Update #6 (Stax-ish)

Lo_Pan, 7 years ago

The final update of this massive overhaul. Not to say it's the least important, but it's a one of the few deck categories that I just invented, and so differs furthest from the original deck design (though there were a few stax elements in the budget build).

Out: Ant Queen, Yavimaya Granger, Forest

In: Gaddock Teeg, Archon of Valor's Reach, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger

I don't love stax, but I've acquired a few cards like Teeg and Vorinclex that I've been looking to get into a deck. In a roundabout way, stax fits perfectly in the spirit of this deck which looks to put together an engine and outpace opponents. While I spent most of my energy looking for ways to speed this deck up, slowing our opponents works just as well. Yes, I'm getting too cute dropping a land, kudos to me for waiting until the final card to pull that nonsense.

Overall CMC change: (+8) Ouch

Overall category change: (stax-ish +3, land -1, utility -1, ramp-land -1)

Hope you've enjoyed these updates. The fun thing about Karametra is that you can keep the engine pieces the same (i.e., Aluren, Stonecloaker, etc.) and really go crazy elsewhere, I'm sure there's a radically different version of this deck that works just as well if not better.

Update #5 (Utility)

Lo_Pan, 7 years ago

Utility is a catchall category for this deck, so I'm going to move in some favorites that should help me better closeout games:

Out: Wolfbriar Elemental, Soul of New Phyrexia, Hydra Broodmaster

In: Genesis Wave, Selfless Spirit, Dragonlord Dromoka

GW is such a fun way to win a game, and this deck is really built towards that end; SS gives me a single activation of what Soul can do repeatably, but at about 1/6 the mana cost; the Dragonlord clears a path for that alpha strike, has evasion and lifelink, just a useful mix of...you guessed it: utility.

Overall CMC change: (-5) Nice

Deck Recreation

Shimtalia, 7 years ago

As I mentioned above, this is a recreation of the deck I had previously, Licia was not as fun as I hoped she would be...

As a recreation, there were numerous changes, mostly because I looked first at the cards that I still had and then built from there.

That said, here is my reaquire/aquire/tryout/upgrade list for the deck: Debtors' Knell, Erebos, God of the Dead, Infernal Reckoning, Kusari-Gama, Massacre Wurmfoil, Neko-Te, Path to Exile, Phyrexian Arena

Mnemomic Betrayal on the side lines

LabManiac_Cameron, 7 years ago

While it is an awesome plan, it has not been as consistent as I have wanted it to. Betrayal and Seeds of Innocence are now sidelined and in their place we have some efficient card draw. Dark Confidant and Runic Aramasaur slide into the vacant spots nicely.

WAR

Syllibus, 7 years ago

Updated with Oketra's Monument, Outpost Siege, Bedlam, Skullclamp, Warstorm Surge, Hardened Berserker, Hall of Triumph, Heriloom Blade, Vandalblast, Two-Headed Giant, and some more Snow Lands. I seem to be performing well with this deck all things considered, I'm 2 / 2 in my last 2 games played.

Another quick upgrade

YaBoyEvit, 7 years ago

Due to the increasing quality of the mana base thus far, I feel comfortable removing Chromatic Lantern and have added a copy of Prime Speaker Vannifar into the deck as a second copy of Birthing Pod.

Game 1 vs Hapatra and Lord Windgrace

SipAndPlayGames, 7 years ago

Okay, so this could have gone better than it did. I was a bit disappointed in how the first game went, but that was the matter of the draw and not of how the deck performed. My opening hand had both Twilight's Call and Zombie Apocalypse, which I foolishly kept and ended up being dead cards for quite some time. So, from my deck's perspective, I was slowly durdling around with zombies, though Ghoulraiser and Skinrender did quite a bit.

I never hit any of my Dig cards, and I never got to use any of the Drain cards that I played, due to my opponents wiping the board repeatedly. A number of the really good cards for this deck, like Paradox Haze and Havengul Lich were never drawn.

On top of the above, the Hapatra player (who really knows his deck well, and against whose deck I have played in the past) went off and dominated the board the whole game. I am definitely looking forward to giving The Scarab God another shot, though!

Sideboard?

SipAndPlayGames, 7 years ago

I was watching LegendVD on YouTube playing this deck, and I thought his land choices were interesting. He was playing four copies of Gemstone Cavern, which is a no-go for budget reasons, though Turn 1 Treasure Hunt seems cool (albeit does defeat us a bit, since it would mean discarding to hand size). However, Nephalia Academy looked like a useful addition, such that we could defend against control matchups. Perhaps it would be good for the sideboard, as going down islands and swamps could hurt us playing fast enough. Bojuka Bog in the mainboard could work for some graveyard hate, but, like Faerie Conclave, it is slightly high for the (very low) budget of this deck. Those should both be maybeboard upgrades, along with Halimar Depths for card selection.

In his sideboard, LegendVD was running Field of Ruin (for land destruction), Ghost Quarter (for land destruction), Kabira Crossroads (against burn), Khalni Garden (against aggro), and Radiant Fountain (against burn). The only problem I see is that Kabira Crossroads and Khalni Garden both put us off our Dimir colors, which could slow us down, and I would rather be making 2/2 Zombie tokens, faster, than 0/2 chump blockers. Ghost Quarter could be maybeboard, along with Field of Ruin, due to the price (though I might have a few copies of Field from opening Ixalan packs. Radiant Fountain would be solid sideboard, though, since the current sideboard of counter magic is...not useful for this deck. In fact, anything that is not a land is not ideal for the deck.

In summary, I think Bojuka Bog, Faerie Conclave, and Halimar Depths are definite maybeboard considerations for the mainboard. (Also, Spawning Pool has come to my attention as a potential mainboard option.) Nephalia Academy, Field of Ruin, Ghost Quarter, and Radiant Fountain are definite maybeboard considerations for the sideboard. I might still keep Damping Sphere in the sideboard, even though I have never actually used it.

On a completely different sideboard approach, MTG Forge has this video, which I need to watch and analyze: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iSPFK98g8A

Also, I should consider this 1 Zombie Infestation variant: https://www.reddit.com/r/spikes/comments/9lowes/other_the_zombie_hunt_analysis_you_never_knew_you/ Someone in that thread actually recommends Worm Harvest which is an interesting approach for sideboard.
