(Green): Target creature gains trample until end of turn.
Elvish Herder Discussion

Hi, I must thank you for the inspiration on this deck. I've been building my Animar for a while myself and it has been a pleasure to use your suggestions to ramp the power level. One thing I'm having trouble with is getting past chump blocks on Animar without trample and also protecting him while he's out. With that said I'd like to get your take on a few things so I can better understand how to pilot this beast.
What's your view on balancing getting Animar out quickly vs putting some type of protection out for him? What's the first protection card you go for or do you just go all Animar ramp and then just hope for protection from creatures you're ramping with?
Board wipes. Is there any answer to this?

Elvish Herder may be better than Eldrazi Devastator since it can give your lands trample too and is an elf. My friend runs a similar, non-pauper, list that runs Wirewood Herald and Seeker of Skybreak , which could be interesting inclusions in the deck.

Hey Happy774 - glad I could help inspire you to build something :) It can be pretty explosive with it's damage!
As for alternatives.... Teferi's Protection is a tough one to replace because it's so good and we're already running Heroic Intervention. Perhaps something like Ajani's Presence would work as you won't have loads of cats out that need saving at once, or even Rootborn Defenses (or the new card from RNA that's similar?) - Possibly Blinding Fog or the rather expensive to cast Join Shields? None of them are as good sadly....
A swap for Rhonas the Indomitable would really be looking for something that enables trample as that's why he's in the deck. A quick Scryfall search throws up some stuff like Elvish Herder or Creeperhulk or Mosstodon but I'm not sure how great they'd be (they're also not cats, but then neither is Rhonas....)
Hope that helps!

HashMasta, thanks for the suggestions. I thought of Viridian Longbow, and it's a good suggestion. I'll play around with it. Sparring Collar is an interesting suggestion. I was unaware of this card-- again, a nice suggestion.
I think at the moment, I need to expand the creature base a bit and I need to cut Elvish Herder down to probably 2x, and maybe only 2x or 3x of Llanowar Augur. Playing the deck on MTGO, I seem to get those two cards with some frequency without good targets all the time. I think I want to push to 26 creatures while limiting those two a bit. Not sure I'll have space for either of your suggestions, but maybe I'll try splitting the Rancors with Viridian Longbow (i.e., maybe 2x of each?) and see how that goes. Could be pretty good.
Thanks for the suggestions and the upvote!

Finally I would get a Nettle Sentinel as a 4 of in this deck. Drop your Silhana Ledgewalker and Thornweald Archer. Would maybe throw archers in sideboard cause without opposing flyers, it doesnt seem all that great.
Sorry if it was a bit mean but it is a good deck dont get me wrong. just if your gonna run 16 lands, you need more mana sources to make up for it and less cmc creatures.

I feel a bit strange when Wirewood Pride is not in an elf tribal deck.
Another way to get some damage dealt is Elvish Herder.

tmoore17: So, what I'm going for here is like... I've got all that ramp so I can fill the field. Once the field is filled, swing with a bunch of little guys all at once, and once one is through, buff them using some combination of Might of the Masses, Timberwatch Elf, and Vines of Vastwood.
I would like more card draw, but I want to keep it mono-green so I don't have to pay for some of the pricier Elf options out there to help mana-fix, like Arbor Elf.
No data for this card yet.
