Sideboard

I was tired of so many Ezuri decks, so I decided do make one around Yisan, the Wanderer Bard. After several tests I made this decklist.

I'm still testing this list, so any help is really appreciated.

How the cards were chosen

  • Abzan Beastmaster: Green has a notable problem: card draw. I hope this one might help a little bit. It can work well with the +1/+1 counters and, if needed, with Skinshifter .

  • Arbor Elf/Elvish Mystic/Llanowar Elves: T1 mana dorks is a must in your opening hand. Mulligan until you get at least one.

  • Champion of Lambholt: Make all creatures unblockable is a dream, but worth the slot. Work well with Beastmaster.

  • Elvish Archdruid: The great ramp guy in this deck. Because of him we can use Yisan ability and cast other spells in the same turn early game. He also protect the little elves.

  • Elvish Herder: If the unblockable doesn't work, trample will do the job.

  • Eternal Witness: She is really useful against black decks. The priority is recover Yisan, if he dies.

  • Ferropede : A key card in this deck, he must be protected in order to attack each turn and provide reusability to Yisan's ability.

  • Glistener Elf: A alternative wincon.

  • Invasive Species: In case we need to bounce something.

  • Mistcutter Hydra/Vastwood Hydra: The finishers of this deck. Elvish Herder can make them deal damage without a problem.

  • Scavenging Ooze: Graveyard hate, a little lifegain and can turn a thing while the game is played.

  • Scryb Ranger: The only flying creature in this deck, helps attacking and untapping Yisan or one hydra in order to block or even untapping Elvish Archdruid for more mana.

  • Seeker of Skybreak: Has the same function than Scryb Ranger.

  • Skinshifter : The cameleon. If block is needed, he is there. Attack? Ok. Draw? Yeah. He's always good.

  • Wall of Tanglecord: Since flying creatures is a thing, it is here because of reach.

  • Wasteland Viper: A combat trick in creature form, but useful as a creature as well.
  • Bow of Nylea: Because Trample+Deathtouch is awesome. The ability is incredibly versatile, dealing with flying, board wipes and burn strategies.

  • Horned Helm/Ring of Kalonia: Trample givers.

  • Mask of Avacyn/Canopy Cover: Protect Yisan and Ferropede is a necessity.

  • Power Conduit: If Ferropede fails in removing counters task, there is a good alternative. Maintain value in late game.
  • Slippery Karst/Tranquil Thicket: Cycling lands may help in mid-late game like a draw option.
  • Still under construction. I just don't have a parameter of metagame, so by now it supposed to fix the deck's weaknesses.
  • Bonds of Mortality: To keep the deck playable against U/W and G/W.

  • Ground Seal: A option against Alesha decks and any form of reanimate.

  • Skyreaping / Windstorm : In case flying become truly a problem.

  • Witchstalker : I don't know exactly what to expect, but I'll try it out.
  • Other options

  • Rites of Flourishing: I never used or see this card in play, but it might be really useful in this deck replacing Abzan Beastmaster.
  • If you have any advice about this card, please let me know.

Ok, so now you know why I choose these cards and how they act individually, but how the deck works?

Starting hand: It must have, at least, two Forest and one mana dork. Otherwise, mulligan until you have something similar.

So, the game supposed to be like this:

    T1: Forest, Llanowar Elves.
T2: Forest, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard.

By this, we start to use Yisan's ability to cast creatures each turn, in the order above:

T3: Yisan's first counter, so another mana dork is appreciable.
T4: Second counter, Seeker of Skybreak.
    T5: Last counter, Ferropede .

From there, we'll attack with Ferropede each turn, deal damage and remove a counter from Yisan. In the second main phase, activate his ability again and so on.

For this plan work, would be really nice start with the protector in your hand, or slow down your moves to get one. Anyway, if Ferropede or Yisan dies, we have some cards to recover them and alternatives to this gameplan, not the end of the world.

Cast bigger creatures, give them ramp is the victory is close. End of game.

    About the deck's past

  • Leatherback Baloth: Is just a "big"/early threat.

  • Kalonian Tusker: See above.

  • Oran-Rief, the Vastwood

  • Gaea's Anthem: I used to run this because of Force of Savagery.

  • Force of Savagery: Was not good enough for my gameplan.

  • Whisperer of the Wilds: Cutted in favor of Seeker of Skybreak.
  • Last, but not least:

As you may noticed, this is a budget version, but some cards can be replaced, like the examples below.
  • Sylvan Library: Probably the best draw engine for this deck, using the Abzan Beastmaster/Rites of Flourishing slot.

  • Mirri's Guile: Another alternative for Abzan Beastmaster.

  • Priest of Titania: Replacing Whisperer of the Wilds.

  • Ezuri, Renegade Leader: Instead of Elvish Herder, even with a larger cmc.

  • Fyndhorn Elves: Removing Glistener Elf for another mana dork.

  • Genesis Hydra/Hooded Hydra/Primordial Hydra: Removing Invasive Species, Skinshifter and Wall of Tanglecord for a more agressive line of action.

  • Chord of Calling/Genesis Wave/Green Sun's Zenith/Worldly Tutor: Two of those instead of Horned Helm and Ring of Kalonia.

  • Lightning Greaves/Swiftfoot Boots: Alternatives to Mask of Avacyn and Canopy Cover.

  • Also, you can improve the mana base:

  • Arcane Lighthouse: Against Geist of Saint Traft, if necessary.

  • Cavern of Souls

  • Wooded Foothills/Windswept Heath/Misty Rainforest/Verdant Catacombs

  • Gaea's Cradle

  • Ghost Quarter/Wasteland

  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
  • If you find another alternative that I don't listed above, feel free to comment!
