Stony Strength Discussion

I'm attempting to build something similar, using some tricks such as Stony Strength and Rabid Bite .

Stony Strength can lure an opponent to attack, then slap a counter on a now blocker for a (hopefully) easy kill, and also it's a target trigger for Gargos to slay another threat on their turn.

Rabid Bite on a another large hydra will double up the removal also trigger Gargos too.

I see what you are aiming for, but would really want Pledge of Unity and Evolution Sage in a deck like this. Pelt Collector and Stony Strength also fit in well. You want to be adding +1/+1 counters from turn 2 or 3, so that when you start to proliferate, you grow the power of your creatures a quickly as possible. I don't know if you can do that with only white fliers.

hullos and kamarupa, I love the suggestions.

This is the first deck I ever built dating back to the 2015 prerelease. It's evolved a ton since then, clearly, with all the cards from later sets in it. That's kinda why the cards are so seemingly random. I haven't purchased cards for this deck yet. Everything I have was either pulled or traded for.

There's currently 69 cards because to be honest, I really struggle with deciding what to remove to meet 60 cards. I feel like they are all pretty good and serve a distinct purpose in the deck.

I definitely want those lands. I don't really like Fertile Thicket either. Probably remove the Selesnya Guildgate s because they're too slow too, huh? I like Oran-Rief, the Vastwood , Sunpetal Grove , and Temple of Plenty . I love the combo of Canopy Vista + Windswept Heath , but that seems like a lot of money for land, although I might justify it if I could see it's worth. What are the most important things I'm looking for when choosing land?

The Wanderer , Suspension Field , Wanderer's Strike , Hunt the Weak , and Prison Realm all help with protecting from creatures that I otherwise wouldn't be able to deal with, and Dragonscale Boon and Stony Strength surprise my opponent when they're attacking or try to mess with tapped creatures. What I really need are a couple cards that exile permanents rather than creatures, though. I have a couple of Generous Gift s in another deck that I could pull out and put into here.

I could see cutting The Wanderer , Retreat to Kazandu , New Horizons , and a lot of the kind of piddly creatures that are just there to get beefed or beef others.

If I cut The Wanderer , all instants, sorceries, and enchantments and dropped down to 24 creatures, I could have space for 8 cards if I kept 23 lands. What do you think the best would be the best 8 cards to have? Right now I'm thinking: 2x Generous Gift , Bow of Nylea , Nissa, Voice of Zendikar , 2x Blessed Alliance , Oblivion Ring , maybe Hardened Scales (how bad is it really if you play it first turn, considering all I would have to play other than that would be a hexdrinker, and it benefits massively from it if I can beef him before he gets protection from everything?) or Harvest Season ? (but that wouldn't that only be good with some landfall stuff or Vinelasher Kudzu , like you had said?)

Would that provide me with enough board removal to be consistently successful?

I have found the quickest way to get +1/+1 counters on your creatures is to play Biomancer's Familiar with Growth-Chamber Guardian and Incubation Druid . This means almost instant flipping of Hadana's Climb  Flip. Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter and Simic Ascendancy then help to create back-up win conditions, while Nissa, Who Shapes the World gives you all the mana you could want.

I would keep Pelt Collector and Roalesk, Apex Hybrid , but Siren Stormtamer is so much easier to cast and almost as effective as Frilled Mystic and the explore package (12 cards) may actually slow you down.

My recommendations for this deck would be:

-2 Nissa, Who Shakes the World , +2 Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter

-4 Frilled Mystic , +3 Siren Stormtamer , +1 Stony Strength

-4 Jadelight Ranger , +4 Biomancer's Familiar

-4 Merfolk Branchwalker , +4 Simic Ascendancy

-4 Wildgrowth Walker , +3 Evolution Sage , +1 Stony Strength

This combination should give you super-rapid growth of your creatures power with +1/+1 counters and an alternative win-con with the effect of Simic Ascendancy . I would look to have Sylvan Awakening in the side-board to be able to swing with an army of 2/2's after using Nissa's ultimate effect.

I suppose that we could design the sideboard so that we could swap out the adapt and the explore themes, but I would prefer some control options.

It certainly seems that mono-green Elf tribal decks are becoming more competitive at the moment and I really like your suggestion for a mono-green deck. My only worry is that Vanquisher's Banner is not playable before turn 4 or 5, which might be a bit late against some aggro decks.

One option that I have looked at for a mono-green 'elf' deck is to play Nissa, Who Shakes the World , proliferate to get her ultimate effect and place all your forests on the field, then play Sylvan Awakening to get a swarm of creatures. Might of the Masses then turns any one of your lands into a monster.

Another possibility is to give your elves +1/+1 tokens and play Evolution Sage to keep ramping up their power with each landfall. The problem is that cards like Song of Freyalise that provide across-the-board counters are really too slow against aggro decks and you don't get off the ground. Strong cards with this approach are, strangely, Pelt Collector , Enter the Unknown and Stony Strength (see how we keep coming back to the 1-drops as key cards).

There certainly seems to be potential in mono-green elf decks and we should keepbrewing and testing the various options.

Yes, Hardened Scales just begs for a place. I was looking at the trade-off between Stony Strength , which can kick-off your counters from turn 2 and Hardened Scales that just becomes more powerful with time, and initially chose Stony Strength .

Scales certainly outweighs Enter the Unknown in the side-board, but I still don't see it replacing anything other than Stony Strength . I will try it out.

I'm thinking that you could use maybe use the Incubation Druid + Stony Strength combo.

Another one drop that would help that's a one drop combat trick (meaning it could be used as removal in certain scenarios) is Stony Strength which is actually commonly used with Incubation Druid .
