Mother of Runes

Creature — Human Cleric

: Target creature you control gains protection from the colour of your choice until end of turn. ((Remember the acronym debt.) The targeted creature can't be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by anything of the chosen colour. Anything of the chosen colour attached to that creature immediately falls off.)

Kaalia will always be one of my favorite commanders. That first batch of commander decks were special.

This is a really neat shell. I like your use of niche white control spells like Abeyance and Orim's Chant. Would something like Conqueror's Flail be useful here?

I really like your use of Necrodominance and Necropotence. Is this speeding up your wins?

A playset of cards from my list that I think would be excellent here:

Eiganjo Castle kaalia protection

Arena of Glory best haste enabler

Chance for Glory wins games

Cataclysm the math is on your side

Sneak Attack kaalia #2

Cut all the creatures that don't fit the tribes. Keep Mother of Runes. The rest are just good stuff.

I would recommend a higher land count, and perhaps a few more cheap ramp cards. Opening hands being reliable makes the deck a lot more fun. Also just my style, but white has a ton of cards that exile target non land permanent which can target things not cast, or cast when you are not ready unlike counterspells. like Oblivion Ring. I never see people use removal to get back permanents.

I like the heavy blink theme though, you build more budget in this deck which I appreciate. Intrepid Hero is a great reusable removal, same with Steel Hellkite. Mother of Runes is a budget staple, and Mirror Entity is a finisher for any combat deck with white.

You need Hammer of Nazahn, Grafted Exoskeleton, Shadowspear and Open the Armory. Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, and Mox Opal if possible.

Cuts:

Adaptive Automaton (clunky, what are you choosing??)

Benalish Marshal (too mana intensive for so little impact)

Bladegraft Aspirant (same)

Burnished Hart (too slow)

Chief of the Foundry (too much mana for so little impact)

Eivor, Battle-Ready (way too expensive)

Kassandra, Eagle Bearer (not really cost efficient since you don't have the spear)

Militia Bugler (not good)

Mother of Runes -> Giver of Runes

Novice Knight (not good)

Thraben Inspector (not really refined for your game plan)

Darksteel Plate -> Mithril Coat

Explorer's Scope (not good)

Haunted Plate Mail (not good)

Ring of Thune (not good)

Sword of Hours (not good)

Sword of the Paruns (not very good)

Hieromancer's Cage -> Borrowed Time

Pacifism (not good)

Stasis Snare -> Grasp of Fate

Council's Judgment (this card sucks)

Visions of Ruin -> Vandalblast

I do like the Excalibur a lot! It alone can be lethal with our commander. The challenge comes down to finding a way to cheat it into play. Cheating casting costs of our equipments seems more difficult than cheating equip costs. It helps a lot that our equipments are artifacts, which fits the historic category.

Haystack is nice. Reminds me of Mother of Runes, but cannot protect itself or provide evasion. Keep in mind that it cannot target our creatures that have protection from white since it’s considered a white artifact, and with it not being a creature, it cannot be equipped. There is the advantage of having the ability to use it the same turn it comes out. I can see a common play pattern of playing Haystack prior to playing the threat, and leaving up the additional two mana of course. I know we were also trying to keep our artifact count down and I am curious what we would take out for it. I do like that it can make one of our creatures dodge practically any board wipe. Phasing has some advantages over hexproof, indestructible, and color protection. Timing can be a bit of a challenge not having our threat return to defend us until our next untap rather than the end of the turn we use the Haystack. Not a fan of having to keep up mana up when there’s things like Giver of Runes, which can activate for free (and also did not currently make the deck). I would probably recommend adding Haystack if your playgroup is removal heavy, otherwise it’s a bit too defensive to speed up our game plan of taking out our opponents. I am personally more of a fan of spells/abilities that I can use that can protect our commander without interrupting a lethal attack, like a new card I pulled yesterday Flare of Fortitude

Deck looks really fun, and as somebody who runs a mono white deck a lot, this list looks awesome : )

I have a few suggestions, just because you were asking about making this as competitive as possible.

You could probably get away with running more utility lands, stuff like War Room or Roadside Reliquary are nice when you just need to draw something, and I like Blast Zone a ton because it's always something you can sink some mana into and when it goes off it's amazing. Treasure Vault can be kinda similar where you can sac a little efficiency and get an amazing turn.

Dowsing Dagger  Flip is a great equip and you have lots of attacking and evasive creatures, so might be awesome.

Concerted Effort could be an absolute bomb, giving all your guys double strike, flying, or protection. Effort and Mother of Runes are so great together.

For max cometitiveness, I think about a Phyrexian Dreadnought and Tocatli Honor Guard or Hushwing Gryff package, just because dreadnaught is such a crazy toxic target, and honor guard can even be tutored off Pyre of Heroes and Mother of Runes or Alaborn Zealot. Zealot also works well with protection because you can pro her from her own destruction, and really, worst case she is just a 1mana protection from attacks. It's a convoluted combo for sure, and I'd only do it because I have a few dreadnaught copies from back in the day, he is way too expensive now : ) Also, things like Hushbringer can just be great stax pieces on their own.

Duelist's Heritage might work well with toxic

And I really like Crashing Drawbridge in any attack focused deck, just for the haste, but sometimes to have a big butt blocker too.

Niko9 on Choosing Equipment-based Card Draw in …

I think you hit the main ones for card advantage, and I really like Mask of Memory because you are running Karmic Guide and Bruna, the Fading Light  Meld and you can sometimes pitch a big creature to get reanimated. I have a Bruna deck and it's very fun to reanimate in mono white : )

Other equips you might consider in general are: Dowsing Dagger  Flip is great with flyers, and pays back 3 of it's 4 mana often on the turn it comes down.

Hedgewitch's Mask I really like this one, especially with flying creatures to limit who can block them even more.

Explorer's Scope might just be my all time favorite equip, but it might just be me : ) Most often it is just a more efficient Wayfarer's Bauble and even if it bricks, it's surprisingly valuable to know your next draw and plan your plays before you draw.

And one I really like in angels is Concerted Effort It can turn Mother of Runes into boardwipe protection, or give your whole team double strike, or just make your support creatures flyers.

Oh, and also, equip decks can have a lot of fun with Leonin Shikari that can give all creatures Lightning Greaves or add on more Sword of Fire and Ice triggers, more Sword of the Animist triggers, it's always pretty good.

How has Dolmen Gate been playing for you? Specifically, does your meta have a lot of fliers? On the one hand, if they don't have a lot of fliers, given your commander and pretty much all your creatures have flying, is gate necessary? And if they do have a lot of fliers, how impactful is mudslide? Similar question for Bedlam.

Props for running Armageddon and Rebuff the wicked! At the risk of sounding like a broken record, given your deck is commander reliant, Deflecting Swat? Or perhaps even a Flawless Maneuver? Mithril Coat is also a good protection option that is reputable and easy to cast.

Have you thought of potentially swapping out Footfall Crater for Hall of the Bandit Lord? While hall can't be used the same turn, and does cost life, it is a haste outlet that is less likely to get you 2 for 1ed, and it takes a land slot, freeing another slot for whatever you need, probably draw. Unless you don't focus too much on draw given you're game plan is just to destroy them quick and easy with overwhelming cheating into play advantage.

How has Insidious Dreams been and what to do you tutor for? I've personally never liked it given that discard is additional cost to cast and you don't even get them into your hand. Especially given this is a combo deck and you are already low on draw, what exactly is the gameplan with it? Perhaps I'm missing something?

Thoughts on swapping out Strionic resonator for Isshin, Two Heavens as One? Resonator costs less, is less likely to be removed, and is easier to cast but requires you to have mana open. Isshin costs more mana, is harder to cast and easier to remove but doesn't require additional mana.

Mother of Runes - Protection

While I adore expedition map, have you thought of swapping it out for another ramp piece? You have about 5 pieces of ramp. Swapping map for Mind Stone or another 2cmc ramp spell can help you bring your commander out earlier. Of course mind stone's draw is nice too.

I'm sure you've went through most of these suggestions as you originally made the deck given your expertise in EDH but I would love to rack your brain regarding your thought process. Let me know what you think
