1-1 Grand Prix Montreal Early Rise Trial

So, it seems the deck is popular, since I played the mirror for both matches (it was single elimination). Of note:

I also opened a fourth Glorybringer. It's going right in instead of the second Chandra, Flamecaller.

Updates

proud.awesome, 6 years ago

Removed some cards I don't have, added some newer cards (Battle at the Bridge is so very good here) and pushed more heavily into cheap artifacts.

I'm realizing right now the two weakest points are getting enough mana to get and play ad nauseam, and then not losing too much life. Once you draw the deck, there are creative ways to get mana; notably, discarding cards, play Songs of the Damned and draw cards from Drain Life spells + Well of Lost Dreams.

Haven't had this deck in play for sometime now looking to put in back in rotation. Think it could use an update, any suggestions?

Revision 2.0

KevStormJ, 6 years ago

Some major revisions here. I found this deck to be susceptible to creature aggro decks, like Mono Black Zombies, that can get a turn 5 kill. Haze of Pollen and Renewed Faith just weren't keeping me alive long enough to cycle off. I also had problems with having 7 or more cards in hand after casting New Perspectives. Often I'd have to cast the Haze of Pollen or Renewed Faith to keep alive, and if I was playing first I would be short that first draw. If I had to mulligan, forget it. So I needed something more than a 1 turn combat delay like Haze of Pollen. Enter Sweltering Suns. The 3 damage is capable of handing almost all turn 1-4 creatures and would give me an extra turn or two to get my mana and hand size up while my opponent regroups.

A painful cut I had to make was a copy of Shefet Monitor. It is a very important card to all New Perspectives decks but the math wasn't working out for me. Turn 1-4 are massively important to hitting land drops. I needed to go up to 23 land to increase the odds of hitting those land drops. So sadly I had to cut Shefet Monitor to make room. It was just a dead card when I'm stuck at 3 mana and Vizier of Tumbling Sands does most of the mana generation work when I cycle off.

So the prime load out is vs creature aggro since I expect to run into that the most. My sideboard allows me to reconfigure vs counter control, mid-range, or mirror matches. Scarab Feast can wreak havoc on another New Perspectives deck by hitting Vizier of Tumbling Sands.

I also changed the name of the deck since Horror of the Broken Lands is no longer in it.

Revision 1.1

KevStormJ, 6 years ago

I swapped out one Haze of Pollen for one Renewed Faith. It fits the mana color distribution better, cheaper to cycle and has more benefits to cycling.

Revision 1.0

KevStormJ, 6 years ago

I took red out and added 3 copies of Traverse the Ulvenwald. Originally I had red in to use Sweltering Suns and be able to sideboard in the Horror of the Broken Lands and Fling combo, as well as Glorious End. But in play testing I found that aggro decks could beat me before I got New Perspectives out and cycle off. So I needed another Haze of Pollen. I also needed Traverse the Ulvenwald to help with early game mana fixing and late game pulls of Vizier of Tumbling Sands. Too many times two or more Viziers were getting clumped at the bottom of the deck, forcing me to cycle too far down to get them which leads to decking myself. I dropped the land count by 1 and took out a Faith of the Devoted. Three copies was a bit redundant, especially with Approach of the Second Sun as a backup win con. Without red, my sideboard had to change a lot. I added Dissenter's Deliverance to deal with Marvel decks and Scarab Feast to deal with graveyard returns and delirium. I added another Dispel for control decks though now I'm thinking I may want to switch that back to a Censor. I don't want my total deck cycle count to go below 33. If I were to sideboard in all the Dispels I have a higher chance of cycle fizzle.

Squirrelbacon, 6 years ago

Nothing to major, just fine tuning before taking the deck out. I won't take it out tonight, gonna have to wait a week for cards to come in the mail.

-2 Rakdos Charm

-1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant

+3 Dusk / Dawn

And I fit in Soulfire Grand Master also but I don't remember what I took out. Oops.

Amonkhet Block

-1 Akroma's Vengeance - I've found, throughout my years with this card, that I commonly either hold it in hand for when I need to discard or I just cycle it when I find my boardstate comfortable. I play a few too many artifacts and enchantments for me to play this card with zero losses, and I found that problem artifacts-and-enchantments I can usually get rid of with my premium spot removal or rely on green/white players at the table to take care of them.

-1 Black Sun's Zenith - I've historically found little to say about this card in the deck, which is usually a sign that it hasn't been used all too often and/or it hasn't been used to satisfactory effect. BSZ was initially put in here as another safeguard against boardstates that were protected by indestructibility, since, as a normal boardwipe its rather bad since it's so mana hungry, but it would be shortsighted to regard my other boardwipes as vulnerable to indestructible threats -- even disregarding bounce spells the deck plays powerful wraths like Terminus, Merciless Eviction, and Toxic Deluge that all permanently deal with creatures that dodge "destroy" effects (regenerated and indestructible creatures). I don't like how few board wipes this deck now has with the commencement of this update, so I might look for where I might be able to put another one in, but I was probably ~1 boardwipe too heavy anyway. I would look to fit Damnation in this deck now if I could get my hands on it since its reprint in MM3.

-1 Punish Ignorance - This spell has become more glaringly restrictive in its cost over the years. While our landbase is more than equipped to cast this spell rather easily by the midgame, the cost that Punish Ignorance has requested this deck in exchange for flavor satisfaction has become a bit too high in my recent opinion. I have frequently chosen to keep this card in when considering the amount of potential ways I trigger my Exquisite Blood / Sanguine Bond combo, but even so, our counterspells Absorb and Undermine are cheaper, less color-hungry, and still trigger life loss / life gain. Another concern of mine is my counterspell count -- I might feel the need to put another counterspell slot into the deck in the future if I feel I'm letting too many critical things resolve throughout games.

-1 Psychosis Crawler - I'm reconsidering my paths to winning slightly, taking a particular look at my creature base. Psychosis Crawler is a total flavor victory for sure, but he hasn't really pulled out games for me by himself, and doesn't offer me value the moment I cast him or resolve him. He is best for decks that pick up their entire deck at once so he can swing for lethal almost instantly, and/or decks that draw lots of cards over the course of a repeatable action, like storm/Ad Nauseum decks, to drain opponents out with Crawler's other ability. Our deck does neither of these things, although he frequently will reach a sizable power and toughness and/or drain our opponents a fair amount.

+1 Mystical Tutor - Yuck. Tutors were initially a taboo card for this deck, but it seems times might have changed. At least for now, I'm pulling out some of our chaff for consistency. Tutors also reinforce our deck's toolbox and "everlasting" themes by finding answers that we need when we need them. Mystical Tutor is very mana-efficient and also grabs us instants/sorceries which is on-theme, and while its "on the top of the library" clause might seem to be a downside for our deck, we have many ways to draw off of the top of our deck at instant speed, and Mystical Tutor can consequently also set up miracle triggers for Terminus and Devastation Tide.

+1 Diabolic Tutor - Same as above. Diabolic Tutor is less lean than Mystical Tutor (or Demonic Tutor, unfortunately), but has the added benefit of allowing us to actually grab a win condition or a value engine early - cards which are usually creatures, artifacts, and enchantments in our deck.

+1 Leyline of Anticipation - This has been a long-awaited desire for this deck, and will find itself alongside Vedalken Orrery as well now. This card is obviously awesome for this shell - it helps making our control elements more pervasive and unpredictable for opponents while also propelling some of our win condition plans to greater and more reliable heights.

+1 Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre - I've always been interested in putting one or two of the old (legal) Eldrazi titans into this deck, because they seem to be the penultimate control finishers of the EDH format, providing strong effects on cast, backbreaking and horrific beaters in combat (both due to their size and their Annihilator ability), and an in-a-pinch way to shuffle our graveyard back into our library if our library's longevity or survive-ability is questioned. I personally have always preferred Kozilek, Butcher of Truth over this Ulamog, but ironically, when I bought a collection some time ago, both the old Emrakul and Ulamog were among the cards I obtained but no Kozilek. Nonetheless, both of the EDH-legal old Eldrazi Titans are all-stars in a deck like this... providing both a huge beater than can lock people out of the game in a number of combat steps if Annihilator proves devastating and another way that we continue our deck's seemingly-ageless and everlasting functionality. For note, it would appear that Ulamog is a better win condition on his own because he has indestructible (and his on-cast trigger can be used aggressively to destroy blockers and/or ways opponents can resist Annihilator triggers), but Kozilek trades some of his own win-condition glory by not having indestructible to instead draw us cards on cast instead of permanent destruction (thus providing us another avenue to continue our card advantage edge over opponents and eventually finding other win conditions). Honestly, both sound like amazing finishers for a deck like this, since we both like using Ulamog's ability for our control gameplan of removing threats and other problem permanents, but we also like Kozilek's ability for accelerating us ahead in both boardstate and cards. I find that these Eldrazi titans fit a similar role as Serra Avatar does already in our deck (providing a must-answer creature with a complimentary library-salvaging ability to boot), so whether one of them outperforms the other or whether the two kinds of cards should both exist in the deck simultaneously are thoughts I'm considering - their differences are rather blatant but both kinds of cards have pros and cons. One I think worrisome enough is the actual cost - 11 mana is no small amount of mana, and if it doesn't win me the game outright, I am nervous about the card's efficacy. Luckily, this deck plays quite a few lands and also a fair amount of artifact mana rocks, so I'm going to give this guy a shot and see how I feel after some time.

Card Upgrade 14

Driemer84, 6 years ago

Cutting Exsanguinate for Liliana of the Dark Realms. I'm not sure if Liliana makes the final cut, but Exsanguinate is pretty mediocre. If I don't have enough mana to kill people off with it, I usually don't want to cast it since it eats up all my mana for a relatively low impact. Exsanguinate could be filled by any of the cards in my maybe board, but for now I'll give Liliana a chance. Pulling swamps out of my deck seems useful and she can deal with problematic creatures late game. I'm not sure how having competing Liliana's will play out though, especially when one is my general.

Deck Changes

Made a few changes. Swapped out the Cancel for a Hinder. Could situationally be better or worse. Added Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind + Curiosity combo. Gives me another target for the Enlightened Tutor, and can be an in-hand wincon in case we draw our combo pieces. Also upgraded the Crystal Quarry for a Cascading Cataracts.

Opinion pole the first!

Buufreak, 6 years ago

Okay, so I've been toying with this deck for a while now, and I do conceit that it needs a little help here and there. I'm looking at taking out the 5 monuments. They just aren't doing enough. Also, not sure how I feel about Throne. It has a decent effect, but that only matters when creatures are tapped at the end of my turn, meaning I'm left a fair bit open. I don't like being open!

So I've looked over the suggestions others have given, and I love Pillar of the Paruns. That's likely added, no questions asked. Farseek seems like a good add too. But besides those I'm not too certain what could go in place of the artifacts. I'm open to suggestions!

Major Deck Changes

ArchangelofWaxhaw, 6 years ago

After testing my deck against a tier one Abzan Delirium list, I have made some changes.

The dark confidants were not performing well at all as they were always killed by the opponent and never got the card advantage. Also, the Faithless Looting wasn't doing as well as I would like as my cards ended up in the grave, which isn't the point in this deck.

So as for the changes I added in Painful Truths as it is 3 color and I can draw more cards to have a higher card advantage and the lifeloss is easily offset by my lifegain. I also added Soulfire Grand Master to gain even more life and have the ability late game to keep my instants and sorceries in hand. Finally, I added Young Pyromancer so that I have more bodies on board to stop the opponents from connecting damage and to give more bodies for Archangel of Thune to hit.

List Changes

MTGApprentice2016, 6 years ago

I decided to remove what I called the “control package” and made a few minor changes to the list. Not sure if I’ll keep these changes but they seemed like a good idea. Especially the Gilded Lotus because having more mana is always good.

Removed Inninstrad rares for some future proofing. I think the changes wont affect the deck at all.

la protezione

lornlynx, 6 years ago

removed Mycoloth for Neurok Stealthsuit: I seriously need more protection, Ezuri gets hated as soon as I get more than two exp counters and I need more ways to ensure that he stays on board before I my token generators. Speaking of generators, Mycoloth is quite expensive and doesn't do anything unless I already have the board/exp counters to support him. It is nice that he works against the hate orb (Torpor Orb) but it doesn't seem worth the trade. I am trying the suit now instead of the boots for its instant equip shenanigans.

Swapped Kaya for Nissa

Die4Dethklok, 6 years ago

Just that. I'll be testing Nissa, Steward of Elements in this deck in place of Kaya, Ghost Assassin. With all the ramp, it should be easy to play her big, then she gets to drop creatures onto the battlefield for free. Could be good, could be bad. I'm curious.

The 1st Cutting Line

Ub3rW4r, 6 years ago

After having TheCommandZone published a whole episode dedicated to Boros, I had some additional cards to consider and an even harder time to cut the maybes down to 100 sharp. Now that this is down, playtesting can begin - and once I see how (and if) my plans work out with this deck (essentially, to have flavour and consistency as well as playability go hand in hand) I'll surely add more of an introductory text to this.
