Playing Gaddock Teeg againts unsuspecting fools usually results in the following sequence of events:

1: Place Gaddock Teeg on the table.

2: Collective groan. "That's your commander?"

  1. Everyone counterpicks with creature based decks.

  2. They lose because Gaddock Teeg shuts down many vital cards, even in creature based decks, annd because they aren't suspecting a non-control variant.

My Gaddock Teeg EDH deck with a slight reanimator theme. It's not true Reanimator, but there are many cards that allow me to return creatures in my graveyard to my hand. The deck abuses ETB effects and "when this creature dies" effects to do all the things I can't do without non creature spells of CMC 4 or greater.

Why use Gaddock Teeg as my commander in a reanimator deck? Two reasons. First, many decks in my playgroup rely on infinite combos, high-cost cards like Time Stretch to get ahead, or ramp spells with a high cost like Gilded Lotus and Skyshroud Claim Gaddock Teeg instantly shuts them down without hindering me, because my deck is tailored to play around him of course. The second reason is that my playgroup favors mass removal to targeted removal. The only cards in it that can get rid of him are Swords to Plowshares, Beast Within, and Cyclonic Rift (thank you, new commander tuck rule!). Oh, and counterspells. But since I can cast him turn 2, I'm not worried about him being countered, as he usually doesn't leave the field once he hits it.

One of the strongest combos in the deck is Yomiji, Who Bars the Way + Saffi Eriksdotter. When Saffi's effect is activated with Yamiji in play, it is immediately returned to play, allowing me to infinitely reanimate all my creatures in play.

Even though I can't use Green Sun's Zenith in this deck, GW still offers plenty of tutoring options. Despite it's limitations Birthing Pod is one of the best due to it's re-useability, and it triggers both ETB effects and death effects as needed. eladami's call, Worldy Tutor , Congregation at Dawn, and Altar of Bone are all great ways to get what I want, when I want it. Altar of Bone has the benefit of triggering death abilities of the creature I sacrifice as well.
