Lord of the Unreal

Creature — Human Wizard

Illusion creatures you control get +1/+1 and have hexproof.

I'm honestly not too sure about Teleportal... my only valid targets are Krovikan Mist which has flying anyway and Lord of the Unreal (honestly have grown frustrated with Illusory Angel and thats why its in my SB)... the overload cost is tempting though.

I use or at least in other decks have used Fire / Ice as a flex card that can either be nice removal to snipe threats like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer/Orcish Bowmasters or just tap down a would-be blocker/attacker or land plus cantrip.

I will playtest with it though... I own a bunch so why not give it a try?

First let me begin by asking you to read Grand Architect third skill. Tapping is also not "targetting" so it does not trigger the illusion sack. Out of the 24 available creatures (excluding artifacts) not one is above a 3 cast (mostly 1s and 2s) so it is not uncommon to field a creature every turn if not two, making mana req fairly low, so by turn 4-5 that's a possible 8+ mana (no less than 6+ in most cases) to field an artifact. On a bad draw you are generally sitting behind a wall of hex proof guys (thank you Lord of the Unreal + Phantasmal Image) waiting for GA, on a good one you field two 6-7 cost artifacts by turn 5 with the potential to copy them the same turn essentially making them hex proof on summon. Last I checked any of the artifacts except maybe Contagion Engine is pretty rude turn 4 lol, especially if your holding counter spells for field wide return to hand cards like Devastation Tide that do not "target" which gets you around hex proof. Jace, Memory Adept however IS a very high-cost card for this deck but you didn't mention him.....

so does the first line work as "it breyin is targeted by a spell or ability that an opponent controls add to your mana pool"?.... if so that is a unique deterrent!

love the middle ability too!

the final ability seems a bit much/busted IMO... been playing a lot of yugioh lately so the draw two just seems bananas to me so i might be wrong there lol

overall i like the idea of a defensive lord... Lord of the Unreal and things like that have always been cool to me.

I agree that Drogskol Captain is a solid non-legendary commander. Along those lines, I’ve wondered how a deck built around Lord of the Unreal would play.

Other fun build arounds would be:

Lorescale Coatl

Vizkopa Guildmage

Creeping Trailblazer

Side question: I know Pauper EDH is a fairly popular format, but is there some format that allows both commons and uncommons in the 99 and you’re only allowed a single rare (as the commander)? Would it be called something like “Merchant EDH” or “Peasant EDH?”

mlequesne: That card was actually in a very early version of the deck. I liked it a lot when I first saw it, but it paled in comparison to cards like Lord of the Unreal. At the end of the day I decided it was worth it to use AA for complete hexproof, rather then simply “ward 1” with no AA. But I appreciate the thought, if you think of anything else I’m all ears.

As a side note Kira, Great Glass-Spinner will only protect the Lord of the Unreal and Krovikan Mist. The other illusions can still be targeted and although the spell itself will be countered, the sacrifice trigger will still go on the stack before priority changes.

I have found that using 4 Maskwood Nexus and 4 Grand Architect (which can be used to help cast the nexus) adds a little more, especially if the game goes long.

Since virtuallity, illusion and the unreal are the core of your deck, you might wanna try the Lord of the Unreal.

See you, love your deck :)
