana) and a creature which could be very powerful. I also get to drop cards into the graveyard. and if I'm allowed to Ultimate. Well, GG.

update to deck

OThatSean, 6 years ago

I took out the siege gang guy for Legion Loyalist. I thought the siege guy gang was never going to be hard cast and relying on comboing it out was impractical. Plus Legion Loyalist giving the whole team first strike is awesome against humans... I think, haven't played it but I guess so. And the trample works well with Rablemaster and he is the real star of the show here.

Second place!

ROUROU, 6 years ago

Hi all! Today payed this deck at Tuesday Night Magic at a gaming store. Managed to beat 3 guys and ended up second! There are many " red-deck-wins " so my side deck saved me arse a couple of times.

Artifacts

WillowtheCouncil, 6 years ago

Dreamstone Hedron is awful. The ramp is a lot, sure, but it's 6 mana and it's colorless ramp. Drawing 3 cards is nice, buuut I'd rather just play my damn creatures on time.

-Dreamstone, +Chromatic Lantern

Sphere is OK, but I'd rather have the ramp and fixing than a card draw. I don't have a lot of instant and sorcery spells, so I'm usually not desperately sac'ing cards to find answers, and since cards are mana intensive I'll keep what I can.

-Commander's Sphere, +Coalition Relic

-Painful Truths, since I'm trading that card advantage for this one, +Helm of the Host. Helm synergizes really well with a lot of dragons with effects that trigger off dragons attacking.

That's probably okay.

Big changes!

Olive_pdx, 6 years ago

I decided to try a different approach for this deck. It was a bit slow. I played it a couple of times partway through the changes and I rally liked it! Let me know what you think

Land Upgrades Ideas

WillowtheCouncil, 6 years ago

Guildmages' Forum is a decent filter land that can also buff creatures. Better than other filter lands.

Journey to Eternity  Flip is the best flip-land for this deck. It provides repeatable reanimation, and any color of mana.

Unclaimed Territory is a must-have.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth replaces a swamp and helps with black mana.

Exotic Orchard is really good.

Other filterlands like Painted Bluffs and Shimmering Grotto and Unknown Shores are good.

Additionally, the ETB 5 color lands aren't amazing because of how slow they are, but a single Rupture Spire won't lose too much momentum.

The most important part is to try and have more useful, untapped lands.

Squirrel Farm and co.

Leptys, 6 years ago

Adds: Earthcraft, Squirrel Nest, Blasting Station, Assassin's Trophy, Sylvan Scrying, Snow-Covered Plains, Forest

Cuts: Aetherflux Reservoir, Autumn's Veil, Blood Artist, Deglamer, Compost, Bountiful Promenade, City of Brass

Aetherflux didn't fail to disappoint in the list, mainly because winning with it requires the same lines as Angel's Grace + Ad Nauseam + Sickening Dreams would. The deck needs a relatively simple combo as a backup line that doesn't utilize the grave as much, and Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest is more or less the best thing Abzan colors have to offer. I also replaced Blood Artist with Blasting Station to have a way to win with Squirrelcraft on the spot if I have it available, or use it as a combo piece for the Animate Dead + Leonin Relic-Warder combo just like Artist.

Other than that, just small adjustments to the mana-base to turn on Earthcraft more consistently, as well as allowing for more Boseiju tutoring with Sylvan Scrying. Assassin's Trophy replaces Deglamer for less shuffling disruption, but the downside of giving an opponent a basic untapped is negated after they make a topdeck tutor which is good.
