Thread of sadness ;_;

So you sold your playset of Goblin Rabblemaster just before it spiked? I feel with you!

This thread is about letting out all the mistakes that you have made, by buying and selling cards. Lets all cry together! It's not healthy not to talk about it...

I'll start: I was just about to buy 4 Eidolon of the Great Revel for 1$ each. But for some reason, I forgot about them. Now they are 7 dollars each..... ;_;

Ok, it might not be that bad, but still!!

Tell me your mistakes!

When I wasn't really into Magic a few years back, I sold a Future Sight Tarmogoyf for its TCG mid price... Of $85...

Because I didn't really care for it at the time (before it spiked), I gave away a Goblin Rabblemaster. I didn't want it and a friend was building up his collection. Worst part was he traded it away before it spiked as well, so not even a friend of mine benefited from my actions.

On the other hand, I did sell True-Name Nemesis for $43 before it dropped.

November 15, 2014 1:44 p.m.

Traded away a playset Xenagos, the Reveler when he was a mere $7.

Opted to not trade Mogis, God of Slaughter for 2x Courser of Kruphix when BOTG first came out.

Such sad.

I've never really made terrible trades other than get a few Chandra, Pyromaster when she was like $16. On the other hand, I made off with my True-Name Nemesis for 3x Steam Vents + 2x Watery Grave, so I'm pretty happy with it.

I told my friend who plays green to buy as many Courser of Kruphix as he could on pre-release. He didn't believe me. I'm never going to let him live it down.

I think I've mentioned this before but these threads are always fun.

When I first started my first pack contained a Foil Godless Shrine I was like PFFT why would this be worth money, and sold it to some guy who offered me $15 for it.

I've always been a stickler for looking up prices so I haven't really had any bad trades....but there's a guy in my playgroup that traded me a Blood Crypt for about .50 in commons, and a Temple of Enlightenment for a Reliquary Tower.

I guess there was the one time I traded a pain land from M15 to someone for a couple of derpy rares. Sad times.

I had been playing Magic and drafting M14 for a couple weeks then, and was looking for cards to improve my Gruul deck (4x Ruination Wurm, 4x Zhur-Taa Druid, etc.) at FNM. Lo and behold, I found a Garruk, Caller of Beasts in someone's trade binder. Of course, he was $30 and I had nothing to trade for it.

Later some guy (a regular and former employee of the store) came up to me and handed me a box of cards. I can't remember what was in it, but I do remember a Crucible of Worlds, so it was probably great. It turned out that he was either moving or quitting Magic. I only intended to play Standard or Draft at the time (because that was all I knew).

So I turned right around a traded a box of good cards that I barely looked through for a Garruk, Caller of Beasts, whose price fell soon I think. The guy who gave the cards to me was kind of hurt as well.

Whee.

Luckily I never made any large mistakes. The biggest one I ever did was trading an FtV Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth when it was $20 and some 10 dollar card for a Foil Seedborn Muse. Urborg then spiked to 35~40 for modern season, then got reprinted and sunk like a rock, so its about even today.

Does trading a Geist of Saint Traft for crap cards when it was $10 count?

I traded an Elspeth for a bunch of pieces to Mono Black Aggro, which I didn't end up building and i now need two elspeth. Also she is now 30 dollars instead of 20. My friend just traded me a played condition Griselbrand for some five dollar rare (i already forgot which) just this past week. He fully knew the price of the card and hasn't been able to trade it away, and he needed the other card for his deck. So that was cool.

I did the same exact thing, miracleHat.

When I was playing and didn't understand value, I traded a Snapcaster Mage for 2x Frontline Medic and 2x Legion Loyalist.

Yea I sold my pair of Eidolon of the Great Revel for like $2 each. I also spent $10 on Gideon, Champion of Justice because I pulled one and wanted to run two in a deck. NoPantsParade ouch thats a bad one.

Where do I even begin to tell you all the tragic tales of my woeful MTG trading history. I've traded so many cards before they've spiked - Things that were around $10 at the time like Misty Rainforest or Karn Liberated only to see them skyrocket in price. On the plus side, it's always to friends. On the minus side, I get to relive the painful memories of an ill-thought-out trade every time I see the cards hit the table, usually coupled with knowing, smug eye contact. The sting is real.

I could go on into deeper, darker stories of MTG regret but it's far too painful. This has helped unburden me a tiny bit & for that I am thankful.

Forkbeard, we need to go deeper. Release the pain! :D

Some of these are really bad. It actually hurts just by reading them.

Fuggit, I need more catharsis.

I also have a gift for trading something days before a reprint is announced. For example, I recall trading Survival of the Fittest for a Future Sight Akroma's Memorial. An M13 AM reprint was announced later that very week. That was a dark day my friends.

I put on a brave face most days with a mantra of "I regret nothing"...But the truth is that I am riddled with regret.

November 15, 2014 5:46 p.m.

After the KTK pre-release, traded a siege rhino and wingmate roc for an end hostilities and butcher of the horde. Whoops.

Traded a foil Thoughtseize for an Aven Mindcensor, Phyrexian Obliterator and Mother of Runes. About even trade value at the time, less than a week later, Thoughtseize had jumped to 75. It's settled back to about 71 now. Oops.

I saved that trade in my MTG Familiar App so that it is always there to remind me. Legacy/Modern staples in foil are rarely going to go anywhere but up...

Oh, I see that this thread is going balls deep. Ok then... A little later after the geist scene, I was at the avacyn restored prerelease, and it was my first one. I was really stoked because I got an Entreat the Angels! Me being me, after the tourney (i got ~10th place), I traded the entreat for a regular Bonfire of the Damned. For 1 week, it was the best deal of my life, 2 1/4 years later...

Must I go deeper then that? I had actually forgotten about that trade, but my brother reminded me about it as a playful joke (haha).

I remember another reallsy sad thing.....

When I was younger, I really wanted a playset of Goblin Guide. But I was a really big idiot, and thought they were too expensive, 6$..... Later on, I wanted to buy them again.... Now they had spiked to 9$, which was way too expensive for me.... Now, later I really needed them for a modern burn deck.... Now they were 17..... ;_;

November 16, 2014 3:28 a.m.

NorthernRaven oh my god that hurt to read. I didn't need Goblin Guides until they were like twenty bucks each.

Six dollars? Shit, I wish they were that much now.

November 16, 2014 9:27 a.m.

I had a Bazaar of Baghdad when it was worth $15, don't even remember what I traded it for.I think I may have traded 5 or so Dual lands for an Argivian Archaeologist - this was back when Duals were about $12 each. Top that.

November 16, 2014 10:03 p.m.

Some other trades I witnessed, that weren't my cards -

My friend got somebodies Mox Emerald for two revised Shivan Dragon's. And my other friend asked me to trade his Time Walk for 4 Nightmare's.
I'm not joking about these at all. This was around Revised era, basically when me and my friends started playing.

November 16, 2014 11:20 p.m.

My girlfriend and I had no idea what magic was but her uncle gave us a bunch of cards at first I thought it was stupid but apparently people played at school so why not play with them (this was in highschool) well eventually I started to love the game and spent some money on some planeswalkers and whatnot that would go good in my deck. Well long story short one night we are at our lgs with all of our new hs friends and we decide to go see how much she could get for them, well long story short they offered her 150$ and that sounded like the greatest deal in the world for someone who didnt know value well we took the offer and afterwards she asked them why they gave her so much and they said she had some Wasteland and some Tropical Island not including the amazing other stuff that i dont even remember :( but after getting in the car and looking up some prices I wouldnt tell her how much money she just lost XD

These stories are all pretty weak. My worst "trade" was definitely when I quit playing the first time and sold what I could then gave away everything else to my friend, which was mostly commons and uncommons... Which doesn't seem that bad until I tell you I gave him about 30 wastelands. Lulz.

November 17, 2014 1:44 a.m.

A friend of mine really derped out. She traded a mint Liliana of the Veil and a Snapcaster Mage in near mint away from some Theros rares worth maybe $40 "because they were out of rotation and she was't using them for anything". I didn't have the heart to tell her.

I used to have playsets of original Polluted Deltas, Temple Gardens, Godless Shrines, Breeding Pools, Watery Graves, Steam Vents, and Overgrown Tombs. I traded the Polluted Deltas for some Wastelands and Wooded Foothills. I have no idea what I traded away my shocks for.

Polluted Delta then shot up well past $100 and my Wastelands sat at $40 for the longest time. We won't even go into how much I lost with my shocklands.

November 17, 2014 4:10 p.m.

When foil Nissa was $30, I traded it for Snapcaster Mage and Abrupt Decay. Next day, she spiked up to $90.

Welp.

I started playing when RTR was released. At the opening week of RTR, I wanted to buy 4x Mox Opal for $11 each but friends told me it just rotated out and I can't use them in any of my standard decks. Next thing you know they're $60 a piece T_T

vishnarg says... #31

For me, probably buying a bunch of weird standard cards from my LGS for way too much, like $4 Necrotic Ooze and $4 Venser's Journal way back when I started playing.

Probably my worst ever transaction was trading a Celestial Colonnade promo for a Restoration Angel because some guy really wanted one before the tournament started. I also traded a foil Birthing Pod that I pulled for a playset of Lord of the Unreal. I was so naive then.

November 18, 2014 12:54 p.m.

I started playing right after Timespiral was released, but the most booster packs that I ever bought were from Future Sight. No, I never pulled a goyf, but I did end up trading away Dryad Arbors and a Horizon Canopy for absolute junk now.

On another note, when a new set comes out my shop sells foil commons for $0.50 and I managed to be the first one to look through them and find the only Treasure Cruise! Also I was able to trade MonoBlackDevotion stuff to a kid a year ago for his (then $9) Goblin Guides and Deathrite Shamans among other things. You lose some then win some when you get into magic it seems!

November 18, 2014 2:19 p.m.

I'm going to make you all feel a lot better.

Sold my beta playsets of Beta duals when I was in college for $75 a land. Sold my moxen at around $180 a piece and a lotus for $360, prettysure it was $360, might have been more. My logic? I was lucky the game made it that far and I hadn't played in years, I was never going to use those cards again.

Yet here I am.

Get on my level.

November 18, 2014 2:25 p.m.

Redundancy is redundant.

November 18, 2014 2:26 p.m.

I pulled a Nissa, Worldwaker at an M15 draft my buddy put on. I think she was around $16 or so at the time? Anyway, a month or two later I just happened to check the price on TCG and thought ".... I must be on foil.." Nope, she was totally in that $40 range. I meant to sell her when I saw that but never actually got around to putting her on my list.. There's twenty bucks I wont ever see again. I just posted her probably three days ago now.

Is a good deal I found probably not welcomed to share here? haha.

Big lols to that, Forkbeard

I've only been playing since the Innistrad block so I don't have a ton of these stories, but I'm still hurting from Hero's Downfall.

On release day, Hero's Downfall was $3. "What a good card, I should pick those up for all my black EDH decks," I thought. "But why rush? I'll get them after the weekend, on Monday!"

Monday rolls around and they've jumped up to $15 :'(

November 18, 2014 7:45 p.m.

Maybe not a bad trade per se but I pulled a Sorin Markov at the M12 pre release, then traded it afterwards for a Gideon Jura because "oh shit I want Gideon and I'll never use Sorin for anything." Two months later, I was building Rakdos burn and I kicked myself majorly for trading that Sorin. I still have that Gideon by the way. xD

I don't even like to admit it but... i started collecting as a young kid, about 7 years old. Between hockey cards and mtg I spent every penny I earned and became a pretty good trader in the neighborhood. At about 14 years old the few mtg friends I had slowly grew out of the hobby and my cards were packed away into the closest. Fast forward to a few years ago and I bought a house and brought all my old stuff from my parents. Found my magic cards while unpacking and my interest was sparked again and I bought about 20 packs of Avacyn Restored shortly after. I quickly lost interest again with nobody to play with so I brought my cards into a local sports card shop hoping to get a $75 box of hockey cards in trade. The shop owner knew nothing about them and there were way too many to go through even in a full day and without realizing mtg was worth anything I offered the two 3 row card boxes of mtg cards for $25 store credit. I know I had some Beta, alot of revised and unlimited, lots of mirage ice age and legends and a bunch of other random mid-late 90's cards. I know I had some Necropotence, Dark Ritual, Plateau I know for sure and probably other duals, Griselbrand and one of the good angels from the Avacyn i bought and the one that hurts the most, a white border Time Walk. Now almost 3 years later I stumbled upon a FNM at a sports card shop by my work while stopping in to get some baseball packs and I've been addicted again ever since (a week before ktk pre-release). That's my terrible story!
