Prossh, Skyraider of Kher

(Note: I deliberately attempted to avoid infinite combos in this list.)

With this deck I aimed towards using Prossh's tokens for more than just sacrifice fodder. While Prossh's original deck featured many cards that took advantage of sacrificing stuff, I felt like the deck just didn't produce enough tokens to be worth running so many sacrifice outlets. As I started replacing the sacrifice outlets with token producers or buffs, it dawned upon me that Prossh's deck could easily be turned into a swarm deck, with sacrifice being a secondary strategy to trigger stuff like Grave Pact.

The decklist

The decklist should be pretty self-explanatory, but I'll highlight a few cards:

  1. Beastmaster Ascension: For a measly 3 mana, Prossh and his tokens turn into 40 power when turned sideways, possibly on turn 6 if Fires of Yavimaya or similar is on the battlefield.
  2. Grave Pact/Dictate of Erebos: Amazing synergy with Prossh, as you can cast him and sac his tokens to kill off your opponents' creatures.
  3. Craterhoof Behemoth: This deck creates a lot of tokens, and Craterhoof hitting the table almost always means someone is going to die.
  4. Plague of Vermin : Everyone can pay life to make tokens. This is good for you, because people who pay a lot of life will be easy to kill with Prossh by sacrificing the newly-acquired tokens. Also we'll generally be the ones getting the most tokens due to Doubling Season etc., and there's a decent chance the tokens will come down with haste to boot.
  5. Fresh Meat: Sacrifice all of the small tokens to Prossh, then cast Fresh Meat to get the same amount of 3/3's. Great synergy with Doubling Season & friends too, resulting in up to eight times the amount of creatures sacrificed as 3/3 tokens.
  6. Hellion Eruption: Comparable to Fresh Meat, but with larger tokens. Triggers Mazirek's ability, leaving the tokens huge after the dust has settled.
  7. Descent of the Dragons: A selective Hellion Eruption with wings. Also works as removal, though it doesn't trigger Mazirek.
  8. Mycoloth: Casting Prossh and then following up with Mycoloth to eat the tokens is dead sexy, especially if you've got a Doubling Season out.
  9. Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest: "A player" and "permanent" are the words that make this card insane. Every time someone sacrifices anything else than Mazirek himself (e.g. opponent sacs a fetchland, you sacrifice a token etc.), our entire board gets buffed. That's a metric ton of counters.
  10. Insurrection: Steals all creatures on the battlefield, untaps them and gives them haste. Becomes an amazing Plague Wind/ Slave of Bolas fusion when Prossh is on the battlefield.
  11. Hit/Run : Attack with six 0/1 tokens and they become 30 damage if not blocked. This card is deceptively powerful, and can always be used as removal in a pinch.

Final comments

I love the deck because of how dynamic it is. You can easily switch between swarming and sacrificing for value depending on how turtled-up your opponents are, and the longer the game goes, the more tokens you'll get. Just remember to play smart - sometimes you'll want to hold back your Beastmaster Ascension or other buff cards until the turn where you want to attack to give your opponents the least amount of warning.

Feel free to leave constructive criticism!

To do list:
  1. Upgrade mana base (low priority)

Trying more clobbering and less removal. I'm pretty excited about Decimator and Evangel for reasons I've listed before. Thunderstaff is just an alround solid card in a lot of situations, and Cryptolith Rite helps mana fix and ramp into big spells.

I'm currently considering From Beyond, but I'm not sure what I'd cut, and it feels a tad slow. I've also been considering cutting Master of the Wild Hunt for something. Attrition might go back in.
