TOUCH.... Phage control EDH

Commander / EDH Control Mono-Black

Stachemis

Welcome to my favorite deck. Phage the Untouchable. Phage is a card I've always been fascinated with as a kid. She was of the first cards I saw when entering the game, but was never really playable. This is by no means a powerful deck. It is a deck that requires some politics, smart play, finesse, and as always a little luck.

A few ground rules I have for this deck is it's an all foil deck. Cards that don't currently exist in foil can't be in the deck. I do everything I can to win the game with Phage as I only have one backup wincon. This is a big mana black control deck, so I'm not in a hurry to win. The fewer players I have to worry about the better of course. It is possible to kill two people with Phage in a turn somewhat reliably, so, if I can get people on my side to eliminate one player somewhat early on, the game becomes much more manageable.

If you decide to give this deck (or build your own version) a shot, here are a few tips and play patterns I tend to follow:

1.DON'T BE IN A HURRY: Like I said early on, this isn't a race. In fact, the longer the game goes the more likely you are to win. You will be a threat if you rush to kill someone and others can see what you are capable of, especially since the game plan is quite easy to disrupt. However, there is certainly a time in a full pod you will be the beatdown earlier then normal. This generally happens with a good hand and opponents not doing anything meaningful. It is however rare. You really want to make as many friends at the table as possible, even if it means holding back your own game plan a good amount. The more people you can keep off your back the better. This strategy requires you to be borderline letting people win. You have to be on top of things and know what's possible from other decks to, so you really need to know the lay of the land here.

2.CRITICAL MASS IS KEY: Your first move in terms of gameplay is to get a card draw engine online. This a pretty normal for a control deck. You need to have interaction when necessary, and cards to advance your game plan.

3.INTERACTION WHEN NECESSARY: Next, we should be drawing some answers to slow down our opponents and protect ourselves. Generally our answers are to just clear everything away with something like an All is Dust or Ugin, so we will play a bit on the edge of being too greedy so we can try to expend as many resources out of others. Also in doing so, we will bait out a lot of interaction from opponents that feel like they have to stifle each other with their more pinpoint answers, that could be potentially used on Phage.

4.PHAGE'S ENTRANCE: Alright it's the big moment. We have stabilized and are not in immanent danger. Next is to get a Phage enabler. These consist of: Sundial of the Infinite, Torpor Orb, Platinum Angel, and Command Beacon. Of these, Command Beacon is the safest option but it's one use. The others come with some level of risk, so keep that in mind if you go to cast Phage and somebody is leaving mana up. If they remove your enabler on the stack, you will die. Now is time for the most important and risky step, Phage's grand entrance. It is good to have an Imp's Mischief when you go for the play, but if people are tapped out you can roll the dice. It kind of always is when you play Phage. You will usually have to do this more then once so typically you will want one of the repeatable ways to play her.

That's the deck! It's great fun with lots of room to adjust things. I'm usually moving things in and out.

Enjoy :) Blake
