Riku Nuclear Reactor

Commander / EDH

Burger_1987

For some time now I've been looking to build something fresh and new. Being quite the fan of Energy counters I was always wondering how I could bring it to my favorite format, commander. So I started plotting on what commander would be the perfect fit and good ol Riku of Two Reflections came to mind. Not only does it fit majority of the energy cards but also it is great to run combos and create additional tokens that generate more value. The main idea of the deck is to run multiple ETB effects while still finding ways to win without relying on combos.

The best combos all run on ETB effects and to run infinite combos is the best way to generate copious amounts of Energy.

  1. Cloudstone Curio + Omniscience and any 2 creatures to bounce and cast them over and over.
  2. Aethertide Whale + Omniscience bounce Aethertide Whale back to your hand only to cast it over and over.
  3. Dualcaster Mage + Ghostly Flicker Any energy creature to create more infinite Energy or even infinite mana.

These are just some of the easiest combos to get infinite.

Now that we created tons of Energy or found ways to generate infinite Energy we need to make sure we have ways to close down the game and win.

Some of the best cards for this would be:

  1. Architect of the Untamed or Whirler Virtuoso to create infinite tokens.
  2. Lightning Runner is awesome with tons of energy to keep smashing face until you win.
  3. After buffing up a creature such as Riparian Tiger or Aetherwind Basker, Overwhelming Stampede closes the game out quickly.
  4. Voltaic Brawler or Riparian Tiger or Aetherwind Basker to swing out and smash face. Keep in mind that you will have at least 2 of these with Riku of Two Reflections in play and activated. You can always create more by flickering one of them to create another one so that you have 3 of any to swing out all your opponents.

It is very possible to win the game without having to run the combos which gives this deck a slight edge in comparison to other combo decks. Riku of Two Reflections is great at creating a very intimidating board state making it easy to apply pressure by playing aggressively.

Some cards really bring up the price of this deck and one could easily drop the price already lower than it is by dropping a few cards. The cards that really impact the price of this deck include:

  1. Doubling Season, this is only good should you would want to win without all the fancy combos, but if combos is not your thing then definitely look at keeping this in.
  2. Cloudstone Curio, although it's not too expensive it is still the second most expensive card in the deck currently. This card can easily be dropped as Aethertide Whale and even Aethersquall Ancient gives ways to keep putting things back into your hand.
  3. Reiterate + Turnabout, the only reason these two are in is to give another way to generate infinite mana, standing in for Omniscience. If you are certain that you can run Omniscience without it being removed you should be fine, otherwise hold on to Omniscience until you have another combo piece that's ready to go.
