This is my all-time favorite Commander Deck. I've been working on it for a long time, tweaking and changing it over time. A lot of the card choices are experimental, as I often make changes to the cards. There are definitely a few cards I still need to get for this deck (Strip Mine instead of Encroaching Wastes, stuff like that), but for the most part I'm pretty happy with where it stands.

The biggest thing I've discovered about how to play this deck correctly is this: During your turn, do everything you can to keep as much mana untapped as possible. This deck is EXTREMELY reactive. The best thing you could ever do is pass the turn with a Vedalken Orrery and Eight-and-a-Half Tails in play and a bunch of open mana. Vedalken Orrery is pretty unique, but Sigarda's Aid is a great second copy, and Winding Canyons is a fine third.

Some specific card interactions:

  • Ugin, the Spirit Dragon: Ugin's -X ability is absolutely cruel. I've cast Ugin on the last end step before my turn (thanks to Vedalken Orrery), then used his minus ability for 0, turned a bunch of my opponents' lands white using Eight-and-a-Half Tails, and blown them all up. It's cruel, and it's exactly what you want to do.

  • Sword of War and Peace, and Sword of Light and Shadow: These two swords give protection from white, which massively reduces the mana cost for Eight-and-a-Half Tails. The utility on these two cards is pretty clear.

  • Gideon Jura: The major purpose of this deck is to prevent my opponents from dealing damage to me. Gideon's +2 ability does exactly that. But in addition to that, you can use Eight-and-a-Half Tails' abilities to keep Gideon alive WAY longer than he has any right to.

  • Rune of Protection: White, and Circle of Protection: White: These two cards are all-stars in this deck. With Eight-and-a-Half Tails' second ability and the COP: White ability, you can prevent all damage to you from any source for 2 colorless mana. Although not immediately obvious, this is a major improvement over Eight-and-a-Half Tails' regular first ability.
