Oviya - Construct Ramp

Most Oviya decks center around creating tokens or the fact they are artifacts... I wanted to build a deck that exploits her 5-mana ability.

2G for a 1/1 Servo isn't really efficient, but 4G for an X/X Construct can be vicious. But to be able to create those Constructs and get decent size out of them, we need two things - Mana and Creatures. Thankfully, Mana Creatures are a thing!

One of the things about this deck is that I wanted to keep the cost as low as I could, while making the deck as effective as possible. I am aware that there are cards that should definitely be included, but I omitted them due to cost considerations.

The cards in the "Maybeboard" are cards that were considered possibilities for inclusion, but were removed from the final deck for various reasons.

16 of our creatures are a 1 or 2-drop Mana Producers. 5 more creatures produce extra mana. Gyre Sage grows with every Construct you build, Karametra's Acolyte takes advantage of mono-green, and Elvish Archdruid takes advantage of other mana elves. With any of those four creatures out, they should be able to fuel Oviya's Construct creation by themselves. Joraga Treespeaker makes for a good mana sink that eventually boosts all elves.
  • Champion of Lambholt gets bigger with every creature that follows her onto the battlefield. Plus, she negates chump blockers.
  • Essence Warden for passive life gain (plus counts for Elvish Archdruid). Between all the creatures we're casting/creating, plus opponent's creatures, it's worth adding in.
  • Majestic Myriarch is great as a decoy/large smasher considering we're casting/creating creatures every turn.
  • Scion of the Wild is cheap and great to get out early game. Usually doesn't last long (for obvious reasons) so it serves as a great deterrent/creature kill spell fodder.
  • Loyal Guardian boosts all of our creatures on each of our combat phases. I would put him out mid-game when we've already got some big creatures established because the Guardian is very likely to be bombed/exiled.
  • Ulvenwald Tracker is excellent as reusuable creature removal at instant speed. Considering the size of the Constructs we'll be putting into play, the Tracker is very handy.

Quest for Renewal works early when you're tapping your mana producers (or attacking).

Cast Curse of Bounty on yourself. This allows you to attack at will because anyone silly enough to retaliate instantly untaps all of your creatures, allowing you to block and to create more Contructs on their turn.

Standard variety of Artifact/Enchantment removal, card retrieval, and life gain.

What I Look For To Start

With 60+ lands and mana producers, you've got pretty good odds of starting off with at least 2 mana and 1 or 2 mana creatures in your hand. Add in top 3 cards of your library and you should have enough to start the ball rolling.

  • If you have a mana creature and a land, play the creature.
  • If you have a mana creature and a land, play the land and cast Oviya.
  • If you have 1 land and 1 mana creature on the board, play your second land. If you have another mana creature, you should be able to play it and Oviya on this turn.
  • If you have 1 land and Oviya on the board, you should be able to play your 2-drop mana creature using your second land.
You should have 2 lands, 1 or 2 mana producers, and Oviya out on the battlefield. If you're lucky, you'll have picked up a 3rd land. If so, congrats, you can drop a 3/3 Construct and start the production party. But if you've got, say, Quest for Renewal, Illusionist's Bracers, or Elemental Bond in your hand, you may want to think about playing those first.
By now, you should definitely have everything you need to start rolling out Contructs. From here, you should be able to get a Construct out every turn. If you're not creating Constructs, you're casting mana creatures and dropping lands so that you can get to the point where are consistently dropping Constructs each and every turn.

Have fun and feel free to leave comments and ideas. Please disregard my sideboard and maybe stacks... I've been tossing ideas around moving cards around and haven't really stuck on anything for those yet. The mainboard is what I stick with.
