Ironshell Beetle

Creature — Insect

When Ironshell Beetle enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.

Saw your reply and got to thinking about this a little more. So here's my random, all over the place thoughts.

Omniscience came to mind for the maybeboard...not sure how well you could get to the 3x blue to cast it easily though.

I don't know why but the Gilder Bairn in your maybeboard strikes me as having potential. What I am thinking would be some repeated way of tapping and untapping it with loads of mana available to keep adding loyalty counters to the planeswalkers you are wanting to add/already have. The big issue would be getting the mana to untap it repeatedly and being able to tap it constantly.

Here's what I am thinking in to fix that problem. Paradise Mantle (pet card) to tap it for mana and Nyxbloom Ancient to make it 3 to pay for the untap effect all at once. Keep doing that and you could put unlimited loyalty counters on the walkers and ultimate them the turn they come out.

At one point I wanted to suggest Leyline of Abundance but it doesn't have synergy with Arbor Elf. It could be a turn 0 play for free devotion though.

Another card I considered was Incubation Druid but you'd want to find a way to cheat the adapt cost on it. The graft mechanic came to mind but you'd still have to wait a turn to tap it (obviously). Ironshell Beetle maybe? Or there's Vivien, Arkbow Ranger Like I said at the beginning, all random ideas. I do like that you are open to big changes in the deck.

Last couple things for this post... I think you could use a couple more lands and under your turn 3 directions you wrote over when you probably meant other...just a hunch though.

Great start! You have pretty much all the good kicker cards. I think you could focus a bit more on the secondary theme of Hallar, which is +1/+1 counters. Hallar doesn't care where the counters come from, which means you don't actually need that many Kicker cards to make him deal tons of damage.

Hunger of the Howlpack is a great addition to the deck, being one of the most efficient counter-givers in Pauper.

Elven Rite, New Horizons and Soul's Might are all very efficient ways to get lots of counters on your Commander.

Mutant's Prey and Hunt the Weak are great removal spells for your deck that is chock-full of +1/+1 counters. Feral Contest also isn't bad.

Ivy Lane Denizen is a must have in this deck. You make plenty of tokens, which can either make Hallar massive or simply make your 1/1s into 2/2s, which is an incredible boost.

Longshot Squad gives most of your team reach. Aquastrand Spider also does it for a cost, but can also distribute counters. Spike Colony is a pretty beefy creature that can also give its counters to others. This can make combat very difficult for the opponent on top of all the synergy it gives naturally.

Horned Kavu is extremely useful in this deck, since it can re-buy so many of your ETB triggers for lots of value.

It's so hard to get card advantage in these colours. I would definitely play Entourage of Trest to try to keep up with Blue and Black decks. I also don't leave home without Rolling Thunder and Elven Cache in these colours as cards to catch you up in card advantage. You could also be running up to six cycling lands, namely Tranquil Thicket and Forgotten Cave. In terms of synergy, you could also go for Tishana's Wayfinder and Brazen Buccaneers.

I would also think about adding all the mediocre +1/+1 counter distributers, like Bond Beetle, Kujar Seedsculptor, Ironshell Beetle, Scrounging Bandar, Satyr Grovedancer.

Hello again!

First and foremost, thank you MonkeySit for your kind and helpful comment!

I've taken your suggestion to heart and already meddled around a bit. I removed the 4x Ironshell Beetle in trade for another 2x Pledge of Unity and 2x Evolution Sage and it already seems to work a lot better!

I haven't gotten around to test Nissa, Who Shakes the World yet, but I think I'll substitute her for the 2x Wanderer's Strike . But she seems like a nice addition/win condition to the deck!

I do not really like Wild Onslaught because i already have a lot of non-creature spells, but I might try substituting the 2x Bloom Hulk for 2x Shalai, Voice of Plenty because i really like the hexproof it gives to creatures like Mowu, Loyal Companion with 12~ +1/+1-counters!

As for the thing about Arlinn, Voice of the Pack and Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves , I think i prefer leaving them 2x and enjoying their rarer appearence, because i think Ajani, the Greathearted is too good to pass up on. (Same with Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter )

Still, thank you for your kind suggestions, I will of course update this once I tested more cards!

Welcome to the game!

I'd probably start by adding in 2 more copies of Evolution Sage . I've fiddled with these on MTGA and combined them with Nissa, Who Shakes the World and gotten my Nissa sitting on 25 loyalty counters and creatures buffed to roughly the same power and toughness.

You're going to want more reliable ways to put +1/+1 counters on your creatures to make the proliferate worthwhile. So I'd actually take out Ironshell Beetle , I'd personally have 4 copies of Pledge of unity, and a couple other choices are cards like Shalai, Voice of Plenty or Wild Onslaught .

The most important thing is that you need to decide on what you want your deck to do - You said you love Arlinn, Voice of the Pack and Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves but you only have two copies of each. If you want to focus them a bit more you will want 1-2 more copies of each I would guess. You could probably take out Ajani, the Greathearted in that case because you're going to get the same amount of life gain. You could probably do without so many copies of Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter too.

these are only a few suggestions but ultimately in the end, as long as you make sure you have fun with your deck, then you're playing magic the right way! have fun and goodluck!

Bond Beetle is probably better than Ironshell Beetle for what it's worth, though I find them both to be rather weak in EDH.

Hi, somewhat of a interesting deck, My primary suggestion is to considerably lower or take out a bunch of the 1x's. The ones in which you need most should always be put at a 4x or at least a 3x.

I'd start off with something like this in a way to revolve around Undergrowth and Vraska. Someone else can help out and build upon this idea for later if they like or improve upon it for I don't often play Golgari. Hopefully it helps out a bit.

Creatures

4x Glowspore Shaman 4x Attendant of Vraska 4x Rhizome Lurcher 2x Lotleth Giant 4x Swarm Guildmage 4x Beast Whisperer 3x Ironshell Beetle

Sorceries

2x Vraska's Stoneglare 2x-4x Find / Finality

Instants

2x-4x Necrotic Wound 2x-4x Status / Statue

Artifact

1x-2x Golgari Locket

Planeswalker

1x-2x Vraska, Regal Gorgon

Lands

4x Overgrown Tomb 4x Woodland Cemetery 7x Swamp 7x Forest

Hopefully some of this helps out :). Good luck with the deck building

Yeah, that one mana makes a big difference. I get why they would choose to go with Ironshell Beetle though, a bear that can boost something else later in the game is a bit more useful overall than the Bond Beetle version.
