Lavabrink Venturer

Creature — Human Soldier

As Lavabrink Venturer enters the battlefield, choose odd or even. (Zero is even.)

Lavabrink Venturer has protection from each converted mana cost/mana value of the chosen value. ((Remember the acronym debt.) This can't be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by anything of the chosen value. Anything of the chosen value attached to this immediately falls off.)

What you want is not impossible. But the cards to make it good do not currently exist. Putting approach into any lifegain deck that is budget and runs like Silence or something to prevent your opponents interaction. It will come up maybe 1 in 100 games as the way you win that you win. Maybe. That's with a low win rate already. That's completely fine. Im looking it as if you plan to play fnm meta not a tourney. But i like to win sometimes personally and seriously think approach is a bad card when it cannot be properly supported like TapatioDorito pointed out. If this is what you want go ahead.

I wish you luck but the best I can suggest to make it more competitive is pivot off of one of your constraints. And go:

lifegain without worrying about approach.

Enchantment control with like Solemnity Nine Lives combo with approach wincon

Free win white? With alot of meta game info for "correct" plays and silver bullets like Rest in Peace Sanctum Prelate Lavabrink Venturer to prevent your opponents from doing anything important. Winning sometimes with approach.

Skyclave Apparition would be helpfull against crabs..

I may try adding Heliod's Punishment hadn't really conidered that one and i don't think i have ever seen it played. It actually makes a good bit of sense in this deck though.

Lavabrink Venturer is solid and can be inflated

I don't see Emeria's Call  Flip doing to much good, though it is castable with this deck, I guess you get a free attack but rarely could you shatter after it,

maybe take out Felidar Retreat, it often is awkward though it has saved a game or 2.

Mangara, the Diplomat x2 is another thought i was having to replace felidar.

Some good includes would be Heliod's Punishment, Emeria's Call  Flip, Skyclave Apparition and Lavabrink Venturer this like a fun deck that will throw some people off.

I think these cards are too overcosted/inefficient for standard: Eidolon of Inspiration
Victory's Envoy
Grasping Giant
Resolute Rider

But here are a couple more efficient threats that also help to disrupt your opponent: Eidolon of Obstruction
General's Enforcer
Tithe Taker
Lavabrink Venturer (this is not turned off by Hushbringer)
Murderous Rider - you definitely need to include this! It doesn't count as a non-creature, and you will be running into Uro. Keep in mind you turn off Uro's ETB draw with Hushbringer, but also his self-sacrifice trigger, so you're giving your opponents t3 Uro.
Rankle, Master of Pranks

I hope this helps!

plakjekaas, it's more about protecting me and my creatures than protecting my enemy. Why would I?

Fun fact, from one of my games, an opponent tried to do the smart thing, and cast Lavabrink Venturer calling Even. Turns out, when damage can't be prevented, it includes prevention due to protection. That poor guy lasted all of one block.

Hey, good start upgrading the precon on a budget.

28 lands is not enough land for an avg. CMC of 3.4 which is high. I recommend 36 lands and adding Knight of the White Orchid. First strike with a two drop Human is good with +2 pump from Jirina. You want to take more advantage of Jirina who's a four drop anthem effect for Humans. This means you want to consistently be able to play more impactful one drops (Champion of the Parish)/two drops (Thalia's Lieutenant)/three drops (Frontline Medic) to attack with the turn you play Jirina.

Tribal creature strategies in Commander fold to board wipes. To combat this play more repeatable instant speed indestructible protection (Etchings of the Chosen), creature recursion (Phyrexian Reclamation), reanimation (Alesha, Who Smiles at Death) and noncreature repeatable sources of Humans (Outlaws' Merriment).

Budget lands to consider adding:

Cards to consider cutting to add more lands and other suggestions:

Would you like more help?

Good luck with your deck.

Ikoria Review:

Lavabrink Venturer: Will definitely try out. The new protection ability is quite intriguing.

Checkpoint Officer: Great in limited but a hard pass in our deck.

Daysquad Marshal: Same as above. Our deck has other ways of creating tokens.

Snare Tactician: Third verse like the first as John of Heroes and Legends would say.

Perimeter Sergeant: Designed to be in a human deck.

So this is a reverse for my other EDH deck; Simic Hydra Tribal, we have lots of add ons from C20 and very little from Ikoria.
