Mutant's Prey Discussion

I'm not sure I like the Green splash here.

Aggressive Mammoth , at triple seems way too difficult to cast with just a splash.

Mutant's Prey is probably just bad. You have access to better removal in white, and the fact that you need a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it to even work means that you will have many situations where you can't even cast it.

Behemoth Sledge is great, but probably not worth plashing for as a single card if you cut the other two, which I think you should.

On another note, I suggest you keep your deck at 60 cards, and if you don't you should definitely add more lands.

I've noticed a fair bit of graveyard interaction but I don't see a lot of recursion effects. Since bears are typically small, I think it would help to add more anthem effects such as Vanquisher's Banner & Coat of Arms . I think Rhonas's Monument is a must in this deck because it acts as a mana cost reduction and a pump as well. The deck seems a little light on removal interaction, although you are in mono-green, there are some decent interaction with +1/+1 synergy like Mutant's Prey or Hunt the Weak . To facilitate that +1/+1 synergy, maybe adding Path of Discovery as well. There is a lot of ramp in this deck, which in theory is good, but your also in mono-green. I might recommend removing some to make way for the previous suggestions. Nature's Claim is a must and perhaps some additional card draw like Rishkar's Expertise would help.

Since your deck is so focused on +1 counters, I would recommend Mutant's Prey over Prey Upon . It's conditional, but in my experience the instant speed is more than worth it for a +1-counter-centric deck.

I love it, but I think Slitherhead is too slow. Vulturous Zombie could really help you ramp the +1 counters, especially against opponents that run sacrifice engines. You should also replace a forest with a Llanowar Reborn for the free +1/+1 counter on a creature (this counter can get doubled too if you proliferate, which gets you more mileage by throwing free +1s on creatures entering the battlefield). Consider also Forced Adaptation , which is slow but imagine the combination of having it on Fathom Mage or Sharktocrab , Mutant's Prey makes good removal, and Savage Summoning if you're playing against a lot of blue. (I like these better than Villainous Wealth .) I would also put Nimbus Swimmer and Shambleshark into your maybeboard, play test with them, but I don't feel confident enough to say definitely mainboard them. They might be good, so I just thought to mention them. (Evolve is just so good) These are just my thoughts. I like it overall! GLHF

What do you think of this combo:

  • Any creature with 3 +1/+1 counters.
  • Galloping Lizrog x3.
  • Win on upkeep.

A mere 17 mana combo! And with Alchemist's Refuge , you can do it at instant speed! If you feel like this Hearthstone-level of BS-ery is acceptable in your games, I think it'd be the most exciting way to play into the Ascendancy win-con. Just play pure defense until then, foggy creatures, tokens, counterspells, etc.

Since your playgroup probably wouldn't appreciate that combo, however, you can focus on chaining Lizrogs for a few turns and protecting Ascendancy. The game plan then simplifies to:

  • Stick creatures that contest the board. Use them as soft removal with Clear Shot and Mutant's Prey type effects.
  • Draw your deck to find 3 Galloping Lizrog .
  • Play the Lizrogs for an inevitable doom-parade of mutants. Hopefully they will be threatening enough to prevent your opponent from dealing with the Ascendancy itself.
  • Curator's Ward might be overkill for protecting Simic Ascendancy , you have Turn Aside already which is probably better. Feels more interactive too, I think.

My only other suggestions would be Master Biomancer , Fathom Mage and Zameck Guildmage (or Combine Guildmage , but Zameck is better I think) if you want a slower build-up. Vigean Hydropon maybe? And Novijen, Heart of Progress seems like an easy include. I like your idea behind Hadana's Climb  Flip, but to me that leans towards Ascendancy as the secondary win-con, not primary.

I like what I see so far. The land count seems right. I see many staples that I'd like to see. I'd like to see Path of Ancestry, Darksteel Pendant, Reclaim, Entourage of Trest, Mutant's Prey, Hunt the Weak, the two green cycle lands, Explorer's Scope, Village Elder, Crown-Hunter Hireling.

To make room I would look at the following to take out: Sizzle, Welder Automaton, Wrap in Vigor, Withstand Death, Blinding Fog, Jolrael's Favor, Nature's Panoply, Might Beyond Reason, Saddleback Lagac, Dragonscale Boon.

It's always nice to see new faces in our community :) Welcome!

Thanks again! Yeah, I definitely have a ton of fun playing this deck. I think a big part of it is playing stuff at instant speed, at the most annoying time for your opponent :D If you're gonna be fighting stuff (which is also super fun), I'll put in a good word for instants like Pit Fight Pounce or Mutant's Prey. Enjoy the brewing and good luck with the little one!
