Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief [EDH]

Commander / EDH GU (Simic)

Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief

Whenever a player casts a spell that targets only a single creature other than Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief, you may copy that spell. The copy targets Ivy.

(Probably 8/10. I did not want to go the obvious competitive route for winning the game such as Thoracle/Pseudo-Doomsday, but there are still some great fast mana acceleration pieces and no-cost countermagic.)

First of all lets talk about the Commander Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief. She's a 2/1 flier for with a unique ability that lets us copy any spell that targets any other creature than her (and the copy must target Ivy). Lets break this down:

— with only 1 toughness she is not resistant versus cheap, damage oriented board wipes — flying means we will probably have atleast one opponent that we can attack without being scared of blockers (so our Curiosity styled cards can connect) — since she is in simic colors, we can use mana dorks (that allow us a lower number of lands) and countermagic — her main ability is the bread and butter of this deck and almost every card slot is devoted into that

Secondly, lets talk how does she win.

— An elephant in the room: Forced Fruition. Thats it, just decking our opponents. But it gets better, since we can quadruple the fun with Copy Enchantment, Estrid's Invocation and Mirrormade! There are only 2 tutors that can find this card (Long-Term Plans and Ethereal Usher), but given the number of draw this deck has, I've been able to pull it in more than 2/3 of the games.

Venerated Rotpriest can also bring you victory — probably faster than the option above, but without the chaos that Forced Fruition brings. Every spellcast on him, or any other creature (other then ivy) will give your opponent 2 poison counters when our Commander is on the battlefield! It gets a lot faster with Sakashima of a Thousand Faces or Irenicus's Vile Duplication. Most of our deck is just cantrips that will draw us 2 cards for 1 mana, so this card will get serious pretty fast. Just for !

— Another win-con is Ancestral Mask. Since we get to copy any spell that targets only a single creature other than Ivy, we are gonna have a lot of Auras on the table. As an addition bonus, it counts for opponent's enchantments aswell. With this card, getting our commander to 22+ power is not a problem and with flying, it will most likely connect.

How does the playstyle look?

An ideal start for you is a mana-dork first turn (mana artifact for a bonus), Ivy turn 2 with a cantrip on the dork. From there we start to cycle through the deck to find a win-con. I usually keep counterspells for Ivy's protection and answer only a opponent's pieces that can win the game on the spot. It's usually wiser to not use Ancestral Mask as a first enchant you play, since it most likely get your Ivy killed without doing its job. On the other hand, there can be a game where playing Venerated Rotpriest turn 1 is a great play, just to burn enemy removal's early in the game which result in slowing them down a bit.

Notable card inclusion:

  1. Sisay's Ingenuity — At first look this doesn't do much. But with Ivy it's still 2 cards for 1 mana, and adding value to: Tanglespan Lookout, Setessan Champion, Sanctum Weaver, Twinning Staff or Ancestral Mask.
  2. Collector Ouphe — Since this deck contains only 5 artifacts, this is a really nice stax piece to slow our opponents while giving as a creature to cast our cantrips on.
  3. Counterspells — Our countermagic consist only of counter that can be either cast for free, or up to one mana. This deck can't float mana early that well, since its main focus early is to setup a drawing or ramp engine.

Let me know what you think, I'd be grateful for any suggestions/notes.
